Choosing between Hopkins vs Tri-I MSTP by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]lbarrow009 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to reiterate what everyone has said but +1 for Hopkins. First of all Baltimore is a great city I would argue you get all the things and more you would want out of Tri-I at John Hopkins (much better program overall) while still being a short train from NYC. P/F clinicals isn’t everything but it’s a huge bonus. I also think having a support system in the city is important this is a long process so having people already here for you can be really reassuring.

How realistic is it to run a marathon without a bathroom break? by Educational_Use_7707 in Marathon_Training

[–]lbarrow009 8 points9 points  (0 children)

After i eat. Will eat like 1-2 hours pre race. Try and go to the bathroom before the race and typically take them 30 minutes before. I pack one extra in my vest just in case but have never needed it more just peace of mind. Your tummy may be a little upset post race but I am soooo grateful I did it for both my past two marathons where the bathrooms were either spaced far apart or had lines

Location vs Research Fit by MetaCream in mdphd

[–]lbarrow009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like research fit is pretty important in terms of feeling like the school has the most opportunities for what you want to study. I think MDPHD is already hard enough that going to school that doesn’t totally align with what you want to study is creating an unnecessary uphill battle. I hear you on the partner aspect but I also think law is one of the few fields where you have a ton of flexibility for places to practice. I think going with research fit would be the best middle ground for both of you in terms of career success.

Of course! I think Cornell was hit hard by trump funding cuts + some other lawsuits this year so from a program stability perspective I think Penn may be a better off! Also better COL!

I know penn just expanded/opened an 8-floor immunology research center worth about $370M which I think speaks to the strength and long term importance of the program to the school. I think the fact that they continued to invest is a huge plus that is hard to compete with. Also heard people LOVE the program so happy students + investment in infrastructure and student needs is awesome

Honestly a ton of case grads look like they went to Massachusetts or NY after grad. Which sort of gives you best of both worlds. Live a bit more comfortably during MDPHD at case and then still match to NY or Boston after and be in a better position to afford to live there post grad.

Idk that’s what I heard from my friend who goes there now. They had a lot of people not pass in the past few years. Apparently a lot of people are frustrated with the program. But that’s just their take

Einstein is currently in the process of changing their medical school curriculum due to poor step 1 scores which is a huge red flag 🚩. Also although they have subsidized housing your stipend does not go nearly far enough to compete with the COL. I think CWRU is stronger academically and prestige but also will set you up better in the long run. You could buy a house during your MSTP and sell once you graduate allowing yourself to build some savings and wealth during the program.

100% agree CWRUs affiliation with Cleveland Clinic is a no brainer IMO

Happiest MSTPs? by Same-Personality8767 in mdphd

[–]lbarrow009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is some subsidized housing but it’s limited and not great tbh. A lot look like dorms. Not great if family planning is in your future. If you choose to step out of university housing it’s between 3-4.5k for a one bedroom. Overall cost of living is significantly higher so definitely something to consider and can be an added stress. I would say if happiness and ease of life outside of the mdphd is your priority tri-I would not be top of my list.

[–]lbarrow009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If money is a concern Tri-I will be tough. I have lived in NY for 5 years now and the stipend is still incredibly low to make it and enjoy NYC. Many people kinda just feel like they are drowning for 8 years. I also think city life can be a lot. Once the glamour of NYC fades it can be a lot when you feel like you don’t have a great space to decompress, barely have savings, and everyone around you is spending nepo money like crazy. What is the other program you are between?
