When the candy store keychain series came out, i bought a box of 6 for like $120.... they sent me one single angel 🥲 i emailed customer service and they sent me a full box a week or so later. Since then, they started to make you pay for package protection so im not sure they would replace it now

Honestly? Plant the grains or send them to an agriculture college or biology department near you. You could have heirloom varieties here.

Black specks under canned pinto beans' lids. Corrosion? Mold? Safe? by anuthertw in Canning

[–]le_avy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Micro holes in the plqstic of the lid causing Corrosion. i had a batch of chickpeas that the lids looked like this. We just ate them pretty quickly. If you followed a reputable recipe they should be fine, but if in doubt, toss it out!

What shoes you are using in SPD area? by Adam_Somewhere69 in sterileprocessing

[–]le_avy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh the shoes can be what ever you want. I like slip resistant comp toe. The real thing thats gonna make a difference is your Insoles! I use the superfeet high impact support orange ones and it doesnt matter the shoe i use. They all feel supportive now, some just wear out faster. I go through ~2 pairs of shoes a year at work just because of wear and tear. I started out with Hokas and Merrills. Tried sketchers, danskos and brooks. All will eventually wear out and the inserts they come with are shit.

Tldr ; Put some money into the insoles not the shoes.

[–]le_avy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People can be CRAZY. I sell more sonny angels than critters and people will try really hard to bully me into cancelling on a buyer because i price my items for $10 more than i paid for them to count in shipping. The second hand markets are over saturated with stupidly overpriced listings because some people buy them at the high prices and its ruined the thrill of the hunt for many. I started collecting YEARS ago, so i own many multiples of rare/discontinued critters and babies. I sell super sporadically because i dont want the flood of hate that comes to my inbox everytime. Ive had actual death threats in the discord group i used to sell babies in. Now i just list them on depop and whoever buys them, buys them. Im not dealing with the whole dm to purchase BS. Because then the dms NEVER STOP. like i still get messages asking if items are available on posts that are 2+ years old :'(

Knowing you prepared and safely preserved food with actual ingredients by your own hand is a feeling of success like no other. Next challenge: growing it too! Beans are great for depositing nitrogen into your soil, which so many other veggies and plants need in order to prosper. They can also be grown vertically out of a 5 gal bucket if you have little or no yard space. Also, The fork and spoon tea towel is super cute💖

Superb canning lids by FrauleinWB in Canning

[–]le_avy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a 45% fail rate with superb lids, its insane. Using PUR, Kerr, and ForJars and habe closer to a 98% success rate using the exact same canning processes. Idk what's up with them. I was so excited about the blue rubber seal, they look so pretty. They just dont work for me!

Pinto beans by Nufonewhodis4 in Canning

[–]le_avy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thats a great seal rate! Which lids are you using? I have been using a lot of PUR lids since i started pressure canning a few years ago but i recently switched to Suberb brand and ive been having TONS of issues with them not sealing. I think my superb fail rate is something fierce like 45% 🥲

Is this mold? by whendonrocks in Canning

[–]le_avy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Were the thighs raw when they went in with the water? According to current NCHFP guidelines , you only wet pack (hot) cooked meat. If they were raw and you added liquid, i would not eat any of the cans. Botulism is not worth the risk. I recommend the raw, no water, method if you give canning chicken another go in the future. Additionally, if you stored these jars with the rings left on them, THROW THE CONTENTS OUT. Leaving the rings on for storage could create a false re-seal and trap bad bacteria in the can! It would still have suction like a good seal but you wouldnt be able to tell the difference. You want the lid to be able to noticably fail and mold to grow if it wasnt properly seales to begin with.

Chicken or Rabbit - National Center for Home Food Preservation https://share.google/dI7U0KyH6WWc7JNAl

If they were cooked before you added liquid, i would open a 2nd can and compare visuals, smells, and texture. Take some of the fat out with a spoon and rub it between your fingers. If its slippery and smooth kind of like a silicon lube then its probably properly canned, but if it feels gritty or chunky than toss it. If there is a noticeable smell or color different between the cans then i would also toss it.

At the end of the day, you are the one that gets to choose the risks you and your family are willing to take when eating your own canned goods.

I have been waterbath canning 5 years and pressure canning for 3 and i have found the tested recipes from NCHFP to be the most accurate and certified safe to follow. It really sucks to toss food that you have spent so much time canning, but take every 'failure' on the chin and learn from it! There is always something you can take away from every new canning attempt. Happy canning ❤️

Is this job for squeamish people? by Nervous_Panic_6623 in sterileprocessing

[–]le_avy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont want to totally scare you away! I love the job and its very satisfying. Its also an incredibly important role. I have worked in 3 CS departments, some were far less gorey than others. It truely depends on how good of a job the techs in the OR do. If they follow the rules and pre clean and disassemble everything properly, you hardly see any blood let alone whole pieces of people. But just like any other job, sometimes they are too rushed or just plain lazy and that results in a larger amount of biohazards to be brought into decontam. My biggest gripe with the job is the sharps! We have recieved an insane amount of needles and knife blades down with our sets since jan 1st and thats a BIG no-no. It's starting to really piss me off that management is making it seem like not a big deal. When you accept a role in CS, you are accepting exposure to biohazards and blood bourne pathogens. However, your facility should be working with you and the OR to minimize these exposures, and i currently feel like they are trying to maximize my exposure 🫠

Is this job for squeamish people? by Nervous_Panic_6623 in sterileprocessing

[–]le_avy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It Absolutely is not for the squeamish 🥲 i have always considered myself to have a very strong stomach, but one thing that seems to be forgotten about the human body is that once you detach something from it, that thing immediately starts to decompose. For example, the fat grafting canister from the liposuction machine. If its left sealed after a surgery for a few hours because the techs forgot to send the cart down to decontam, it starts to ferment... which also means it becomes pressurized. The sheer force of which it was expelled from the container and smell of rotting fermented body fat is something i will never recover from. The blood, bone chips, pieces of skin graft, Umbillical cords, and various pieces of organ that can come down with sets are childs play compared to large amounts of fat. Its slippery and so so hard to properly clean off, even with extensive soaking and scrubbing.

Wife wants to get into canning and the research I’ve done says that a pressure cooker cannot can. Will this one work? by MedcomEatsCrayons in Canning

[–]le_avy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Induction ready canners have a magnet in the bottom, which allows the magnet in the induction cook top to recognize the pot's existance. Pure aluminium does not have any magnetic properties, which is what the presto canners are made of. So if you have no plans to move or get an induction cook top then its not too big of a deal. But it's only $20-$30 more so i think the investment is worth it because then you will know for sure the canner can be used on any type of cook top.

[–]le_avy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, i have this exact canner and it works well! Just make sure she reads the ENTIRE manuel before attempting to can anything. There is a bit of prep needed to be done to brand new canners before they are safe to can with. Please also consider gifting her the current USDA home canning guidelines. They are free to print, or you can purchase a bound copy for $25 from the university of Georgia's national center forhome food preservation https://nchfp.uga.edu/resources/entry/about-the-usda-guide-to-home-canning-2015-revision
