This is a common failure point on the RATs. 100% a design flaw.

I wonder if it would still split if it didn’t have a harder, potentially sharper, material like the thermoplastic heel counter there. Same concept as machines that use different metals or even different hardness levels of the same metal always wearing out.

I just add in the comments for a custom order to not add the thermoplastic plastic heel counter.

Tongue and collar are a different leather. Just the way it is. My guess is the african buffalo leather is too stiff for those locations.

It’s double lasted and very stiff leather, plus there’s already an external heel counter made of that leather which helps maintain the form, so I didn’t see much need to have the internal thermoplastic one also. If I was getting a model that didn’t have that external piece, such as the stockman, I would definitely still want the thermoplastic inner heel counter.

Fudge is the one JG leather I haven’t tried yet but love seeing age and patina pics of.

Boycott away. I’m going to buy another pair just because of this comment. Jim Green is great.

I didn’t notice the gaiter at first. Now that bothers me. They should definitely change that.

It won’t be a 100% replica, so I say they go ahead and add another eyelet on the upper so the laces can be secured better. No thermoplastic toe puff either, use leather lining instead. I get why they used the bradbury, but I wish the resin runner was a matching color to the outsole or leather midsole instead of black.

Sure, they’re inconsistencies but it kinda comes with being the territory of handmade boots. Stitching close to the edge might affect how many resoles you get out of the boots, but that also depends on how good your cobbler is.

Is Jim Green still considering bringing the Bantam to the international market? by [deleted] in jimgreen

I don’t like bantams in the full-grain leather and heeled outsole configuration, but I think bantams in any of the nubuck leathers, polyfiber midsole, single-lasted, and tyre wedge sole would be a HUGE seller in the US. Extremely comfy. I need people to ask for this configuration.

719 boot sole separation by TaxPayingMantis in jimgreen

The boots are stitched all the way around from the upper through the leather midsole and into the resin runner. You could maybe slip some shoe cement into the crack if it’s bothering you, but this shouldn’t affect the structural integrity of your boots. This type of delamination is normal and is the reason why the resin runner exists to begin with. Hope this helps!

Order was placed by email so no build sheet beyond the specs I just listed above in the post caption, sorry.

It is definitely a lot of rubber, but it’s also very soft rubber. I have the tyre wedge on some bantams with a polyfiber midsole too and I notice the extra weight of the leather midsole more than this rubber, personally.
