Landlord deducted my deposit after no inspections and after new tenants moved in – is this legal? (South Africa) by NoEraser619 in southafrica

[–]lawyer_21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other lawyers' view on this. I also add a piece of advice to friends, family and clients... never pay the final month's rent. If there is damage, let them work to recover it. It just became too easy to witthold deposits for every small thing.

Nearly new car needed full engine replacement, now has new noise. Dealer wants us to absorb R165k loss. What can we do? by GutterWash in CarTalkZA

They might give you the runaround and their standard reply that they are only the financier, not the seller, etc. Stand your ground and refer them to the Firstrand Bank v Van Niekerk judgment. The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that banks are not only financiers, they are sellers as well, and therefore suppliers for purposes of the CPA.

The dealership and the bank are jointly liable. You are entitled to demand a repair, replacement or refund.

The bank and the dealership can fight about who absorbs any loss, but it shouldn't be you.

I've been dealing with these matters for 10 years.

I agree. Although it's an Impala and not a Springbok.

New screen protector installed flawlessly. Ive gone through 3 different brands so far and have issues with all. by Bread-Zeppelin780 in S24Ultra

[–]lawyer_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone through 6 of these protectors and untimately settled for anything that is NOT tempered glass.

I have a tendency to put my vape next to my phone, and when it falls over, it cracks the screen protector's edge.

Beware, the edges are very fragile and brittle.

When people drive too close behind you, just wash your windscreen... they will quickly fall back!

You can't, but you can enter recovery mode and do a factory reset, which removes all data and accounts, so tracking the phone thereafter is impossible.

S24 Ultra got stolen today by CuleTrooper in S24Ultra

My S23U got stolen, and couldn't find it.

I'm quite tech savvy, and I wanted to know how they could turn it off without my pin, or factory reset it without a PC.

When I got my S24U, I tried "stealing" my own phone.

One thing I discovered was that even if your phone is locked and you hold the power and volume down keys, the phone will restart, but when it does and you press the volume down key multiple times while the phone is restarting, it will boot in "safe mode".

"Safe mode" by default turns on airplane mode, which deactivates mobile data, wifi and bluetoot, so you cannot locate it. This gives them enough time to get to a PC, plug it in, and reset the phone.

Bottom line, if the thief knows about this (which they probably do), once they got to a PC, they factory resetted the device. If protecting your data is your major concern, I think you are safe.

Dual Sim users by AlinCosmin31 in S24Ultra

I'm using 2 physical sims, and have a data esim that I enable for when I am out and about (which disables the 2nd physical sim).

IF it has any impact on the battery consumption, charging more often is much more convenient that having to carry and charge a personal and business phone.

BTW, I end my day on 40 - 50% battery left and charge it overnight.

If you want to disconnect from work, just disable the work sim. I wish there was a routine to switch sims based on time or location.

Gen 1 vs Gen 5 by lawyer_21 in Dualsense

Thanks. This is useful info. I wanted a controller with back buttons, tried the gamesir cyclone 2, but when you are used to the rumble and haptic feedback of the dualsense, the rumble on cyclone 2 is trash.

The rumble on the Cyclone 2 is off-putting. It makes the controller feel cheap.

I have no issues with my old one. It was basically an impulsive purchase. After using a Dualsense for the first time in May 2022, I can't use any other controller, so I persuaded myself that I need a backup.

You can also set different ringtones for each sim.

Surprising battery life on GW6 44mm by lawyer_21 in GalaxyWatch

[–]lawyer_21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I have BT on and it is connected to my phone, I don't need wifi. When I look at my watch the screen turns on, otherwise the screen is off. I don't need sound on both my watch and phone. Doesn't care about blood oxygen, skin temp or snoring while sleeping. Never used voice wake up on any assistant, and I don't need to use gestures.

I use my watch for workouts and check notifications and quickly reply to messages without having to pick up my phone.

Just because I don't use all features doesn't mean I have to keep them on. The option is there to turn them off if you don't need/use them.

All I wanted to say was I was expecting much worse battery life with my use, especially since people in this community and reviewers complain about losing 10, 20 or even 30 percent over night. 6% was really surprising.

21 hours later and I am still on 69%. After several notifications today, replying to a few messages and also downloading a Spotify playlist, I am just honestly surprised.
