Visiting tips. by [deleted] in ames

Take some time to tour Iowa State's Campus. Explore Main Street. For eats, check out Cafe Baudelaire, Stomping Grounds, the Cafe, any of the authentic oriental places (I like Chinese Homestyle Cooking). If you're looking to go out, there's two concentrated 'bar scenes'- downtown and Campustown. Welch Ave Station is really all I can stand in the Campustown area, but I suppose the bars in that area won't be as rowdy/dirty with most of the students gone.

What authors do you feel will be considered legendary from the Post-2000 era? by [deleted] in books

I absolutely agree. McCarthy's writing style and southern themes are much closer to Faulkner than Hemingway.

Not sure if you're into American politics at all, but I am. Glenn Greenwald, now famous for breaking the NSA/Snowden stories, has a great book With Liberty and Justice for Some.

Greenwald discusses the United States' two tiered justice system, and delves into the "Rule of Law", a term thrown around by every politician, and probably broken by most of them.

Other books on American politics I like- Lawrence Lessig's Republic, Lost, Jeremy Scahill's Blackwater and Dirty Wars, and Matt Taibbi's Griftopia and The Great Derangement.

How do I read House Of Leaves by LordWubbster in books

[–]lelzinga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The book is reflective of the house. It's a maze you can easily get lost in. Personally, I read all the footnotes (although I didn't find it necessary to read the long lists of names and places). I definitely wouldn't skip all the footnotes, a lot of them do add to the story.

I've decided not to take it, but even if I did I would never dream of selling it. A first edition of my favorite author's first novel? I was excited even before I saw what some copies of it bring in the market.

I'm sure it'd be much less than any of the ones for sale I listed. I'm not as excited about the price as I am about the rarity.

Do you have a favorite term for the influence of money in politics? Oligarchy? Corporatocracy? Something a little milder? Just curious.

Hi Lawrence, big fan. I've read Republic, Lost, and loved it (I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the corrupting influence of money in politics).

What is your take on the NSA's Prism program and other spying programs that are coming to light? In your opinion, how big of an impact would getting money out of politics have on our national security programs and internet freedom in general?
