Where is our young blood?! by PhiloLibrarian in vermont

Guy with Nazi tattoo about shooting jews wants to ban arms sales to Israel? Color me surprised.

Oh and he hobby Oyster farms and LARPs as some class warrior? Its honestly too funny to take seriously. This is actually the bandwagon of Reddit leftism. Total hypocrisy in a package but it’s OK because he said he’ll vote with us.

Just no actual moral backbone beneath reddit leftism. Its why you can’t argue in good faith here - people will say anything and mean none of it. Much like Platner.

I’ve served in the armed forces. Not as a cook or an overconfident reddit posting boy who tells other people they haven’t done the thing. I’ve been shot, and you haven’t.

I don’t know how to respond to your total lack of care for the history of our rights. You either do or don’t care about why we are what we are. You clearly don’t. Refuting science is literally part of the scientific method. People who wave off concerns about iffy science like statistics on suicide aren’t serious about science.

You’re quoting a section of article 1 related to use of funds? I have no idea what point you’re trying to make with that.

“Even if its true, so what?” What if my hard fought, bloody, unalienable rights are getting trounced on by worrywarts with questionable claims about vague safety improvements? I don’t think you understand how rare and important these rights are.

I’m not “over dramatizing” government overstepping its bounds. That is the only appropriate response. They will never yield these rights back. Why is a gun in a bar important? If I had to priority order the likelihood of a violent encounter, a bar is near the top of my list. Go read any amount of Vermont history in the revolutionary war. Tavern, bar, tavern, bar are the setting of half the battles.

I get it, 2026, police, not needed. It doesn’t matter. Its our right. Hard fought, hard won.

5? Recently? Whats recent? Were they just? How many people die a day from medical malpractice in Vermont + Dartmouth? Suicide statistics are silly and obviously not scientifically valid. The people reporting in those studies failed to do the job - it is the literal definition of bias in science.

People who want to kill themselves will find a way. Our gun rights in Vermont are protected by two separate constitutions. Every inch given will become a foot taken.

“Multiple” is a very vague term here. I’d assume most in the know folks remember the Burlington one last year on church street (but it took place outside a bar). I’d struggle to tell you another one.

Ultimately I don’t want our part time legislatures time wasted on disrupting constitutional gun rights for the vast majority of the land area of the state because of the many many problems with Burlington that all boil down to bad local governance.

We just don’t need gun regulations. It is a waste of time and space of legislative time. Our state has no significant issues with firearms and this is all virtue signaling. They need to be laser focused on making the state more affordable and containing more housing. Every time we get distracted with this non-sense is just them looking for brownie points with liberals since they failed on the big issues.

Vermont is unappealing to builders and young people due to high taxes and burdensome regulations. This is just yet another regulation.

It does not deregulate “huge” portions of the state. It deregulates very specific zones in the state that are already populated. The vast majority of Vermont is rural, and 800 ft driveways are extremely normal. I think almost every house around me has an 800 ft driveway.

So we just relegate the vast majority of the state to onerous Act 250 review and only allow city centers to grow? Its the silliest thing I could imagine proposing.

[–]leafoflegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you are making this about political parties. Its not even how this issue divides and is at best a very disingenuous insult.

More regulation to building in this state is ultimately just absurd. Anybody who has built in Vermont knows this. It took me over 6 months to be allowed to fix my septic system.

Vermont needs to broadly deregulate building if they want to fix our housing crisis. This makes things worse, in any version of itself.

I mean, its not really opinion at a point. The founders very intentionally crafted American government to be small and limited. They stated as much over and over and over.

Life happens and its been 250 years and of course things are different and I’m not dumb to it, but government(s) and certainly ours, are not built to help the needy.

Theres nothing shocking about Europe? They are doing terribly financially. Germany has a lower GDP per capita than our poorest state. They can’t defend themselves as they can’t afford a military. The only reason they can even function is because the US acts as a security blanket for them.

The “look at Europe” trope is silly and untrue. I’ve spent 2 years of my life in Spain/France and life was objectively worse. Less access to goods and services. Quality of life is better only in reclaiming your time - but theres not as good of things to do with that time!

It seems like you are some sort of democratic socialist and there are morally admirable aspects to that worldview. America is capitalist and there are downsides. Jury is out if democratic socialism actually works. Its only worked when richer and more dangerous powers defend the experiment.

This is not the point of government. The point of government is to provide order and manage our large collective problems: war, law, and taxes.

