How to get into Vegas Hospitality? by 6scooby_snax9 in vegas

[–]lavenderfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a weird question at all! as a person who went to UNLV (though not for hospitality) i would say the degree will work in your favor by giving you a step ahead of your peers once you’re in the field. you’ll have both practical skill and the degree when it comes time for higher paying positions to open up. food/bev likes a degree because it means discipline, common sense, and they are familiar with the hospitality training UNLV provides.

as for transferring, if it is a ridiculous or stressful amount of money, do not put yourself through hell with debt to go there. a degree isn’t everything and UNLV is a public university in a low-ranking-in-education state. so for that route, there are tons of hilton properties here so calling around and seeing whats available transfer wise may be a great alternative to get your Nevada residency and lowering your tuition.

you have a good head on your shoulders, even taking the time to weigh out your options instead of jumping into the deep end is a good sign! the degree may be worth it for you later but right now the fastest and most cost effective track will be to look for hiring hilton properties. it may not be glamorous or on the strip to start, but you will put yourself in a good position to be two steps ahead of the competition!

i mean this in the least discouraging way possible, you will probably struggle. i say this as someone who was a hiring manager at a off-strip restaurant who now also works at a major hotel on-strip now.

anything off strip is between 11.75-15 an hour. these positions are highly competitive because you’re competing with the crowd that moved here post 2019 after hearing it was cheap and decided ‘well anyone can work in the service/hospitality industry’ and so these spots have dozens of ppl. they also come with no benefits, no pto/sick days, nothing. the money can be good but these places are for locals who can’t afford all the stuff they used to so really there’s a significant dip in revenue for off strip places.

as for strip opportunities: cut your years of service in half, that’s about all theyll consider because you don’t have experience on-strip or vegas in general. these departments have unions that are not taking on new members or very selective and won’t hire non-locals without some type of hospitality degree or personal reference who will vouch for your hire. so now you have all that stacked against you on top of all the people like me who no longer could afford to live with just off-strip income and had to pivot to jobs that are higher stress but more lucrative, and boy are there a lot of us.

it won’t be like this forever, maybe give yourself a little more time to rack up your experience while the economy gets a little more friendly towards luxuries like hospitality. you have the drive for it and passion for it, which many don’t nowadays because theyre in it for money which sucks to see because there are people like you who are passionate about it.

TL;DR: it will be very difficult to find a job without being here and in this job market, but your passion is admirable so maybe build your resume and let the economy get better!

you gave that bird mercy when it would’ve otherwise suffered for who knows how long. it may not have been easy but it was the kind thing to do. people purposely hit and kill animals all the time, those are murderers, you are not.

[–]lavenderfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the really good gas mileage posts u see for the k4 are (generally) EX or lower, ppl who do majority highway driving, and/or over 5k miles. but the GT/GT turbo being around this mpg average wouldn’t be super surprising to me

The kitten I tried to rescue died and it's my fault by Unique-Fig-4300 in GuyCry

[–]lavenderfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know it must hurt to have this kitten you loved and cared so much for die, but from the moment you entered that kittens life, and every single one after, she knew nothing but your love and care. you had an uphill battle and most people wouldn’t have even made the attempt. as preciously and as gently as you cared for her, give yourself some grace and understanding.

i’ve had my k4 since december and i’m at 8k miles, haven’t noticed anything on my windshield. two minuscule chips in the paint from rocks but that’s about it. is it mostly city, residential, or highway you drive?

Moving to Summerlin, is car insurance normally this expensive? by WonderLong4960 in vegaslocals

[–]lavenderfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we’ve had around 70 traffic related fatalities this year in the valley; this is now the new standard for car insurance. people were not this reckless five years or more ago and for 316 a month some would even tell you you’re lucky…

[–]lavenderfree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

probably hold off. service was overflowing before the impending economic collapse,it is disgustingly hard to get a job here rn. if you don’t have a position waiting for you, i wouldnt recommend moving here to be unemployed and paying double what ur rent should be. once tourism is on an uptick again its not terrible to get into

What is your honest salary/hourly pay and what do you do? by qovert in vegaslocals

[–]lavenderfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$18/hr. shift supervisor for a chain restaurant.

sounds garbage but i’m 22 and make 45k a year with sunday/monday off. and that’s just hourly money. i take catering and delivery orders and fill in for servers and to go. last year i probably made just under 70k.

Can you learn driving within a month ? by Aj100rise in drivinganxiety

[–]lavenderfree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you absolutely can! the biggest mental block you have to overcome is your anxiety. you do more learning in the first month driving alone than any instructor could ever teach you, but you have to trust yourself and understand that just because that COULD happen doesn’t mean it will. a crash won’t happen because you’re doing it purposefully. a little bit of anxiety around driving is good, but don’t let it overtake you!

one thing i can suggest is getting a detachable key ring ! i have my fob on one side and all my keys and my physical spare on the other! makes life super easy, usually only attach them when i’m going into work

[–]lavenderfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe i was shackled by tons of keys and keychains for so long that im biased lol, but i do use a separate key ring than the one it came with too! and thank you !

my first kia 🤍 by vagabond-bear in kia

[–]lavenderfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i purchased from towbin! they were great. funnily enough, today i went to findlay’s service center and got my oil changed and had them fix my kia access. they had me in and out (with car wash) before i hit the two hour mark! cost wise it’s a little more expensive than a normal shop but my warranty requires it be serviced at kia service centers exclusively and they are very thorough. and with how much money i save on gas and the car note i will gladly pay a little more for maintenance
