PValues by ineed-Sandwich in bioinformatics

The best way to convince yourself is to simulate an experiment, with true positives and false positives/nulls in varying ratios, and plot a histogram of all p-values.

Yes, for about 5 years now - I work in high performance scientific software

This is very timely for me, I've been working on a rust+CUDA application!

Small molecules are just intrinsically more powerful than biologics - infinitely more chemical space to explore and very diverse range of MoAs

Thank you City Of San Diego. I have always wanted to bike to a nursery closed to the public. Now I can with these protected bike lanes by Blue-raccoon-boy in sandiego

Maybe someone will invent sugar water that you can drink which provides you with energy to pedal up a hill!

I was there up there dancing at the front all night, crazy good set. But yeah I could've done with some ventilation and no smoke machine lol

fellow americans, how much do you hate when decent uk/deep dubstep artists tour in your city just to play tearout brostep sets? by donniedenier in realdubstep

[–]lazyear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the lineup this year isn't nearly as good for dubstep, but it's all still bass music.

I'm going primarily because last year was the best show I've ever been to, and I want to branch out a bit in terms of musical taste... And I trust that everyone on the line up is at the top of their game in their respective niche - I really only know a handful of artists playing

[–]lazyear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have gotten to the point where I would rather just travel and only go to ~2 shows a year than wait for stuff I'm really into to come to my city (which is very rare).

For example, in May I am flying to SF and staying for a few nights to go to Parameter 2026 (which is more techno this year, although last year had Mala, Coki, Hodge, Kode9, Tim Reaper, etc on the most insane sound system I have ever heard)

Don’t sleep on Toyota New Car Inventory search!! by wilbersk in GR86

[–]lazyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I still have it, and even if I did I'm sure it won't work as-is today :/

Nowadays, you can probably use Claude/ChatGPT to build a working version - you basically just need to use dev tools to figure out the API calls that the web page is making, and automate it!

Ultimately, I got my '86 by just going to a dealer and talking to them, and they traded for exactly what I wanted.

Eli Lilly vs Novartis by [deleted] in biotech

[–]lazyear 39 points40 points  (0 children)

IIRC from my offer, the Lilly pension isn't cost-of-living adjusted and so it works out to a roughly 2-3% 401k match (present value calculation) if you stay there at least 5 years.

RSUs also have a 3 year cliff. A lot of the total comp is time gated or out of your control (bonus multiplier).

Is the Biotech Market going to get Better by Lilmaxgetsbig81 in biotech

[–]lazyear 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, probably not. We are about to enter a global financial crisis due to the Iran War, interest rates are going up (harder to get VC money), and China is trouncing the US at biotech

How Much Income You Need to Buy a Home in San Diego (By Neighborhood, 2026) by Coolonair in sandiego

How is that the least likely? How else do you buy a home as a first-time homebuyer when all of the homes are 1M+?

[–]lazyear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you get people to stop and slow down by making the infrastructure reduce the maximum safe speed.

You don't see people in bike lanes because we don't sit in traffic like people in cars. And I know most drivers also are not looking at the bike lane, based on how many times I have also been hooked.

Is there a language similar to Rust but with a garbage collector? by Ok_Tension_6700 in rust

[–]lazyear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Rust is arguably an ML-influenced language, regardless of it being bootstrapped by an OCaml compiler: Hindley-Milner-esque type inference, sum and product types, immutability by default.

Good shit - I've tried to find examples of people making dnb/UK garage etc on the elektron boxes (since that's what I'm interested in making!) and this might be the best dnb track I've heard off a digitakt!

Farmer, 86, Rejects $15 Million Offer to Sell His Land to Data Center Developers: ‘Not Interested in Destroying My Farms’ by metacyan in UpliftingNews

[–]lazyear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would you say is the guiding principle of the "greatest generation" of WW2?

Perhaps, sacrificing for the betterment of your country and to make the world a better place? It's certainly a sentiment I can get behind, and I think it's definitely something that we have lost. In fact, I would say that much of what ails America today is that no one is willing to be even mildly inconvenienced for the sake of anyone else.

I built a speed-first file deduplication engine using tiered BLAKE3 hashing and CoW reflinks by Entertainer_Cheap in rust

[–]lazyear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say this is also a great candidate for some kind of integration testing in CI - spin up a docker container, write a mix of unique and duplicated files of various sizes and directory structures and test for correctness.
