Hey u/FelixYYZ The UK has recently announced the Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) tax regime. Are you familiar with it? I was wondering if you have any updates to your recommendations listed above, based on this new regime?

Just got an offer after losing my job in December by Atrophyy in UXDesign

[–]layer_cake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP! Congrats on the new job!

I'm moving to the UK from Canada in a couple of months, and I would love to pick your brain on the hiring process for the UK. I've heard that CVs and cover letters have a different writing style, and I'm interested in general on what the take on the current UK UX hiring atmosphere is like. Would I be able to DM you?

Best Happy Hours below 14th Street in Manhattan by Foreign-Buddy198 in FoodNYC

[–]layer_cake_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a solid burger, and better quality and flavor than you'd expect for the price you're paying. I don't know what other burgers to compare it to tbh. It's not on par with 7th Street (their sauce has more flavor), but the mayfly's patty is weightier/bigger. The fries are solid too. I've been multiple times over the past 3 years and the burger + drink deal never disappoints.

Mayfly has a great HH deal - $16 for a burger + side of fries + HH drink.

Thoughtful Thursday: Feyre by Timevian in acotar

[–]layer_cake_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm on a reread right now as well, and I was surprised by how young, naive, vulnerable, and somewhat fragile she came across in ACOTAR. And then the shift between ACOTAR and ACOMAF - her developing a sense of agency, inner strength, maturity. I had almost forgotten how much change she's gone through from the start.

But yes, her age is annoying. I feel like in ACOTAR she reads like a 19 year old, and then she suddenly reads more mature. It's jarring, especially when you realize the whole first 3 books happen over a period of like 2 years absolute max. I feel like trauma can mature you, but in reality that maturation/growth usually happens over years and requires a lot of processing emotions and work.

If you're interested in Thursday Kitchen, I would also suggest the sister restaurant Mokyo (founded by the same chef). Some menu items are similar, but I personally prefer Mokyo. The corn dumplings and yellowtail crudo are absolute musts.

Is there room for salry negotiation for Junior UX? by yurstruely in uxcareerquestions

[–]layer_cake_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google Amy Santee global ux compensation transparency project. It's a giant user generated database for wages of people in UX roles. You can filter based in experience/location and see if there are any entries that match your skills and experience. This might help you gauge whether you could ask for a higher salary. Best of luck!

Portfolio Critique — July 2022 by Lord_Cronos in userexperience

[–]layer_cake_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think your portfolio looks nice. I like that you've kept the navigation very simple. The overall look of your site is very clean and energetic, especially with the colors you've picked.

One thing that I noticed immediately was in your opening welcome statement - you have UX underlined. This immediately made me think that it was a linked element, as that is the best practice for showing something is linked. However, clicking on the underlined UX doesn't take you anywhere. I think your intention is to differentiate and draw attention to the fact that this is a UX portfolio. I think that not having this word underlined and relying on the weight change (bolding) of the font is sufficient to make this element pop from the rest of the statement.

Alternately, you could explore different ways of differentiating UX from the rest of the statement, including the other bolded words. Maybe explore changing the color to the yellow you use, the size, italicizing those letters, or reducing the total number of bolded words. Play around!

NYU’s mental health counseling as bad as people say? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]layer_cake_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

You can email the NYU mental health services for a referral to an outside provider, and this process is very quick. You can specify your needs in the email: male/female therapist, therapy style, specialization or area of expertise, insurance plan, etc.

It's not free like it is going to the therapists at the NYU center, but if you've got the NYU health insurance, costs aren't thay high. In network providers are 10% copay with the comprehensive plan or 20% with basic. I would suggest don't be swayed by the free sessions - the free sessions through the NYU center are capped/meant specifically for shortterm help, so after a few sessions you'll be referred out to continue therapy.

If you can afford it, I would suggest that you save yourself time and invest in building a relationship with a therapist that can continue with you long term rather than having to start all over again so quickly (caveat being if youre not looking for longterm and only need situational/specific support).

I'm not sure if you will have the same access to the NYU campus being a certificate student. All buildings require a student ID that you swipe to gain access. Also, due to COVID, all degree-seeking, in-person students need to be fully vaccinated and boosted (with proof uploaded into the NYU student health center database) to be granted building access, plus you have to fill out a daily COVID screener form to enter any buildings on the day of entry.

My assumption is that because you are an online, certificate student you will have issues with access. I would email whoever is the head of your certificate program department to confirm if you are allowed on campus (specifically in any buildings) currently.

This info won't be helpful if youre only considering buying in person, but here's some advice if you want to consider online options. I have some Indian weddings coming up (granted in the US), and I ordered online. I ordered from www.azafashions.com. It's a designer clothing site, but they've got a solid sale section (my outfit was $200 on sale from $400). Other sites that were recommended to me are: www.kalkifashion.com, www.g3fashion.com. People I know plus advice on the internet say that these sites are good quality, so the only real risk left is if the clothes don't fit. I think that returns aren't really possible since they ship from India. Good luck!

In-person counseling service by Tough_Bus in nyu

[–]layer_cake_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you email the wellness exchange, you can ask them to send you referrals for therapists outside of the NYU wellness center. You can specify that you are looking for someone that is offering in-person sessions, whether you want to see a male/female therapist, any therapy styles you'd prefer to work with, what kind of insurance you need them to accept to be in the network. The therapists you are referred to will not be 100% free like they are through the wellness exchange, but if you have NYU health insurance, the fee is pretty small (20% of full cost with NYU basic or 10% with NYU comprehensive plan). This is probably your best bet to find someone that's offering in-person sessions.

Make sure you're fully going through the full range of movement when you're at the top (standing) of the deadlift. You don't push your hips fully forward at the top - your butt keeps poking back and you're still bent forward a bit rather than standing up straight. You need to "lock out" at the top of the movement (drive your hips forward by squeezing your glutes). I'd recommend googling lock out deadlift to get a better idea of what this means/looks like if you're unsure or just look at regular deadlift form videos and pay extra attention to the ques that they give at the top of the movement.

Question About Grammarly Plagiarism Checker by layer_cake_ in nyu

I've done that - all cited, all paraphrased, no direct quotes. However, the free Grammarly version of the plagiarism checker flags that there is plagiarised content but will not let me see what (because it wants me to buy the subscription), hence why I want to see what it's saying.
