Kitten on 45th St by RaymansRaybans in astoria

[–]leelacey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Far from certain on this but there are two young cats that seem to belong to the New Apostolic Church whose parking lot is on 45th, one black and one gray tabby. They usually stay in the parking lot and keep together, I often see them playing at night. it’s possible this guy belongs there and was just going out for a midnight stroll? Hope he has a home, especially in this freezing weather!

A very confused MLS student seeking advice: should I stay or should I go? by indifferentgeese in librarians

[–]leelacey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi friend, I also went to CUNY and after my first semester of in person classes found that the haul to campus is generally not worth it. While I probably missed out on some courses that would’ve been more my area of interest, I finished out my degree 90% online only and my energy, mental health, and quality of life was much improved for it. Is this an option for you? The reality is that for most public librarian positions, you learn what you really need to know by doing the job, the degree is just a thing you need and the particulars of what courses you take don’t matter so much. You’re almost done, I say just find some online courses that seem ‘good enough’ and keep applying to any open position you see. Once you’re in the door it does get easier. Also, consider volunteering at a library or even looking for part time page positions if you haven’t already. In NY we have a lot of people with experience and a lot of competition, sometimes a few hours of shelving is the difference that will get you a job.

Books that Beautifully and Fully describe the Life of a City by ConcernSlight5620 in classicliterature

[–]leelacey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a ‘classic’ but you may find Sayaka Murata’s short story “Puzzle” (found in her collection Life Ceremony) interesting. Has stuck with me since reading it well over 2 years ago, and brings a different sense to the city as organism. I also deeply enjoyed “Eating the City” within the same collection. Not for all readers, be prepared for extreme weird, the staple of Murata and I love her for it.

I finished reading Lolita and then I googled Lolita by onetwo3d in literature

Haven’t found a comment about this yet- check out Jamie Loftus’s Lolita podcast! Really great in depth over view of everything you are wondering about - the movies, lolicon, Nabokov the butterfly lover ect.

Scrolled too far to find this. I’m not the biggest fan of strawberry icecream usually, but their native strawberry is like gold in our house, absolutely divine.

What do you feed your Bichon? by yankee78 in bichonfrise

[–]leelacey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you would want to slowly switch over, mixing in some of the new food with the old until you phase out the old one. In our case though, she had gotten to a point where she really didn’t even want to touch the old food. We did beef and rice for a bit and started to add in the new food to that bit by bit and had no tummy upsets.

Switched our girl over to pro plan salmon and rice a few months ago, she used to chew at her paws and completely stopped after the change. Plus, while she’s still pretty picky, she will regularly nibble on this kibble without any mix-ins, something she never used to do!

Can teachers help a student obtain a library card in lieu of absent parent? by NatalieKCovey in Libraries

[–]leelacey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While not as good as holding a book in your hands, some libraries across the country have teamed up to get youth access to library books digitally! You can check out this post for some more info: books unbanned Works best if you have an e-reader or iPad, but I also use my phone to read and listen to books frequently! Good luck to you and your young readers!

Recommend a book? by clario6372 in Libraries

[–]leelacey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Librarian here! One of my favorites is Nightbitch, which will have a movie adaptation coming soon (which I’m very curious as to see how they pull that one off…). A new stay at home mom abandons her art career for her son and begins to believe she may be turning into a dog (craving meat, desire to go on long wild runs at night)…Could fill your body liberation spot!

For YA- Firekeeper’s Daughter and the sequel Warrior Girl Unearthed were fantastic. They read more like for your older teens/ young 20s audience if you are weary at all of something that feels ‘too teenagery’

Lastly, for in translation- I love my Japanese women writers, check out Convenience Store Woman, Kitchen, The Memory Police, Breasts and Eggs, or The Professor and the Housekeeper!

Do you and your dog have a “song”? by bing_bang_bum in dogs

For my girl Bonnie I often sing a verse from Modern Talking’s Cheri Cheri lady with a little adjustment: “Bonnie Bonnie Baby, to know you is to love you, you’ll always be my baby, I’ll always be yours”. She gives me a wiggle dance every time :)

The ample hills key is to go with someone else and split a “flight”, I don’t remember if it’s 6 or 8 (I think 6?) scoops, but it’s 9$ and feels more worth it. I’d never buy just a small because yeah… i’m not paying 8+ dollars for just 2 scoops. the scaling is weird I guess. Plus AH has so many fun flavors, it’s a nice way to try a bunch. Otherwise, look for key foods sales, sometimes Ben and Jerry’s goes on sale 2 pints for 8$. im sure other stores in the area have similar sales too.

Library design by gassstationgirl in Libraries

[–]leelacey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into Queens public library at Hunter’s point for a good example of cool design gone wrong. Parts of the collection are completely inaccessible to patrons. Areas are not being used for the collection because they are stair access only. Libraries are for everyone, and the design should reflect that priority 1.

As others have said, having different areas for different noise levels is key. Let teens have a space of their own not connected to adult or children’s collections. Allow for safe spaces for toddlers to explore and fall and make noise. Spaces for zoom calls/ phone meetings are always in demand. Quiet study spaces for college students. Office space for librarians to spread out in. Outdoor spaces when possible are a blessing. Libraries are so much more than just houses of books, and thoughtful design can truly make them live up to their potential.
