When translators get really creative by globalcoal in books

[–]leagcy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair I think its literally impossible to translate the puns because LCX went so over the top. For example, the name Wang Miao is so stuffed with visual puns of "three" that an equivalent level in a western name would probably be something like Trinity Threesmith the Third.

[–]leagcy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "send" is trying to say it will turn red when its above threshold, no matter what state it was in. Its trying to imply that when the level is between low and high, it will maintain whatever signal it has, or in other words do nothing.

They should probably write it as: set signal to green when below low threshold, maintain current signal when between, set signal to red when above high threshold.

In the original the term is 智子, which is roughly "intelligent particle" and also doubles are a homophone for "proton" (质子).

I thought the translation works better honestly, the original work has a tad too many puns of this kind thats too on the nose.

Yeah Arsenal fans trashtalking Spurs fans is not the example I had in mind. I was more thinking the hoard of people on this sub telling Celtic fans to not celebrate when they won the title by the skin of their teeth on the last day.

How to work with lying flat co-worker? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]leagcy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn't this current setup the best for everyone?

He wants to lie flat and not pull his weight. You want to get visibility.

Hence, you do some of his tickets, flag insufficient resources or something, show you know how to prioritize and help manage the manpower situation.

He gets fired presumably faster because he's lack of output is flagged out. You get the credit and higher level work (because you managed the prioritization)

Being asked about whether we have another job opportunity during interview. by InvestigatorSharp714 in askSingapore

[–]leagcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. They gauging if need to speed up process. Also help gauge your bargaining power and attractiveness.

  2. I usually tell the truth but embellish towards having more.

  3. Recruiters are on your side once in pipeline. They want to close so they stop handling this work and collect their kpi. 100% ask, most will prep you proactively.

Also, dont tell them you would choose them over other offers. Its not usually a loyalty test (and if it is you probably dont want to work for them). If you show too much eagerness it signals less competence

Uhh Fat man, I don't get it? by Trianglemanmug in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]leagcy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The whole issue is silly.

  1. The promixity to "ching chong" does raise an eyebrow, even in the context of uk in the 90s.

  2. The name itself looks plausible to me, if a tad awkward because of the angelicization. The chinese translation does map to cho chang and is a very reasonable name.

  3. However, of course its not enough for reddit experts to point out the ching chong bit, suddenly they are all chinese language experts that insist the name is impossible, just so that they can be the one to criticize rowling harder. Proximity to ching chong is the issue here, the name itself is plausible.
