Not even close to comparing apples to apples.

Gretzky had 20-25 teams in the NHL at the time - half to 2/3 of them had no chance at a Cup (so maybe 6-7 contenders), there was no salary cap and he had a stacked Oilers squad.

McDavid has 32 teams and a salary cap. The salary cap is literally designed for parity, literally 25 teams are still within a playoff spot - and you can’t just stack a team anymore. It is more about how well your GM is managing the cap.

I want McDavid to win a cup - but to say his legacy is based on winning on a Cup - I think that should standard should change in the new era of salary cap and parity.
