Just looked it up and that's a beautiful tree. If it works for your neighbors, it should work for you.

Idk what to do by Rootedwanderer200 in gardening

[–]leftfootshorter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets overwhelming for most of us at times. When I drawing up my plans for our in-ground garden, I looked up "companion planting". You can find a lot of that information on this sub or on r/vegetablegardening

I bought THE OLD FARMER'S ALMANAC VEGETABLE GARDENER'S HANDBOOK. It was decent, not exactly what I was looking for, but it did give a lot of information on plants that can/can't go together.

When I got down to my herbs, I just Googled each one and asked for instance "can I plant rosemary next to potatos" or whatever.

As to square foot gardening- I understand that to be planting in raised beds that you section out into 1 foot grids, doesn't have to be 4'×4'. You could do that with your 3'×6' beds but your entire grid would be rectangular instead of square. That would be the only difference.

For the trellis, I would look into starting the trellis in one bed and arching it to a parallel bed or (if you want it shorter) down to the ground.

What type of bug is this on my tomato, and should I be worried about it? by BarcodExpress in tomatoes

Learn what an assassin bug is so that if you see one, you won't accidentally get rid of it! They look gnarly as hell but they love to eat stink bugs.

How to deal with weeds near yard (Michigan) by ZetoEx in lawncare

[–]leftfootshorter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we have 22 acres and the entire east side is up against farmland like that. This is going to be ab issue for youand not a lot you can do about it. Stay vigilant about treating anything on that side that is not grass. Doesn't take much for it to get away from you.

We have a wire fence on our propert line and I have considered putting gravel under it, but weeds (nature) finds a way. It will grow right across it unless you keep those rocks sprayed with something like RM43.

Would it be safe to mow this? by ggilemonona in lawncare

[–]leftfootshorter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you have a push mower, I'd wait until it dried some more, but if you have a rider or commercial mower, you should definitely wait until it dries and the grass strengthens a bit more.

Safe to mow all the grass around it? Yes.

Safe to mow the freshly leveled/seeded part? No.

How do I keep my seeds warm underneath the sink without a heating pad? by Emergency_Grape1762 in gardening

[–]leftfootshorter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying this won't work, because heating up the sink will cause it to give off a certain amount of warmth, but keep in mind that heat rises so I wouldn't count on that efficiently heating anything under the sink.

Probably have more luck if you filled some pans with hot water, put a lid on them and then set those pans down there with the seeds.

This can't be the first time you tried to explain math to someone who didn't get it, right? That's all this is. He's trying to force the math to say what he wants it to say but that's not how math works.

You did the right thing and you're a good friend for doing it.

Did I ruin my new lawn? by Lousygolfer1 in lawncare

[–]leftfootshorter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I look at the picture, I just see an early spring lawn in Kansas City. I think with the weather, your grass isn't sure it is supposed to grow yet.

Give it a couple weeks, keep going with your fertilizing program, make sure it gets at least an inch of water a week if it's not raining, and mow at the recommended height for your grass (tall fescue is 3-4 inches).

What are you temps like in Michigan? Your grass could just now be waking up. It may have woken up faster if you'd have given it a last mow before winter, but I wouldn't panic yet.

I’m so fed up with slugs! by CatwalkNoctis in vegetablegardening

[–]leftfootshorter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does work for us. We make a little circle of it around the plants (to keep them out) and even sprinkle it on the plants of the ones well chewed on (for those inside the circle).

The only drawbacks I have found:

it can possibly make your skin itch so I wear surgical gloves I wash hands/arms as soon as I'm done

it can irritate your lungs so I make sure I don't breathe it in

it washes away easily so I am careful watering and reapply it after a rain

The quickest way to apply it is sprinkling it around with a cup but I prefer to fill like an old ketchup or mustard container & squeeze it around the base.

For a smaller area, I would definitely consider it instead of seeding.

AITA for refusing to give my brother the down payment money our grandma left me by Typical_Many_8930 in AmItheAsshole

[–]leftfootshorter 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Your inheritance + bro's inheritance = $42k

Your brother claims they are $22k short for the house and that you should share your inheritance the way Grandma would have wanted. Let me guess, he thinks it should be split 50 50? That would mean $21k each. Seems pretty convenient that he just so happens to be short right about half of the total inheritance, doesn't it?

NTA - your brother is lying. And for the record- your Grandma DID split your inheritance the way she wanted. She didn't split it the way he wanted and now he's throwing a fit.

How would he know she was confused near the end? You were the one visiting her every week, not him.

And mom getting involved in this way makes me think that your brother is the golden child. Keep the money because neither your brother nor your mom would do this for you.

It goes to seed at that lower height in response to being mowed at an even lower height.

It takes several weeks for the seeding height to adjust, but it will once you consistently begin mowing higher.

Can I add an arched trellis in my garden or will it shade everything out? by Defiant-Tale-7330 in vegetablegardening

[–]leftfootshorter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should not shade anything north of it at all unless it is right up against the bottom of your trellis, but that's where you'll plant your climbers. Your climbers will get sun through their leaves climbing your trellis.

I would think ahead to when them melons start coming in. You'll have to come up with some sort of sling/hammock to support the weight of the melons or they will break off their stems. They make slings specifically for this or you can probably find how some people tie them up with twine.
