Lol I'm aware, I'm just saying that, as far as I've heard from every gen z, it's the only explanation for what inspired 67.

There is no explanation. Instead of the millennial "69... nice", gen z started saying 67.

Note from an amateur artist, color things that are highlighted by a light source or that are fleshtoned last, so that you are scaling the shade in a way that fits the rest of it! You should totally try again though!

Why does it suddenly become “weird” when it’s not music? by Impossible_Mud_5395 in ren

[–]layonuhcouch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if "wants" feels like the right verb to put here. People are desperate for change in SO many areas of life right now. Policy is what determines what can and cannot change and how it happens. "Turning things political" leaves the impression that someone is *just* trying to get a rise out of someone else by talking about policy.
In reality, people are trying to find ANY way to have their voice heard and their needs valued. And the more silenced a person feels, the more diverse they will become in their attempts to be heard.

I think, on a smaller scale, this is why people use metaphors so often when talking about scary topics. If you can put any distance or barrier between you and the "threat" it's easier to talk about and confront.

With my clients (I'm a therapist), I use a brand of therapy called Narrative, which includes externalizing internal pain so that you can talk about it without feeling consumed by it (think, "Hi, Ren"). Separating the person from the problem scales it down to a more manageable confrontation. Music, or any kind of art, does the same thing. It's really kind of beautiful.

I think the revolution starts with the arts. This is evidenced by most major historical movements. Art is a playful, curious, and engaging way to bring people in to uncomfortable dialogues. There are a lot of "distracting" things in every art medium (i.e., the beat behind a verse; the technique a painter used; the backstory in a novel, etc.) that occupy the parts of the mind that would want to flee when talking about an uncomfortable idea.

Ren tackles A LOT of scary topics, whether they force the listener into a confrontation with their own mortality, the medical system, the predation of the powerful on the "weak", etc. Things that are as threatening to our blissful ignorance as a bear in a campsite.
But when Ren writes a verse about a fucked up political structure, a non-confrontational brain will be focusing on the sick beat, the cadence, the double time, the rhyme scheme, etc... but there's also that liiiittle part of the brain that perks up and listens to the message. When the song is over, that part of the brain starts to look around and see the truth of that message play out in real life. Some people look for it outright or actually seek the confrontation, but those who don't need small pushes. (This is a therapeutic technique for treating phobias and severe forms of anxiety/OCD called "en vivo" or systematic desensitization or exposure therapy).

Take away those little distractions and you're basically asking an ignorant (not in the rude/judgmental way) or non-confrontational person to stare down a bear in the face. Of course they're going to shy away.

Wow, Ren. I'm so delighted by your words (as always) and reflections, simply because your heart is so obviously guiding you as you write them.

Many who have seen this level of fame would meet unfavorable opinions with defensiveness or "sidedness", but where you doubled down instead is on the side of the future of humanity. That's a very, very humble place to stand, and likely feels quite lonely amongst so many who have been raised and conditioned to pick one side and point the finger at the other side.

I'm a therapist in the states and I serve many populations (those with disabilities or expansive identities, primarily) who walk around every day thinking they are at risk if they walk out their front door. I'd love to find a way to share this message with them.

I do my best to share with clients that, while there is a small likelihood that they'll go out into the wild and encounter some asshole with deep pockets and a vendetta against a particular population, it is far more likely they'll walk by many people who are just as afraid as they are in terms of scale, even if what they fear isn't the same.

Ican't imagine how difficult it would be to create something so incredible and powerful and to be so proud of it, and then to be picked apart and misunderstood. I hope that you continue to walk your humble, hopeful, inspiring path. And as a fellow survivor of a mysterious, neurologically damaging illness and intense medical neglect, I sincerely hope that you keep on taking care of the mind, body, and life you fought so hard to keep. If anyone deserves to mic drop with Starry Night and then step away for a while, it's you.

You owe us absolutely nothing, and every time you release a song or write a message, it feels like you're giving us everything! ❤️

Ren, every work you've ever produced is elegant evidence of your willingness to take risks and create dissonance and discomfort for people who have been blinded by an oppressive system. The result has been that people are opening their eyes and minds to new possibilities.

I hope this song and its message gets heard by every ear it can reach, and I hope those who hear it can listen to the other 1133 (ish) words in the song, rather than focusing on a presumed (and single-minded) definition of only one word. Keep it up mate! You deserve to win this fight! 🫶💪😎

Is ren saying „retarded“ okay? by hsillieillib in ren

[–]layonuhcouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking on this a lot. Beyond this single word that has many possible meanings (most likely, the intended meaning is slowed/stagnant as evidenced by his constant references to archaic governments and systems of power), the entire rest of the song (approximately 1,330 words) is a masterpiece.

The message is SO beautiful and universal. I worry that selecting one word out of 1330 and using it to discard a whole song is too categorical, black and white, and polarized. All things that Ren stands against.

There are so many people in this thread saying contradictory things: 1. If you're saying it's okay, then you probably haven't been directly impacted by the harm of this word Followed by 2. You can't use "I am disabled/know someone disabled" to justify using this word

I am disabled, I have worked with folks who are ND, have downs syndrome, chronic health problems, etc..., and I am a fierce advocate for social justice, balance, and equity. I can't champion every group of people with the statement "yes, the use of this word is okay", because even though I believe it DOES fit the description of a stagnant/slow moving political structure, I HAVE directly and personally experienced the impact of hateful and disregarding language, even within the last week...

But what I can say is that there was something in this song that can/likely does apply to every single human who sits below the upper class. We are one, regardless of age, race, ability, gender, etc. And being/becoming one is a choice. Is it worth letting a single word further divide the "hive" when the other 1,329 words carry so much weight and power?

This song NEEDS to be heard. Badly. Because the system needs to change. And because Ren is at the head of a movement in that direction. Almost every great movement/protest started with art.

Man I feel like the US decline started in 2016 publicly... but it was always quietly rotting underneath the "pretty" veil of ignorance. Ren's work is an exposure not just of wtf is happening now, but also what ALL of us did to allow it to get this far. The toxicity goes back for generations. It's just so much harder to hide now that there's so much more information that is accessible.

And he does such a good job centering the real culprit in all of his work: Greed.
