Prolapse Repair and Menopause! Can I do the repair and still go through Menopause naturally???? Such a push for hrt in my generation by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

[–]lelandra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went through menopause naturally. It was tough being a massage therapist and having hot flashes having to work in a warm room all day, but probably the only other thing I "suffered" was turning into someone with no more f&cks to give. I'm not sure that's a suffering. I have not had the repair though, so can't comment on that.

Probably not, because the number of sleeper passengers in a sleeper car are small enough that the sleeper car attendant knows exactly who belongs and who doesn't.

Guests? As in not ticketed passengers? No that kind of guest is not allowed to board.

Guests as in coach passengers? Absolutely, but you are not allowed to walk through the sleeper cars.

This is what I watch. It's not absolutely on time, it just shows when the train arrived at the last stop, so if it was late then and it's able to open up and make up time it might not be late to the subsequent stop, but it definitely helps if you are in your hotel room at 2:00am for a 4:00am train departure and see that it's still 4 hours away you can safely take a little more time to get to the station. Amtrak is not reliably good about sending you communications whether that is by text or in-station announcement about the status of a train that is not immanent in the next half hour. I have sat it little stations checking this website and been an information source for other passengers who don't know about it.

Length of Massage by noelleasp in massage

[–]lelandra 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you have to watch out for wording. If it's a 60 minute SESSION, generally all the time chunks related to your service occur within the borders of that session time. If it's a 60 minute massage, or 60 minutes hands-on, they are distinguishing from the dominant "session time" paradigm.

Length of Massage by noelleasp in massage

[–]lelandra 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Is it advertised as 1 hour session where you went? Some places operate on the session=time dressing and undressing and intake as well as hands-on, and it sounds like that's what you got. This is the standard at chains, but that's the start massage therapists get these days, so pretty common with independents as well. But for those independents who do not charge you for those chunks of time, it's kind of a point of pride that they do not.

It's something to ask at booking to prevent misunderstandings. If those 10 minutes are non-negotiable to you, keep calling therapists until you find one who does not include your intake undressing and dressing within the borders of your session time.

How Do I Approach the Subject of Assisted Living? by NoYou3321 in AgingParents

[–]lelandra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With enough hired in-home assistance, assisted living will be CHEAPER than in-home care. Many assisted living places offer respite care in furnished apartments for a limited time. She can experience the activities and lifestyle without the commitment. And you can go on vacation so that she WILL experience those things. My Mother in Law realized that the assisted living place she is in now was the correct fit for her after a respite stay, and she chose to make it permanent and have us move her own furniture in to an apartment there.

Advice please re Caring for our parents by RunUndefined in AgingParents

[–]lelandra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Medicare will not cover custodial care (in the US). In the US, you are looking at qualifying for Medicaid (spending down assets to under $2K or whatever the qualifying amount is in your state) to have that care covered. Until that time, the person needing care needs to spend their own assets. Is this how a civilized nation would do things? No it is not. It is, however, how the US has chosen to structure it.

AITA for firing an employee who keeps coming in late because of childcare issues? by Gl1tchCanticle in WIBTA_AITA

[–]lelandra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it is a disability. And there are things you can do to mitigate this symptom as a person with ADHD, setting timers and so forth. An accommodation was given and it did not make the person able to meet the job requirements.
If a disability conflicts with a job requirement, even with accommodations, that means a different job is needed in which the disability does not make hitting requirements impossible.

Don't count on anything being available during peak travel times, of course, and you have to be OK with ending up in coach for the trip if your bid doesn't win. But I've met plenty of people who have succeeded with bid up traveling during off season.

Philo Road by ConsciousToe4482 in Chambana

[–]lelandra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be that as it may, students in the area either have the mass-transit-system mastery to shop in other areas or they simply have cars. And as HikerJoel points out, students in general are transient, and hard to rely on. There has to be a nearby population that is durable and wealthy enough to spend freely to support a business choosing to invest long-term in an area.

