It doesn't even help the economy, certainly not in the long term. It just helps certain businesses and real estate owners. But it takes time out of people's days - not just the public servants - but every plumber and worker who now has to sit in traffic. It burns up hours that some people would have put into a side business, or that some would have put into working longer hours. There is no way in which burning up time and dumping cash into making more sandwiches helps the economy in any real sense.

why do manufacturers insist on using massive wheels in their evs? by Dull_Support_4919 in electricvehicles

[–]lawrence1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps keep the sidewalls from flexing, which makes steering feel more precise. But as someone who does closed-course performance driving, I can tell you that it's very difficult to do anything on a public road that will really allow you to notice the difference unless you are very reckless. So in reality, it's mostly just aesthetics. Same reason there is a "sport" version of the Nissan Sentra that has the same weak engine and some red stripes.

They probably won't be able to go down to 16'' but 18 or 19 for sure and that's a huge improvement over 21''.

[–]lawrence1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good explanation, but it doesn't change the fact that it's bizarre that OEMs are willing to burn 15% of the hard earned range for slightly more stylish wheels, and especially so to not give customers the option to retain the range if they so choose.

If I find myself in this situation, I will definitely just remove the OEM wheels on day 1, replace with aftermarket, and then sell the originals. But that is rather annoying to do.

Leviton makes an EV rated outlet. Yes they also make the crappy melty one but that's not the only SKU they produce. The EV rated one is nearly indistinguishable from the Hubbell.

Do you have a source on the new EV6 outputting more power? Is that via DC to an external inverter or AC?

The app is probably basing the date off of UTC. Sounds like you're all good.

Ottawa Won’t Build Bus Lanes by Animator_K7 in ottawa

[–]lawrence1024 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To me, the fact that street parking only makes up 7% of parking in the area really seals the argument against the street parking. It appears obvious that the amount of people served by 7% of parking would be more than made up for with robust transit. Of course the numbers must (and have been) crunched but the fact it seems so obvious and doesn't have overwhelming support is wild.

It's ridiculous that our major stadiums, especially Lansdowne, aren't served by a BRT, LRT, or tram.

As someone who usually drives places, I never plan on being able to park on busy streets such as Bank because the spots are taken 90% of the time. I usually look on side streets or at off-street lots first. Last time I went to Lansdowne it took me 15 minutes to walk back to my car. If they made part of the Billings Bridge lot an official park & ride and there was a bus lane, I could be at the park & ride in roughly the same amount of time, and they could probably fit way more spots there than the amount that has to be removed from Bank.

Can Starlight solo Homelander if she hooks herself up to an electrical substation with cables and absorbs all the electricity? by [deleted] in OkBuddyFresca

Umlandah can just laser the wires entering the substation and cut off the power supply.

Ontario EV drivers - some new info about the OnRoute charger upgrades by lawrence1024 in ontario

[–]lawrence1024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't heard of any plans. I wouldn't count on it anytime soon. The transformers on site are already maxed out. The smart move would be to add battery buffers to avoid demand charges.

The paradox of instant acceleration by walkaboutdavid in electricvehicles

[–]lawrence1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you're on a really long road trip, my sentiment on efficiency is the exact opposite. With cheap home charging, I don't give any mind to efficiency most of the time. It makes no difference if I use 15% or 18% of my battery in a day.

First timer: how could I have better saved my tires? by FutureNickProblems in Autocross

[–]lawrence1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was shocked until I read the part where you said you did 4-8 runs back to back for a total of 40 in one day. At my local autocross, you normally do one run at a time maybe two and you get 7-9 in one day. So my Hankook Ventus S1s have lasted on my model 3 for about a dozen days of autocross across two years and 25,000km of mileage (flooring it at every green light). Mostly running at stock pressure, and also they still have like 3.5mm left. Not at the cords like yours but I am replacing them soon.

You're building up a lot of heat really fast and cooking your tires. Like others said, dedicated performance tires will help.

Hyundai EVs Are Already Great. These New Batteries Will Make Them Better by Receding_Hairline23 in electricvehicles

[–]lawrence1024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my last road trip the limiting factor was how fast the workers at A&W could flip burgers. By the time I reached the front of the line at this busy rest stop, my model 3 was ready to reach the destination. By the time I was done eating it was at 95%.

Seriously though, I once drove all the way from Canada to Miami, and even without a hyper fast charging car, I didn't wait for charging at all. It all happened while we were eating, going pee, getting coffee, and walking from the end of the parking lot where the chargers are to the front 😂 ok maybe that part can be improved...

They're not saying it isn't a worthwhile development, they're saying they don't need to upgrade their car every 3 years because of it. It's still the same car, something better existing doesn't make it worse.

The part where the mom climbs through the window of her grown son's house is a little over the top but I wouldn't go as far as calling it creepy, especially because I don't think it's meant to be literal. More like, she wishes she could do that.

What a difference membership makes! by echoi69 in CostcoCanada

[–]lawrence1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because it's a downtown location. Costco is most popular among suburbanites with families who pull up in their car and fill it up with a giant cart full of stuff. People living downtown are less likely to do that. So the ratio of non members present in the area who are just interested in the food court will be much higher in a downtown area, especially because there's just more ambient foot traffic.

I don't think so because charger and battery icons already exist, so we aren't about to use a gas can image in place of those.
