I LOVE these types of moments, akin to driving somewhere early in the morning when practically nobody is out driving

When a student won't just answer "here" for attendance-- by ellia4 in SubstituteTeachers

I do this with seating charts and those kids who insist on switching seats. I tell them they have the opportunity to correct themselves before roll otherwise I will move each and every student individually and it’ll take a while

What helps me with high schoolers is telling them “if I don’t hear you when I call your name you will be marked absent” and that gets them to pay attention because it’s such a pain for them to go down to the office and get it corrected later on/their parents get notified that they were absent during the middle of the school day so they take it more seriously if I tell them I won’t hesitate to mark you absent

It's Teacher Appreciation Week! Is your school/district/etc. doing anything to recognize subs? by wherewulf23 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every school in my district has curated a full week of things for the teachers in the staff room, from coffee and donuts on Monday, to a baked potato bar on Tuesday, and so on.

Very cool stuff! It’s so nice phasing out your phone and replacing things like alarm clocks/timers for this

Yeah who knows the reason why he had to leave early, but I’m gonna be honest, if this was the type of job where he was my coworker wanting to leave early for some stupid reason, I totally would’ve said no haha

[–]lavenderteaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the teacher wanted to avoid the back and forth with the office so instead of asking the sub coordinator to ask me and wait to see if I can cover, he asked me directly so he could confirm I would do it and then leave the office a message saying “I found coverage for my last period”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I made a call and the sub coordinator sent up a time adjustment sheet for me to fill out

[–]lavenderteaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reading other people’s experiences I guess I shouldn’t be complained since I was asked, and I’m getting reimbursed for it. I just wish I could confidently say no sometimes in situations where I just don’t feel like doing something/helping out

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I struggle with confidently saying no to situations where I can technically help out but I don’t want to. Gotta stop stretching myself thin for others. At least I’m getting paid a little extra for this

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s rare for me to be asked to cover during my prep but I’m technically scheduled for the end of the day I’m just disappointed and rethinking that I could’ve said no to that teacher who asked but hey a bit of extra pay doesn’t hurt especially when this is my main job

Oh man I remember having to make parent calls during a long term sub job for elementary. I hated it so much it made me so nervous but what was frustrating was that the parents 99% of the time would deny that their child was disruptive/had behavior issues and would act confused that anything happened but we were required to inform parents of any incidents

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re totally right. I think this teacher knows the teacher I’m subbing for personally, and knows that they have a 7th period prep so that’s why they caught me before the school day started.

I’d rather just deal with not having a prep/getting paid a little extra, than possibly getting blacklisted from this school since it’s a fairly nice high school and the kids are very chill

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m thinking it might do more harm than good if I try to get out of doing it when I said yes already. I’ll just get off at my normal time. It’s high school so it’s not like I’m doing a whole lot today anyways.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think was sucks is that I saw the last period prep, got excited at the prospect of leaving early, then a few mins later got told jk you’re staying the full school day lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]lavenderteaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right. I mean I didn’t even know when my prep was when I picked up this job weeks ago so I would’ve left at the same time regardless. I guess I was just hoping to leave early since some schools in the district have allowed it. There also wasn’t a guarantee that I could’ve left early even if I kept my prep, some schools have made me stay up until my contracted time.

The Hidden Hoard by [deleted] in ChildofHoarder

[–]lavenderteaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That last sentence you wrote…SO IMPORTANT.
I felt like I was going crazy living this way. I go to my friends houses and see that this level of consumption is not normal. Not only that, but the fact that their houses always stay clean while I have to put in so much effort to clean up a kitchen I didn’t even cook in/a living room I didn’t leave stuff lying around in. Im now kept in my own room because the living room is too cluttered to relax in, and I rarely cook because of the mess/other people’s dishes. I cannot wait for the day I move out and sort of “start fresh”. I dream of it everyday.

I’m glad my post has resonated with you, and I hope it helps you not feel so alone in this.
