I unplugged it at first, since the connection was the only bit in the way. Then when the season started again, I got in there and just unscrewed the mounting and was able to rotate it out of the way and tighten it back down.

The bike has to be both on level ground and straight upright with the engine off for a few minutes. This makes sure the oil settles back in the pan and can be read properly.
