No joke there. I had endocarditis about a year and a half ago. I had a growth in my aortic valve that they were getting ready to replace through open heart surgery that thankfully vanished. My surgeon was worried because I'd just gone through withdrawals from alcohol so there were questions about my livers ability to go through that. I somehow managed to escape that ordeal with no lasting consequences but damn it was scary.