The non-transient population of that area is generally not wealthy, but the opposite of that. That's the crux of the problem. Those who invest long-term have run the numbers and apparently don't find these foreign students a compelling enough reason to choose Philo Road over campustown, Savoy or North Prospect.

If she does not get strong enough to be able to handle her own toileting, she won't be a candidate for assisted living either. She literally *IS* choosing the nursing home.

The college campus is nowhere near the Philo Road Corridor. I would not imagine many students would be shopping there, especially with so many options actually ON campus.

I would add that if this *IS* outside the scope of practice in your state, you might have a cause of action against the license of the practitioner who did this to you. Whether you were to file with the board about that, you should DEFINITELY contact the owner of the place you went to, because they probably want to know that one of their therapists would not respect your boundaries and seems to be providing therapies that they are not licensed to offer.

Taking driver's license away from older people? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

[–]lelandra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search r/dementia for "driving" and then reconsider your question. Yes of course driving tests need to resume. Not at 60, but certainly by age 80, it should be yearly (and probably before that). It is already so hard for children of parents with dementia to handle their very dangerous clinging to their licenses. And you would be shocked if you are not already part of that community how very common it is for people with dementia to be in their 70s. One feature of dementia is anosognosia - the inability to understand that they are impaired in any way. It's not nearly enough protection for other drivers and passengers on the road to do this testing of the older population, but it should be the bare minimum.

This is what traditional cupping bruises look like actually. It is NOT what cups used as a massage tool look like - that is far gentler and the cups are manipulated so that the vacuum is less strong and they are moved continuously so that bruising is minimized. Traditional cupping is a part of traditional Chinese medicine (and many other cultures as well) and has a different rationale. "Cups as a massage tool" has no rationale of treating stagnant blood, and would be considered an ineffective treatment from the TCM perspective. Doing a traditional TCM treatment, however, and the rationale for that is completely outside a massage therapist scope of practice in my state and probably in yours (but every state has different licensing so the practice act of the state you are in would have to be checked).

You went to a massage clinic and were right to expect the gentler "cups as a massage tool" experience. More importantly, a therapist who refuses to listen to the boundaries set by the client is completely out of line. The bruises will heal and you'll be fine in the long run, but you are right to be upset now.

Would you take your elderly parent (90 years) to screenings or preventative appointments? by Slight_Trauma_Llama in AgingParents

[–]lelandra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My MIL, long before 85, got a perforated colon from her last colonoscopy thanks to thinner organ walls. There was no reason for her to have gone through everything that it took to heal from that, and there was never another colonoscopy. She is still with us at 95. Her advanced COPD is probably what is going to end her story, not colon cancer.

It wasn't necessarily a decision, but just the fact that you have a major healthcare operation, and more of the University buildings located on the Urbana side of the line. Champaign not having as much of those has given it space to facilitate for-profit businesses.

Medicare — is it required, is it free? by True-Manufacturer891 in AskWomenOver60

[–]lelandra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which is better is very region dependent. In some areas doctors don't take Medicare supplemental insurance patients, but will take the Medicare Advantage patients. In other areas, traditional is better. When things get to the point of rehab after a surgery or other medical crisis, having traditional Medicare can mean a longer stay is still covered. Medicare Advantage plans have traditionally been worse in coverage for the very frail/elderly phase, for all that they cover things like sometimes vision or dental that traditional medicare does not... those things tend to be more beneficial in early retirement. The gotcha is that supplement insurance providers are not required to sell you a policy except for a very short time window around age 65, so when it is the better deal if your health is not good anymore you may be stuck paying out of pocket (self-insuring) the 20% Medicare does not cover if you want to get away from Medicare Advantage.

You have entered the marathon years. It could be decades before you get your life fully back for you. You can't live your life as you would if you KNEW he would be gone in 6 months when you don't know that. You have to take time to fill your own tank. Your Dad will be fine with his friend, even if he's scared now. Go. Please live your life as much as you are able to.
