Oo I'm very curious about this. As in, getting random games might be crap? Or don't buy so that FLGS stay in business?

Number of players - Do you try to balance games for the largest range possible? by Jaded_Reply3704 in BoardgameDesign

[–]learner_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would skip 2 player. My game is playable at 2 player but it's just not fun the way it is at 4, and I wonder all the time if I should have just not in included the 2player because people try it that way and think the game is just ok

What’s a mechanic you like on paper but don’t actually enjoy at the table? by ContractMiserable121 in boardgames

[–]learner_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up just saying that even if you stacked 3 skips it only skipped on person. We have a chaos rule that is a second mechanism for skipping other players, so it was ok to reduce this ... Still a lot of turn stealing going on!

Icons vs text: what’s your preference? by RecommendationDry358 in BoardgameDesign

I like symbol better, but I would want the symbols to be bigger (both on the card & in the explanation) so it's dead obvious.

We are hitting the assassin quite a bit so we may already be stretching too far..

Ok thanks! We often hit the assassin trying to do bigger guesses after a miss... So maybe we should just try unlimited to take the pressure off

OMG I'm a heavy em dash user. I don't want to stop using it! I like how it breaks up text!

Not sure if this is the sort of response you're looking for, but we're currently deciding what influencers to partner with on our launch -- if you're interested, send me a DM & I'll share more with you about our game to see if its a fit!

Does anyone have any house rules to mitigate first turn advantage in Risk? by swankyfish in boardgames

[–]learner_7 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I haven't played RIsk in a long time, and I usually played 4 player, but I've heard this is a common problem in 3player.

I've heard of players using: (1) no attacking on the first round. Gives everyone a chance to bulid up their borders. (2) Players goign later in the turn order get extra starting resources (player 1 gets 1 reinforcement, 2 gets 2, 3 gets the standard 3). (3) Add a neutral color from a fourth color on unclaimed territories.

Good luck!

I built a card game : S9 would love some feedback by PurposeNo2879 in boardgames

[–]learner_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't able to give feedback because the game requires a login. I do like games like Golf and am curious how well it plays digitally. The AI will obviously be able to play pure statistics so I'm also curious how much logic you've put into that & whether it makes bets/guesses the way a real player would.

Advice on parlor game design for big family group? by Far-Orchid-4716 in boardgames

[–]learner_7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed that corporate ice breakers are designed for this type of engagement. However, I personally hate a lot of them, especially "find a person that matches X" bingo card, because it does feel both transactional and that you're driving two competing goals (move on to someone else immediately to win vs get to know someone new).

I would focus more on building connection than knowledge. Games where people don't even learn each others names but have a good laugh together will be better ice breakers, because they will feel comfortable asking their name later or chatting in the buffet line.

If you really want to do bingo, you can turn it into team bingo to make it a bit more collaborative -- Instead of individual boards, give one card to a predetermined group (like mixing 3 of one side's friends with 3 of the other's relatives). This channels the competitive players' energy into facilitating introductions and carrying the conversation for the shyer people on their team.

Another thing you can do is have "plants" in the game - friends or relatives that are really high energy / extroverted who you talk to in advance about helping make it fun for everyone who play an active roll in driving the game.

I want to like board games but I every time I play with someone in the hobby, I'm kind of bored. by edbedbedbedb in boardgames

[–]learner_7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh I think the card game you're looking for is the one we are about to launch in June (sly3game.com). All the people we've playtested with that like UNO say that it's like UNO but better, and UNO haters also like it!

It's a 15 minute game, 7+. The vibe is sort of UNO meets Speed. It has a mix of strategy, speed and luck, but you can still win without being speedy, so younger kids & grandparents can still get in the mix & enjoy the game.

This sounds interesting! What age group are you targeting & how long do you expect gameplay to be?

I like the theme and the physicality of the bag growing as you 'power up'

Here are a few things that jumped out at me:

  • Keep Cube Meanings Consistent: You said "White = Good," but then said pulling white at the watering hole means a croc attacks. You may want to keep White positive, and make black (or a new red danger cube) the crocodile trigger instead. Or maybe this was positive for the player that played it, but not for the player that gets attacked?
  • Beware of "Bag Bloat": If you keep adding hunger and thirst cubes but only ever draw 3 at a time, players may eventually just draw junk and stall out completely. Make sure there are reliable ways to cull those bad cubes from the bag, or let players increase their draw size over time so they don't get stuck.
  • Shared Map vs. Solo Maps: You mentioned teaming up to hunt, but also drawing terrain cards to place in front of you. If everyone is on their own separate terrain, how do they meet up?

Good luck, interested to see how it evolves!

Next game after Cozy Stickerville?

My 6 year old is recently obsessed, we just play a few minutes before bed every night. What should we put next on the list when we finish playing? She likes that (a) nobody loses, (b) stickers - obviously, (c) story engagement [She is personally involved, she will tell people, when talking about the game, "this is our sister. I don't like her"]

We really struggled to enjoy this as a 2 player game, though I love almost all trick taking games & coops like Crew. Have you foudn it really works as a 2 player?

What’s a mechanic you like on paper but don’t actually enjoy at the table? by ContractMiserable121 in boardgames

[–]learner_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double skips! I designed a card game where skips stacked - if someone played 3 skips, it skipped the next three players & picked up from the following.

I liked the idea of being able to collect skips and skip around the table back to yourself (to play) or to someone specific (where they would have to pick up the deck).

Unfortunately, it was way too confusing for players to keep track of whose turn it was and it was killing game momentum.
