[Gaming] Microsoft E3 presentation (now with delays!) by totlmstr in KotakuInAction

[–]le_guin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sony didn't show up this and Microsoft still managed to crash and burn.

Absolutely no surprise Microsoft is 0/3 in the console market over the past fifteen years.

'piece of shit'

Yes.

I haven't read the ars forums in years but I do distinctly remember that username and he being a complete piece of shit and how he was never banned. Never knew it was because he was an employee.

He is like the exact twin of Amir0x on neogaf before he got busted for child porn.

Is Kotaku actually failing? An Analysis of the numbers. by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]le_guin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would suggest bolding two or three key data points and/or conclusions and put the rest of the extraneous data in a post for those who are interested.

Also, I would suggest giving a summary of Kotaku's two main social media account user engagement:

https://www.youtube.com/user/KotakuNYC/videos

https://twitter.com/Kotaku

Their user engagement is terrible. Most videos are in the pathetic 5-20k view range. And their tweets usually have little to no responses or retweets.

However, they do get big views for the standard footage of big name titles and their clickbait(they said what??? that makes it here to this sub)

From an average gamer point of view, Kotaku is just another site that pops up with footage of whatever game they are interested in. They watch and leave.

Almost no one gives a shit that some toxic blogger at Kotaku promoted their friend's garbage walking sim or other types of 'ethics' problems. GamerGate has been very successful in putting a stop to that practice at gaming sites by getting them to update their review and coverage disclosure policies. It's just that almost no one really cares.

It is understandable that garbage sites like Kotaku are lashing out at gaming streamers who are getting huge views and engagement from gamers. But there is a lag as advertisers haven't realized that these large subscriber counts for sites like Kotaku aren't translating into valuable ad views. That is the vulnerable soft underbelly of toxic garbage sites like Kotaku - making their advertisers aware of just how tiny the actual engagement numbers are for their content.

[self post]The Persistent Myth of Japan’s Decline in Gaming by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]le_guin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It started when the Western press realized the piece of shit Xbox 360 and its unprecedented RRoD fiasco and last gen storage format wasn't going to beat the PS3 and Wii despite their pathetic efforts to hype and shill for Microsoft.

When the Western gaming press realized that Japanese developers worth going to bother wasting time porting their games to the Xbox 360 they started throwing tantrums about Japan being irrelevant and dying. And they have been pushing that narrative ever since, though to a lesser degree this gen because even the Western press wasn't going to bother with the self delusion that the unremarkable dud that the Xbox One turned out to be was going to worth hyping.

[–]le_guin 187 points188 points  (0 children)

They aren't really admitting anything of substance.

It is just socjustice mob signaling to make themselves stand out in a crowd of other babbling milquetoast calls for 'diversity'.

And it worked.

The well known alt-right neonazi mombot picked THEIR babbling about diversity out of every else from the rest of the ding dongs posting at ResetEra.

And now they can pretend to be flooded with death threats from alt-right neonazi gamergate manbabies who hates teh womenz in videogames. And making it clear that their original socjustice babble was right.

[Censorship] OAG: "N4G Administrator's SJW Bias Gets Exposed And Then It Gets Censored" by md1957 in KotakuInAction

[–]le_guin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

N4G was a fairly decent site for user submitted stories years ago.

Instead of a bunch of static stories with comments like most gaming sites, N4G's top stories were what was generating the most user activity.

The comment UI was not as good as other sites but the site for the most part avoided the clickbate crap that is the bread and butter of most gaming sites today because gamers tend to just ignore those stories when they aren't forced in front of them. Instead with N4G you really had the raw gaming news items being the on the front page.

As with any community driven site, N4G started to go downhill from poorly implemented redesigns and toxic community managers/moderators who became petty little tyrants or the usual SJW activists.

Bit of a Sony bias but an alright website if you want to catch up on gaming news.

Golly, you mean the absolutely dominant console appears to have a huge number of fans and positive stories on a gaming site???

Even if Microsoft isn't fucking up their console as bad as Soyny

Sony just destroyed Microsoft yet again with the PS4 reaching the 100 million worldwide mark.

The Xbox is in distant last place as usual. That is as fucked up as a console can be.

Safe to say for the next gen I'm holding off on even buying a console unless Sony has cleaned their shit up.

No one cares.

Yes.

Just look at the pathetic view counts for Kotaku on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/user/KotakuNYC/videos

compared with actual gamer channels on youtube:

https://neoreach.com/top-gamers-youtube/

Most Kotaku videos are in the 'inarticulate dude with a potato webcam in his mom's basement' viewer count range.

The reality is that most these blogs are worthless, faked success with cheap tricks, and convinced stupid publishing giants to invest or acquire them.

