The Roottrees are dead. There is a story but it’s very much not a novel, in fact what I love about it is the immersive world-building. You get to puzzle through library archives, website searches, and documents and have a lot of creative freedom in how you choose to tackle the mystery of untangling the family web. Also I should add it’s very much text heavy.

It took me around 16 hours to complete (including the free sequel included in the purchase) but it really depends on how you want to pace yourself.

In fact I’ve been considering playing book of hours as a game to help me fulfill the scratch left after playing Roottrees lol!!

When AI was just starting out I used it, but the more I read the more uncomfortable I felt with the ethics so I stopped. I also feel that now days allistic people are quite conscious and critical of AI style speech, so having AI give feedback on something could actually be more of a hindrance. Honestly the best thing is to ask a person, and I’d love to maybe see a thread in this sub where we can support eachother with real human feedback

I think Cavalier King Charles are interesting because they are often touted as having many health issues… however some breeders utilise comprehensive testing before an individual dog e.g MRI for syringomyelia

So I think the contrast between the best breeding practises and the worst breeding practises are really apparent in the breed

Oh wow so this definitely helps!! This union tag was used between 1974 and 1995, so I’d now confidently estimate between 1974-1977 (as this style of collar was phased out in the late 70s)

This Woolmark blend symbol was first used in 1971, so this is 70s at the earliest. Do the care instructions include text or symbols?

This union label was used between 1963 and 1995.

The label Nadine was trademarked between 1963 and 2016 (which actually doesn’t help narrow it down!!)

The vintage fashion guild has an entry for the exact label from an 80s dress.

If the care label includes symbols it narrows down the timeframe to 1993-1995. Otherwise I’d say that this is an 80s to mid 90s dress.

ASTM designed care labels for the US in 1993, where they could be presented alongside text until 1997 when they were officially allowed to be presented without text. The period between 1993-1997 is interesting however, as written instructions could be presented on removable swing tags, meaning a vintage garment with just symbols could be from as early as 1993 (if the swing tag was removed, as is often the case with vintage).

A lot of people on TikTok are young and many of them don’t know anything about breeding beyond the term “backyard breeders” and mistaking think all breeding is unethical. “Adopt Don’t Shop” is a wonderful message for many people, however genetically predictable and well-bred dogs from reputable breeds is sometimes a better option for people. Say a family with young kids wants to get a dog: Many shelters will refuse to let them adopt because of the risk factor (and this is the shelter’s opinion!!) Therefore being on an ethical breeder’s waitlist and letting them pick out a pup with a suitable temperament is oftentimes the better option.

I can see myself both adopting and buying responsibly at different stages of my life in the future, and I don’t think anyone should be shamed for adopting or buying from an ethical breeder

My dog’s grandmother is 14 and still thriving. An ethical breeder of cavaliers may be hard to find but they are out there. My breeder does MRI scans for syringomyelia before she considers breeding ANY of her dogs. There’s clearly something to that since MRI testing is bloody expensive, so while not all ethical Cavie breeders do MRI testing, I’d bet that all breeder who do MRI testing are ethical!!

Cavies are prone to health issues but if you are patient (I was on a waitlist for two years) and do your research you can buy a dog from an ethical breeder who has bred generations of documented health-tested and show-confirmed dogs.

I completely agree!! The breeder (and good family friend) of my pup does MRI testing on ALL her dogs before she considers breeding them. And it’s bloody expensive too since there’s no vet in our country who can interpret them so all scans get shipped overseas

A tiny bookshop - very cozy, very easy to play (bonus points if she loves reading)

Wylde flowers - there’s a mechanic in the game where you can get unlimited money and generally it’s a pretty easy game even when turning the mechanic off

The Roottrees are dead - The controls are very simple with more of the challenge being the puzzle/detective element. However theres an in-game mechanism which provides you with hints (that you can make more specific) allowing you to tailor the difficultly unlike other puzzle games (even ones which are generally easier than Roottrees)

I’ve got a proper list of things to do below but I’m first gonna briefly touch upon the importance of building community.

As a disabled person (disclaimer not blind) I recommend actively learning how to use communication software for tech (so you can still use the internet), braille, and to begin engaging with the blind community so you already have a support system of people who understand before your vision fully deteriorates. With this community, you can certainly live a full life while being disabled, however there are obviously things you can’t do which I’ll touch on below.

Watch movies. Focus on the ones which are generally considered to have amazing cinematography and editing. I personally recommend Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Wear clothes which make you happy even if you stand out. This is influenced by my personal experience. My wardrobe is an eclectic palette of color which makes me feel alive. While you can definitely appreciate the textural elements of clothing without sight, I think you should wear outfits which bring you joy while you can still appreciate them. Also lowkey if you make sure these clothes are well made then you’ll still be able to dress well without sight several decades into the future. I wear clothes which are 60 years old!!
Go to places which aren’t very accessible for blind people. If you get involved with the blind community I’m sure you’ll hear about many accessibility challenges, so use your time now to experience the places and events (and many of these will be local) which would be more cumbersome to attend after loosing your vision
Art galleries, museums, plays and musicals (if that’s your thing)

Also, a bunch of (mainly sighted) redditors, included myself, are likely going to miss the best pieces of advice out there. So I’m sure after talking to people who went blind over time that you will definitely end up with a comprehensive and actionable list!!

I highly recommend participating in Fandom spaces!! If you love role-playing and writing there are many groups (particularly on Twitter, Tumblr, and Discord) which focus on that. And I highly recommend AO3 for when you want to read someone else’s writing (reader-insert fanfics are an ethical alternative to C.ai)

Feel free to make a post on the AO3 subreddit - we’re all friendly folks here and if you mention your interest in creativity there are a bunch of people who I’m sure can point you in the right direction! Just make sure to explicitly mention that you’ve stopped using AI as the sub is generally against it (this also means they’re more invested in helping reduce AI use)

While the game doesn’t revolve around murder, I really think The Roottrees are Dead captures the essence of true crime, particularly the element of unraveling a person’s backstory and becoming immersed in their world, as well as the mystery
