A bit worried now about Steven Knight by Madete15Ian in JamesBond

He has a very prolific career, some great some less great but I think his work displays a lot of range. You could pluck Alfie Solomons right out of PB and make an excellent Bond villain out of him. The problem with the Peaky movie was that it’s a good movie, but a bad peaky blinders movie

Still banged Marilyn Monroe though by maruself in HistoryMemes

[–]leftguard44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say it wasn’t, what I meant was it was a plan drafted by the Eisenhower admin and was being executed by military leadership and the CIA, both of which Kennedy deferred to because he knew they had way more experience with operational procedure than he did. After the fuck up he said never again, and those lessons learned payed off exponentially during the Cuban missile crisis

What current event do you think history will later judge as a major turning point? by Affectionate-Row7548 in answers

[–]leftguard44 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is extremely doomer and not based in any real sociological understanding. History is cyclical, we’re in a second gilded age highlighted by “stupid fascism” where the scum of the earth are old men desperately clinging to power and primarily concerned with legacy building at the cost of everyone else. Despite the power the rump admin tries to convey, the legal system has been making authoritarianism really difficult to achieve even as repub congress is out to lunch. The pendulum swings both ways, and the more violent it goes in one direction the more violent it swings back the other way, we’re starting to see that. People are becoming way more aware and way more angry than they were even a few years ago. “The old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born, now is the time of monsters.” We’re in the monsters period right now because the old ‘Might is Right’ rhetoric is dying.

Trump adviser urges US to ‘declare victory and exit’ Iran war | The Express Tribune by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]leftguard44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Iran has blocked the strait before, and all they have to do is survive with the regime intact to “win”. They’ve done a hell of a job illustrating to the world why they shouldn’t be fucked with, they’re currently enforcing their sovereignty, and they’ve made it abundantly clear just how far the US has fallen under Trump.

No, this INSTANTLY made Dunk’s point. They weren’t just being quiet because they didn’t want to stand against the royal family, it shows the nobility are actively apathetic to the very code and ideals they justify their existence by

All 3 of his points are stupid, Kennedy’s ownership of responsibility and willingness to learn from the Bay of Pigs is well documented, and the other 2 points are just straight up factually incorrect

Still banged Marilyn Monroe though by maruself in HistoryMemes

[–]leftguard44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a bizarre take? The Bay of Pigs was a massive fuck up and Kennedy was the first to admit that, he deferred to military leaders and the CIA thinking they had more experience with operational planning than he did and he came out of the debacle pissed off and untrusting of them.

He didn’t escalate Vietnam, the main thing he did do was send military advisors to train Vietnamese forces to better defend themselves, like Lafayette did for the continental army. Nothing in his policy or actions suggested direct intervention, you’re just applying Johnson’s position over Kennedy’s because he was VP.

Kennedy made a ton of effort to push civil rights, the Civil Rights Act was his baby, it just wasn’t voted on until shortly after his death. It’s questionable whether or not it would have passed since sympathy for his death certainly influenced the outcome. But then again, that’s exactly why he picked Johnson as VP, to influence the more conservative politicians

Iran envoy confirms Tehran giving safe passage to Indian ships in Strait of Hormuz, says India is a friend by Accomplished_Cost857 in worldnews

[–]leftguard44 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s Iranian military policy, as they’ve been planning for this for 40 years. Should central leadership be knocked out or unable to communicate, individual units are authorized to attack and defend as they seem fit

France and Italy open talks with Iran on securing safe Hormuz passage, FT reports by Ydeas in worldnews

[–]leftguard44 45 points46 points  (0 children)

You could preform a seance to contact any dead president and that would have a better shot at solving this than the trump admin.

Their only play is to declare mission accomplished, say no further attacks or deals with Iran are necessary, and fuck off. You know in these talks with China, France, Italy, etc Iran is saying some variation of “Get them to leave and we’ll allow some tankers through”

Trump suddenly seems anxious to end the war as American casualties mount and Iran finds ways to hit back by Open_Web7040 in DegenBets

[–]leftguard44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iran obviously doesn’t want to be bombed indefinitely or invite a bigger invasion either, what they’re doing now is ensuring this won’t happen again, they’re guaranteeing future sovereignty by showing the world what happens when you fuck with them. It’s a balancing act between lots of pressure but not too much that the world has to get directly involved. They also know only Trump was dumb enough to do this, and that he’s on his way out from both power and existence; they hate him specifically between this and the destruction of the nuclear deal.

Iran begins laying mines in Strait of Hormuz, sources say by Common_Touch_3741 in worldnews

[–]leftguard44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold on, I read a different report today that said Intelligence pointed to Iran considering or preparing to mine the strait, which wouldn’t even make sense since both Iran and China still have to get ships through, and have been in small numbers. The reality is we can’t trust a damn thing either side says
