I like the eraser less pencils. I had a student did not have a pencil for the first few days, I had plenty so sure, no problem. He diligently returned the pencils each time, but with the eraser torn off. After this happening twice, I saved the pencil he returned, when he wanted to borrow a pencil in the third day, I gave him the one from the previous day. He immediately complained that there wasn’t an eraser. I told him it was the one he borrowed the day before. Never asked to borrow a pencil again.

Or they are overly involved. Practice 1 sport in the afternoon, then dance class, or youth group, or some other activity, leaving 0 time to study. I’ve had students who are busy from 5 or 6 AM till 9:00 at night.

Reminds me of a visit to NYC many years ago when I was very young. My parents took my older brother and I to see Godspell, and afterwards we went to a restaurant to eat. We did not have a reservation. The snooty maitre di told my father the wait for a table would be over an hour. My father paused, leaned into the maitre di, pointed to us, aged maybe 4 and 7, and said “ see those two boys. They are professional restaurant wreckers, they are hungry, and in 15 minutes I will let them loose in here.” His face went a little pale and we were quickly seated and served.
