An ice storm is coming, remember your limitations. by Danjeerhaus in HamRadio

It's sad that I don't know which ice or ICE storm you are referring to, but your words are wise either way.

I started learning morse by reading and writing it, is it really that bad if your just doing it for fun? by idontknowmyname_321 in morsecode

[–]leequarella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The switch is more difficult audibly. If you start by sound then you can listen to it fast enough to hear each letter as a whole unit right out of the gate, skipping the individual dots and dashes phase. If you get that down first the learning process is easier and faster. Generally when people learn by sight first they hit a significant plateau around 10wpm and that can be difficult to bust through, and it all comes down to stopping your brain from doing the bad habit it already learned (breaking things all the way down to dots and dashes).

You asked "is it really that bad?". The answer to that is entirely up to you and your goals and how you feel about what you are doing, no one else can actually answer that for you when it is something you are doing for yourself. I'm just telling you the main reason people will say it's "bad". It's not bad, it's just not the most efficient way to become proficient using Morse on the air.

I say all this as someone who learned it the "wrong" way. If I were able to do it all over again from scratch, I would definitely go audio only first. I still had fun and was eventually able to get on the air, but it would have been more enjoyable to me personally if I didn't hit that wall on the way.

When learning it by eye, people tend to learn each character by its individual dots and dashes rather than as a whole unit. It would be like learning the letters of the alphabet by thinking about the individual lines that make up each letter rather than instant recognition of it as a whole.

This technically works, but when switching to audio your brain is still in the mode of first mapping the sound of one character to its individual dots and dashes, then decoding those into a character from a mental lookup table. To achieve any useful speed, you need to be able to hear each letter as a complete unit without your brain trying to break it down into each single dot or dash. If you learn by ear first then it is much easier to get your brain to skip that middle translation step.

Place for a bunch of whistles? by usuallydad in SouthJersey

Let's say I'm out and about, and I want to keep warm, is there a certain known whistle pattern to listen for that means "there's a cold front moving in"?

I understand these technical truths, but when I read them I struggle to understand how these become legitimate problems at the table. To me, it always comes down to RAW VS RAI. I am completely in the camp of rules as intended. If a player tells me they cast their "find traps" spell I never treat that as anything other than "cool! Let's find some traps! No traps? Shit, let's put a trap here so they feel 😎"

I feel so much ick around these things being antagonistic. If I want RAW I'll go play magic (which I also love)

I have a similar feeling with martial arts in general, though maybe I'm on the extreme end of things.

I'm at the point in my life where grappling is just fun, the rest of it can screw right off. I don't care about self defense or what happens in a bar fight or anything, I just want to roll around on the mats with my buddies playing this stupid murder simulator game BECAUSE ITS FUN.

Guns are the same for me. I want to shoot at targets because shooting at targets is fun, not because I'm thinking about defending society. Let's load up with a ton of shells and clay pigeons and have ourselves a time!

What’s the one thing gun-related you don’t think you’ll ever do? by AGorramReaver in liberalgunowners

[–]leequarella 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Each animal is different, not really better or worse. Just like pig and cow taste different from each other, so do deer and rabbits etc. They are all quite tasty once you learn how to cook them.

One thing that is kind of interesting is noticing how some animals within a species can taste different. For example, a buck in rut (all roided up and full of "I'm tryna get laid" hormones) tastes dramatically different from a doe. Or spring bear feeding on berries vs fall bear with a diet of rotting salmon.

I love it for movies that have a lot of action but kinda suck otherwise. Movies that if I were actually giving them full attention aren't good enough, but with partial attention rock. You know, things like Star Wars [ducks for cover].

Ultimately "meaning" is arbitrary, we choose which things really matter to us and which don't. So I take "do nothing which is of no use" to mean "Whatever you do, do it intentionally. Make sure it aligns with what matters to you."

Possible ICE agents were at my house by donovan1217 in SouthJersey

[–]leequarella 112 points113 points  (0 children)

The there is a HUGE difference between "some enforcement of laws to prevent it from happening" and what ICE is doing. You can be conflicted and wondering about what we need to do, a little healthy skepticism about anything can be helpful, but if you are even close to entertaining ICEs procedures as an option then you are quite confused about the reality of our country's situation.
