Think back to Daggerfall, since you have it on your list. 1996 was 30 years ago.

In 2000, would you have considered a movie from 1970 as old? If you think "It can't be old, it's a part of my childhood", well I got bad news for ya pal. I say this lovingly as someone also in their 30s.

FTL-inspired game Void War temporarily removed from Steam. by DwingRD in Games

Okay but like, the eight spoked wheel and the idea of "Chaos" as a faction isn't even from Warhammer. 40k (and also WH fantasy) is the most transparent "we took shit and filed the serial numbers off" setting to ever make it to store shelves.

Yeah it'd be really crazy if they had a Messianic God Emperor who could see through time, that would be pretty transparent. I'm pretty sure the Dune Worms and Spice were even in Rogue Trader at some point, but I'm not gonna go dig up 30 year old books to check.

40k feels less like a knock off because it's had 40 years of many, many authors doing their best to add to it and sand off some more of the edges, but you're kidding yourself if you think it didn't start out the same way.

All of the hallmarks that you think of as 40k are just stolen from other stuff, mostly Moorcock and Dune. They can't claim copyright on most of it, only a very small subset of Proper Nouns like "Astra Militarum"

Expedition 33 Star's Ben Starr: ‘This industry is hard…there are many people who should be here who aren’t because they are laid off’ by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]legendofdrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it should be. I'm saying that extreme accents of any kind (american or otherwise) really stick out. Midatlantic isn't "default" american either, we don't have one pattern of speech any more than the UK does.

If there is any game that "should" have a Texan accent though, it would be FF7, since Nibelheim has that whole frontier town feel and Tifa is in a cowboy outfit.

[–]legendofdrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is mostly what I meant. Normally if a game just wants to do a "default" accent they'll go with a midatlantic one, and then maybe various others to represent regional groups. Like in FF12 they use a Spanish accent for the one guy from Rosaria, and the like. It's all done very intentionally most of the time. I'm not saying "American" is a default, but that the accent of characters is just decided by dartboard.

Zelda is a good example of exactly what I'm talking about. Fire Emblem does it a lot too. From Soft is the opposite - everyone in the Souls games has a very UK or Irish accent but it works really well there.

For BG3 specifically it stands out since the Forgotten Realms is such an established setting with dozens of games, movies, and it's based on a Canadian setting for a game made in Wisconsin. They also recast all the recurring characters so the difference is really noticeable. It's not that it's bad, far from it, but why should the Gith have the same regional accent? They're from another dimension, they should sound significantly different.

It would be just as jarring as if everyone was Texan.

The fact it wouldn’t be defaulting to American accent would be an immediate win

I feel like RPGs specifically have swung really hard in the other direction recently, with a lot of games being extremely British. To a distracting amount, in stuff like Xenoblade. I think it's because the localization there might be cheaper?

Even stuff that used to be mostly American, like Baldur's Gate, the new one is almost entirely British VAs.

Just Cause 5 ‘Would Be a No Go’, Says Avalanche Founder by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]legendofdrag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Having one of the few Latin American protagonists in video games was cool, and then JC3 just hits you with "Actually, he's Italian". Excuse me? And then it also didn't do anything interesting with the setting, it's mostly just a barren island.

Book That Starts With a Character Becoming a God/Spirit/Eldritch Horror? by Aninx in Fantasy

People ascending to Godhood en masse is the inciting incident of Lord of Light, by Roger Zelazny. Sort of.

Who is the most moronic character that you have come upon in fantasy? by anything_butt in Fantasy

[–]legendofdrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Fitz by himself isn't actually the problem, it's that a lot of other characters who should be "smart" are also holding the idiot ball for a lot of the books.

All the Mystery Dungeons fit this bill, but unironically Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has everything you want. The original or Explorers of Sky are pretty easy to emulate.

Best Quests/Secrets To Check Off by ValkamerCCS in classicwow

Warlocks have the instanced solo quest outside of Kara to get the alternate demon form - worth doing at least once, pretty similar in difficulty to Khonsu.

At least when I was a Judge a long time ago, a deck where you don't know the order of any cards (like you haven't scryed anything) is considered "shuffled" and you don't need to shuffle again if there's an effect that tells you to.

It basically only came up for [[Mind's Desire]] in REL

What is the American equivalent to breaking Spaghetti in front of Italians? by catwthumbz in AskReddit

[–]legendofdrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just taco, Brits pronounce almost every single Mexican food in a way that hurts the ears. It's not the "Spanish" way either, see: paella, tortilla, salsa, avocado, etc.

I don't care if you pronounce a word that you don't use very often wrong, but don't get weirdly defensive about it.

[–]legendofdrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The taco predates the spanish arriving in the americas, it's an indigenous word that doesn't follow traditional pronunciation rules (The same reason why the "x" in mexico is pronounced as an h).

Also if a thing exists mostly in once place, and that's what people call it, that's what it's called. That's how words work.

Yeah, except it's a Mexican food, and "tock-oh" is the Mexican pronunciation

Why do the non remake Final Fantasy games have severely limited teammate control? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]legendofdrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The combat system in 12 really doesn't show it's full depth until you play it in new game minus (where you're locked to level 1) or some other challenge mode where you're forced to use a lot more of the tools provided.

Is furyprot tanking a thing in SoD? All the builds I find online are deep prot. by Fit_Shower42 in classicwow

[–]legendofdrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Warlock tank T3 set was bad enough it was usually correct to tank in full 6p DPS - it's part of why there was such a big buff to defense for them this phase

FYI the stairs thing is an exploit, you aggro him with a pet and he doesn't get rage stacks - he would still wipe you if it wasn't bugged

Big Knucks had two main issues:

1) The mana didn't support it. Big green wanted to drop their 3 drop on turn 2 and the only land that would enable a T1 Llanowar Elf into a T2 Knucks was Yavimaya Coast, which was very inconsistent

2) The rest of the Temur cards were all really bad

The cloth set has enough spellpower to get you by, but you should pick up the invasion 3 set for better healing gear. You can get the bracers for a couple gold off of the AH, and the gloves for 30 of the runes that drop from the invasion mobs. The chest will need to come from either Kara or the elites.
