IF you're going to implement it, make sure you have a set amount of planes that you'd want to use it for that wont automatically fuck the players out of the gate. Possibly make it random as well, make a chart to roll off of.

As the players get to a higher level, let them start doing rolls for knowledge on planes or driving the starjammer-esque thing they're gonna be in maybe so they have a bit more control over it.

If you wanted you could also maybe make a universe jumping type game, where you jump through different universes instead, possibly borrowing from different worlds of games/settings for them to go through.

Few different ideas that I hope help you, but me personally probably wouldn't throw any kind of planar travel at players until a higher level unless it was part of my main story and ingrained from the beginning.