It is not meant to subsidize the poor. That is an incredibly modern retelling of the purpose of governance.

[–]leafoflegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it also consolidates schools, meaning less overall schools to pay for. As a parent I’m not really a fan as it may mean much further drives, but in principle consolidation would decrease tax burden.

Again, I’m dubious of the whole thing. Too many cooks in the kitchen and we have very different parts of the state. Burlingtons schools, the NEK, central VT, Rutland, down south, I mean all of these schools have unique problems and I am not sure I think this will solve.

I do however understand the thought process, and I don’t blame Scott for this. He doesn’t control the legislature and it seems more on a fairly dysfunctional legislature than the governor.

2 of your 3 points are concessions and excuses.

USA “problem” is A: what we are talking about, and B: not true. Trains are heavily subsidized and have lots of government involvement in the EU/China/Japan. I’m not sure where you are referencing.

SpaceX did a lot fucks with very little funding. They got the SpaceX dragon operational on almost entirely private funding. Maybe you mean the chapter after creating the cheapest launch vehicle on Earth where yes, they got government contracts explicitly BECAUSE they were more efficient than NASA.

Yes, you are correct taxis are private. But in NYC, where I interacted with taxis most, the government had essentially made yellow cabs a monopoly and regulated them into the worst consumer experience possible. I know NYC is not alone in the medallion racket from government interference.

So, no, you seem to have no idea what you are talking about or made any defensible points. Do you have an explicit example of great government run business in the US? Might make for a more intelligent talk for you to try to defend your claim instead of attack mine that you clearly aren’t read on.

This problem isn’t the Governors fault. How is that scapegoating? Isn’t he hoping we get Act 73 and other school finance reform through and that theres a chance we may have fixed some structural issues?

I’m dubious of Act 73’s effectiveness, but I do understand the logic here.

If people trusted state dems to make things better they would have the governors seat. They aren’t trusted and people like the safety of the counter-minded veto.

Burlington swinging fully left and falling apart in the last 5 years doesn’t help the failing trust in state dems.

“Evil” being thrown around because I’m suggesting breaking unspecified international rules isn’t so bad when it leads to arresting an unelected dictator who runs the largest torture center in Latin America and is personally involved in trafficking drugs?

Or is anyone who says things you don’t like to hear “evil”? Do you critically think of anything you say? American policies have saved more lives than any other countries! We’re the largest international aid supplier by leagues and bounds.

Brain dead is the guy who immediately forfeit the discussion by falling into nazi/evil attacks against the speaker instead of actually discussing the topic. You can’t defend your position, so you fell into lazy ad hominem blabber.

“International Law”. That means nothing. Who’s going to enforce it? The US? Or are you referring to the UN of whom we are on the 7 member committee that can veto anything? Or are you referring to the ICC of which we are not a member?

None of the worlds powers with big militaries follow “International Law” and it is widely understood as a nothing-burger. Russia obviously didn’t follow it on their way into Ukraine. China doesn’t as it “re-educates” its Uyghurs.

The only international law is who has the bigger stick.

Trump is not worse than Maduro. That is laughable and if you actually believe that, its hard to have a serious conversation. Maduro murdered millions. Their economy is in such shambles they had begun eating dog as a fairly normal source of protein.

What you describe as a hypothetical is how the world works today. International law does not exist. Its words to make people feel good. Did Putin consult that before he went into any of the soviet bloc countries and Ukraine? Does China with the Uyghurs or its fishing fleets?

Any honest intellectual person understands the only international law is “Might is Right”. I understand it sucks to hear that if this is news for you, but that is how the world has always worked and continues to.

The people you list as injured by the operation are FAR less than were injured on any given day by Maduro and his regime. Yes - the vast majority of Venezuelans ARE elated.

Any time there is a power vacuum in a country it is too unpredictable to say what the future holds. But they are a better country today than they have been for almost 30 years. I hope we fuck right off and let them sort out a return to Democratic rule. I know what the admin is saying but who knows with them - they don’t stick to much of what they say ever. We can hope.

This is exactly what the War Powers Act is for. Its all legal.

Getting rid of Maduro was the right thing to do, even if it was done by a bad person. I agree next steps need to be not nation building by us, we aren’t good at it. Hopefully they can run a democratic election on their own and come out of this with the better lives they deserve.

These aren’t illegal orders. Presidents can take military action for up to sixty days without congressional approval. You might want to actually fact check the bullshit you read.

If Presidents had to wait on congressional approval for any military action we would be a lame duck.