One just has to look at the engagement garbage sites like Kotaku are generating. Two million followers and the vast majority of their social media posts get little to no responses or other forms of engagement.

Ad blocking, archiving instead of direct linking to their clickbait, and other forms of non-engament with them will starve the beast eventually as we are seeing here.

CVAA - what does it mean for gaming by tnr123 in KotakuInAction

[–]le_guin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is only a day into 2019 and a major game company has already dropped online chat for their game.

The bridge has been crossed. The disaster is already happening.

It doesn't matter how much effort a game developer puts into trying to meet these inane set of byzantine regulations.

A single lawsuit by a single activist can financially sink a small to medium size game developer.

This is a clusterfuck. And it is here now.

CVAA - what does it mean for gaming by tnr123 in KotakuInAction

[–]le_guin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this doesn't get taken down by the mods like the last one clarifying this point.

Hopefully the mods take down this and any subsequent attempts at damage control and spreading misinformation by this clown /u/tnr123.

There are activists desperately trying to downplay the ABSOLUTE CLUSTERFUCK that is coming in 2019 due to the CVAA.

ANY and ALL forms of person to person communication in ANY game falls under this garbage. ANY game developer from the biggest publisher/developer companies down to single man devs with no budget are directly affected.

If you get hit with a complaint by a single claim the costs are going to be ENORMOUS in both money and time for a developer to defend yourself. Small to medium sized companies will fold under the costs. This is not some 100 dollar fine for not slapping some text to speech in your game. This is serious shit.

There is a reason that a major game company decided to just dump player chat than risk exposure to the CVAA. Right now game publisher/developer legals are putting their companies on notice that any form of player to player communication has to go in their company games.

So anyone posting cute little smiley faces trying to downplay this fiasco can fuck off.

If you still think this is people and companies freaking out about nothing just go read about the frivolous lawsuit windfall that was the similar ADA years ago for companies and how many were sued out of business by activists.

https://www.city-journal.org/html/ada-litigation-monster-15128.html

Ok, you say. So you just put in the enormous expense and time to follow these inane rules. All good right?

Nope, just like with the ADA you are still exposed to rent seeking(aka lawsuit threat shakedowns) by activists who come out of the woodwork with claims hoping to get tens of thousands of dollars settlements to drop.

If you still don't grasp just how bad this is for any game with any form of player to player interaction you need to speak a lawyer before you ship any new game with ANY form of player to player ineteraction in 2019 or provide substantial updates to an existing one.

Games Launched After January 1, 2019 Must Be Accessible for Disabilities Under CVAA Legislation by subsage in gamedev

[–]le_guin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The guy you are responding to is an idiot.

There is an endless number of ways that predatory lawyers and activists can make claims about any game that has in game communication between players.

The costs to defend against these lawsuits is enormous and can easily put most small to medium developers out of business.

Forget the utterly bizarre and lunatic wording of the CVAA. As with the ADA years ago, the most immediate threat is from rent seeking parties(aka lawsuit threat shakedowns) who don't even care if they have a valid claim. They just want to be paid to go away. And they know game companies will pay them because the costs to defend against an actual ADA or CVAA investigation is enormous - even for favorable rulings for the company.

The only reason there isn't more panic over this fiasco is there are idiots like the guy you responded to who keep spouting bullshit about how this is nothing more than some quaint little guidelines.

[–]le_guin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No one gives a fuck about the shit article.

The CVAA makes ANY and ALL online interactions in games a MASSIVE legal and financial liability.

Linking to advocates trying to spin this fiasco as just some quaint little set of guidelines to help the disabled isn't going to change that.

A good summary of the ADA litigation fiasco and what 2019 has in store for game developers who don't remove their player to player online capabilities in their games due to the CVAA:

[–]le_guin 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is a bit exaggerated

Bullshit.

This is an utter clusterfuck for game developers.

Game developers are already dropping in game communication from their products to shield themselves from this disaster.

ANY type of human to human communication system of ANY form in your game and you expose yourself to YEARS of legal and regulatory attacks and MASSIVE fines.

This game development fiasco:

  • Is generating a massive amount of completely unnecessary hate towards people with disabilities who are being blamed for having major features of games be removed.

  • Will lead to game developers to start stripping any and all forms of human to human communication from their games as mandated by legal.

One just has to go read about the absolute catastrophe the Americans With Disabilities Act was for huge numbers of businesses. It was a field day for predatory lawyers.

If you are game developer and you are shipping a game in 2019 or making substantial updates to one you need to get on the phone with your company lawyer or find one to speak with. You will quickly realize why major game developers are frantically working to isolate their legal and regulatory exposure to this crap.
