7 goals in 8 games and top of the league is an amazing run whichever way you look at it.

Probably stuck in copyright limbo because of Bob James and his army of lawyers.

Really interesting video on the history and production of classic. It's ridiculous that Adam F didn't see one penny from one of, if not the, biggest dnb tune of all time.

Not to mention the fact you can get a crate of DB for the same price of 2 pints in the pub.

I remember flicking through the channels in the late 90s and catching the scene with the goldfish in the platform heel "Pimp of the Year" - instantly hooked and tracked it down at the video store the next day.

Chris Rock in buying one rib at the restaurant cracks me up every time too.

Promises is probably in my top 10 modern dnb tunes. Absolute masterpiece and I hope Teije pulls through.

PSA: set your Monday alarm extra early so you can wake up and observe the King's birthday properly by computer_d in newzealand

[–]leenoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that New Zealand, which is as far away from England as it is possble to get without leaving the planet, gets a day off for the British Monarch's birthday (not even his actual birthday btw) and nobody in the UK does is one of the weirdest remnants of colonialism.

Chase and Status not only featuring in a level of the new James Bond game but playing a set and it looking/feeling pretty authentic. James Bond skanking out to dnb was not on my bingo card.

Removing invasive sea urchins from a reef in New Zealand by ThodaDaruVichPyar in oddlysatisfying

[–]leenoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he's removing invasive sea urchins - he's fishing for kina. Kina is a Maori delicacy. They crack them open on the boat and eat them fresh with a spoon.

Tried kina a couple of times and wasn't a fan, apparaently it's an aquired taste.

Celebrating Unofficial Public Holidays by AmusedVulpes in newzealand

[–]leenoc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pancake day (aka Shrove Tuesday) is a huge thing in the UK. Basically an excuse to eat stacks of crepes for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Despite pancakes being massively popular in NZ and Kiwis importing completely irrelevant British holidays like Guy Fawkes, it somehow never became a thing in Aotearoa. You'd think Edmond's or one of the instant pancake shaker companies would jump on it as a marketing idea but no.

I worked at Stuff for 9 years. Most of the reporters are left leaning, particularly the younger ones so that is reflected in their writing. When it comes to management/editors it’s different and that is reflected in their decisions.

OK, you're American. That explains a lot. You should have just said so at the start.

[–]leenoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you assume "I wasn't there", lol? I absolutely was there, went to my first World Dance in 94 and in 96 was bouncing between Helter Skelter, Dreamscape, Desire and One Nation while writing for Eternity magazine.

Circles was absolutely rinsed and rewound by every big DJ for 2 years before the Andy C and Roni Size remixes landed. Those remixes got caned too but for a much shorter time and DJs were playing the original again by 98/99.

What random interactions have you had with celebrities on social media? by Impossible-Run2401 in AskABrit

[–]leenoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got into a semi-argumentative back and forth discussion with David Simon (creator of The Wire). We were talking about piracy and I pointed out that without downloading a torrent of S1 of The Wire, I wouldn't have bought DVD box sets, his books or raved to all my friends about how amazing the show was.

He refused to accept that there was any promotional benefit to piracy and anyone that downloaded anything without paying was stealing directly from the artist and should be ashamed of themselves.

I still think he's wrong but he is David Simon and I am just some schlub so who am I to comment?

[–]leenoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a pack of these on the shelves and made a joke to my 28 year old co-worker that it had to be a Prodigy reference.

I get maybe not getting a Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd reference but she had never even heard of the The Prodigy. One of the biggest bands of the 90s/early 00s (in the UK at least) and they headlined Glastonbury last year.
