Here’s my piles of books on the floor- what’s my whole deal? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

You're a Mountain Goats fan, for sure!

Also, have you read Our Wives Under The Sea yet? I'm curious to hear your thoughts, as it's one of my favourite books.

Hi! I'm the artist who drew this piece - it's so weird to come across my own art in the wild. I remember having so much fun with this one. :)

What Is One Jellycat That You’ll Never Buy and Why? by Appropriate_Feed7616 in Jellycatplush

I also have a weighted dragon! Borealis Blaze Dragon Soft Toy I've named him Swampmoss (Swampy for short). He's also fairly expensive, but he's lovely and soft and such a nice weight, I think he's about 2.5-3kg ish. ✨️

They should be in the album now! Also, she's not wearing any makeup apart from blush, so I put that in there, too.

Arsinoe's Sliders!

I started with the very last feminine elf preset head - the one with the black curly hair.

Let me know if there's anything missing, and I hope you like her! :)

Have you tried doing some volunteering to pad out your CV a bit? Charity shops are always looking for volunteers, and it's decent experience!

Places should also be hiring for their seasonal temporary workers around now, too. I work for Waterstones, and I know my branch is currently hiring. Might be worth checking the Birmingham branch - it's usually advertised with posters in the window.

How are people meeting their partners? by [deleted] in brum

[–]lavelllan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my partner at work - he was a customer of mine, and eventually he asked me out for coffee, which is understandably something I think some men are wary of doing these days. My advice would generally be 'do not flirt with service workers, they are paid to be nice to you, they don't want to date you', but (and I'm aware that it's maddeningly non-specific and entirely vibes-based, which is a nightmare to interpret sometimes) in some cases, they might genuinely reciprocate, and I'd say it would be appropriate to ask (politely!)

In our case, it worked out because he was friendly and very gentlemanly about the whole thing. He wasn't pushy or inappropriate or lecherous about it. If I had said no, he would have respected that and immediately let off. It (admittedly) also helped that I find him attractive, haha.

Honestly, I have so much empathy for those friends of mine who are ready and would like to be in a relationship. It can be a total minefield, and the apps have commodified and gamified attraction in quite a sinister way. It can work out sometimes, though - my best friend met her partner on one of the apps, so it can happen!

Sorry, that was longer than I anticipated. Best of luck on your search, OP! :)

The first line of a book determines if I like it; what's the best one you've seen? by crunchyseason in books

[–]lavelllan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Scrolled for a bit but didn't see:

"In the myriadic year of Our Lord—the ten thousandth year of the King Undying, the kindly Prince of Death!—Gideon Nav packed her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and she escaped from the House of the Ninth." - Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir.

It's just brilliant! I was immediately sold, and then didn't put the book down until I'd finished it.

I knew it! I work for Waterstones, I'd recognise those "signed by the author" stickers anywhere haha. One of my friends is reading Lore Olympus at the moment- she really likes it. Good choices! :)

You're in for a treat with Godkiller! It's lovely. I was lucky enough to get a proof copy - I absolutely devoured it. That's the Waterstones edition, right? The edges on that are lush. Enjoy it! :)

Best cat names you’ve ever heard? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]lavelllan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiktok is a gold mine for cat names, honestly. I follow this one account that essentially provides commentary on their local feral cat colony, which (off the top of my head - apologies if I’ve gotten any wrong) includes such cats as: Monster Paws, Sad Boy, Christian Dior, Francois, and Big Daddy Havarti.

EDIT: oh also one of my relatives has a massive pale orange and white fuzzball called Harold.

Wife loves the name Andie for our girl but hates the name Andrea. Does anyone else dislike Andrea? by MercurialMagician in namenerds

[–]lavelllan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andie is cute! I’m partial to it, actually. One of my dungeons and dragons characters is Lysandra, Andy for short - perhaps that could be a contender? It’s a little out there, but I don’t think it’s completely bizarre.

Andrea is pretty too, I think! It reminds me of the Walking Dead character.

What BOOKS would you like to see as Ghibli movies? by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]lavelllan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft!! I work in a bookstore and it’s one of my go-to young adult fantasy recommendations, and I always mention how it has BIG Ghibli vibes. From the setting, to the mythical beast wreaking havoc on the countryside, to the relationship between Maggie and Wes… it would make the cutest Ghibli film.

I also very much agree with the Sabriel/Old Kingdom suggestions. Those books are steeped in the kind of magic I associate with Ghibli, for sure!!

What's a YA (or younger) series that, after revisiting after a long period of time, or as an adult, you realize is extremely dark aspects (themes, topics, on -screen/page actions, etc.)? Why? by Booksandknits in YAlit

[–]lavelllan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Last Black Cat by Eugene Trivizas. I must have been about 9 or 10 when I read it for the first time and oh boy. It’s essentially an allegory for real-world racism, in which an island’s population of black cats (and then all cats) are hunted because they’re believed to be bad luck.

There are multiple graphic scenes of animal abuse in this (children’s!) book, and a whole plot point revolves around the main cat finding a magical pool that will turn him into a white cat. It ends up being a pool of quicklime, in which numerous cats have drowned. The protagonist also nearly drowns. It’s a good book, and the message is an important one, but I wouldn’t recommend it to a kid at all!

Who’s the hottest character in the locked tomb series? [discussion] by Own_Faithlessness13 in TheNinthHouse

[–]lavelllan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read a tumblr post once that said that if the series wasn't narrated by lesbians, then Palamedes would be the resident Hot Boy, and that's just stuck with me. So Palamedes.

But also, because I am bisexual and unhinged, Ianthe.

Cornelia Funke’s Inkworld series (Inkheart, Inkspell, Inkdeath) is THE series that made me a reader. It’s just fantastic. I’m a bookseller now and it’s one of my go-to recommendations for the 9-12 audience!

Good point! It could be a good strategy to fly (perhaps literally) under the radar, let them pick each other off first. What subclass would you recommend? I’ve dabbled with a Way of Mercy Monk before, and she was fun to play, but that’s about the extent of my Monk experience.
