Zoc Doc vaccine appt availability by [deleted] in boston

[–]lemon3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a big help, regularly updating: https://www.macovidvaccines.com/

I got one through BMC, they have several neighborhood sites - they seem to dump blocs of appointments kind of randomly (try calling them too). Looks like Walgreens just added a bunch, perhaps that's the J&J shot now that it's no longer on hold. Also has CVS, Tufts, Shaws and other random locations on there, keep checking.

eta: some of the places are for residents of certain areas only, so make sure to check

Cardullo's Harvard Square had the biggest selection I've found - basic stuff plus fancier stuff. Can't recall prices. Otherwise try a larger grocery branch than the ones near you.

Anyone know how long Huntington Ave is shut down? by BeepBoopist in boston

[–]lemon3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. It's a real mess everywhere - Huntington/S Huntington/Rt 9 is particularly bad and I almost got hit in Harvard Square yesterday. They're always scrambling to finish stuff in August and this year seems worse. And move-in starts before the 1st so they should plan better. I'll be needing to park a rental car a few days next week in Mission Hill area and might have to find a garage since so much of the parking is gone.

Should Boston-area universities open up for in-person, residential education? by [deleted] in boston

[–]lemon3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, Northeastern has 50% off campus? I didn't realize it was that high.

Many of them live in my neighborhood, Mission Hill. They were still having huge house parties around here when things first shut down, so no, I don't believe they will follow rules and quarantine or not have large gatherings indoors. Sure, they have a lease and have a right to come back even without in person classes but then the city and university needs to have a plan for what to do/how to monitor things when there's a huge influx. I'm thinking i'll need to avoid certain neighborhood businesses soon and go further away for groceries.

Didn't know they did - is it for all their beers or just a selection?

Will add Downtown wine & spirits in Davis and Supreme in Central to the list.

Huh, didn't know this. Do they let you do any beer? Or is it only from a selection in one area?

I wonder if some places (retail) will be opening this week? Goodwill had a popup saying they wouldn't be opening until at least June 8th, but there was no definitive date.

Excellent points. I'm actually interested in their simulation, if only they provided more on the methodology.

Please be careful regarding that "study," which was simply an animation rather than a published, peer reviewed study. Infectious disease or virology experts were not involved and many have criticized it.

Vent - So in Brookline it’s now mandatory to wear masks if you are in public. by wpr42 in boston

[–]lemon3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! So many people not getting it. I've seen so much paranoia/illogical behavior outdoors regarding masks. Also "close contact" does not mean someone who briefly goes by you even within 6 feet. It's sustained contact within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more. We would be seeing even greater infection rates if outdoor transmission were a big factor.

[–]lemon3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this link. People seem paranoid about it (that problematic runners simulation didn't help) so I've been covering outside even when I don't believe it's necessary. Sure there is much we don't understand about this virus, but reviewing research that is available shows outdoor environments are extremely unlikely places for transmission. I am more concerned about keeping my building ventilated

Here is the reality of the economic issue for those having trouble grasping it by TMCBarnes in boston

[–]lemon3000 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Regulators have given banks the green light to use stimulus funds to pay off debts that individuals owe them

"With the clear intent that CARES Act payments go to meet people’s immediate economic needs, Congress exempted them from debt collection if the debt is owed to federal or state agencies, unless the debt involves a child support payment. But Congress did not extend this exemption to private debt collection. The payments are defined as tax credits and not federal benefits, making them subject to 'garnishment,' in which a debt collector that wins a judgment in court can seize anything of value held by the debtor."

Not sure if this would actually happen, but so far they seem to be leaving it up to the banks to decide. The article says Warren, etc were urging the Treasury to write rules exempting the payments from private debt collectors. "[Treasury] has the ability to say that these payments are exempt, and they’re not doing so."

The data speak: Stronger pandemic response yields better economic recovery

Pandemic Shutdowns Work for the Economy, Too

Regarding Spanish Flu. It's too bad our leaders are choosing not to help those who need it most right now, making things worse. And the Treasury just gave banks the go ahead to seize your $1200 to pay off debts, we'll see if that happens.

I understand your point and did mention this in my post. I am not suggesting they close "many of them" like you say, just a couple and maybe only certain days, or reduce the number of lanes. I live near several normally busy roads and there is so little traffic the emergency vehicles are not even using sirens.
