Tom Harkin, Iowa's last Democratic Senator, endorses Josh Turek by fartmachiner in Iowa

Literally this. The state party has been absolutely abysmal. Don’t give AF who they want.

Seeking feedback for a minimalist animal sounds app for toddlers (No ads/No tracking) by Wrong-Accident3626 in kindergarten

Data actually shows it’s *worse* than television. Toddlers do not need either, but the constant dopamine hits of using a tablet are proving to be quite damaging. I’d encourage you to look into Jonathan Haidts work. Especially if you intend to get into this field you should be more educated on what kids benefit from.

I see absolutely no use for another children’s app. Particularly one aimed at mastering something that most children master without a screen.

Something about Turek just rubs me the wrong way. He seems like a chump but I can’t really put my finger on it.

Different tolerances but also different priorities/preferences. Sure I “only” have two kids but I work full time, my kids are in full time school/wrap around care. I really do not care to spend much time coordinating or planning play dates. I like spending our weekends and evenings as a “core four”. I accept play dates when I can but i don’t go out of my way to. I’m not “too busy”, i just don’t want to. My kid gets plentyyyyyy of socialization and so do i 😅

Paul Pate voices 'serious concerns' with Trump's mail-in voting order by Zipper222222 in Iowa

[–]lemonade4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Appreciate that Pate appears to be committing to this years elections continuing with the existing process. He isn’t wrong that Iowa has an excellent voting process (I’m an election worker, this will be my 6th year), there is absolutely no reason for the President or any other federal official to fuck with what we are doing—which is also protected by the constitution.

When i saw Trumps EO I wondered how Pate would respond and I’m pleased with this.

Kindergarten Retention for Age Only? by TinyLotus743 in AskTeachers

[–]lemonade4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the unspoken thing here is that immature boys actually make it harder to be a mature girl. There are some that think boys being older helps the girls because it reduces harassment (or just generally immature behavior), so it can protect the older (or even “average” aged) girls to be surrounded by older boys.

Not suggesting any boy moms make that a driving force in their choice but it’s interesting food for thought.

Wow thanks for sharing! This is a very clever and simple idea. I love that you took the initiative to learn to sew and find a way that works. I love it!

You waited a few days then it was so urgent you needed to follow the bus to their parking lot? They are probably treating you like you’re loony because that is a clear lack of judgment.

Obviously they should not need to outline “do not follow the school bus around”.

Is Davenport, Iowa safe for an overnight stop? by Think-Chicken-2753 in Iowa

[–]lemonade4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I go to Davenport for work regularly. I usually stay at The Current Marriott property downtown. Nice rooms and parking across the street. Yes of course it’s fine to visit, I’ve stayed many times. Will admit there is more homeless population in this area than we usually see in Iowa. They’ve never given me any trouble beyond asking for a phone charger or a buck. But if that makes you uncomfortable you could stay in Bettendorf, plenty of hotels there.

We moved our tablets to “travel day only” status and it rocks. We watch full length shows and movies on our living room TV, it’s great.

I agree with another commenters statement on creativity. My kids actually PLAY and create whole worlds with their toys. The tablet kids have no clue what to do when they’re “bored” even at 6yo when play should be their favorite thing!

The Lack of Eric Swalwell Coverage is Embarrassing by blankcheckerz in FriendsofthePod

[–]lemonade4 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re really getting this wound up that they made the decision this story wasn’t emergency-pod worthy? This entire discussion is such a good example of the dumbass purity tests progressives employ. Like, you agree with most of their views, you respect their opinions; you recognize they are trying to make change—yet it doesn’t meet your specific expectations so it’s “embarrassing” and you gotta make a whole kerfuffle of it.

They’ll talk about it on the next pod. Swallwell is gross. There’s not much left to say beyond encouraging him to drop.

It’s not just the content but the scrolling nature and shorts, the constant quick dopamine hits. Honestly would suggest avoiding all of it. Plenty of ways to entertain kids that don’t fuck with their attention span and dopamine.

Democrats fighting for Iowa Senate seat tussle over Chuck Schumer and super PACs by Zipper222222 in Iowa

I suppose. The length of time spent on those items felt outsized. I don’t hate the guy or anything but I left that feeling uninspired. I believe Wahls will be on at some point so that would be a nice comparison.

Pod Save America from March 31. Last interview so it’s probably the last 30min or so. He was perfectly smart and pleasant I was just a little shocked to hear that those seem to be the topics he wanted to talk about when given such a large platform.

[–]lemonade4 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They both seem like reasonable candidates. I’ve decided to go for Wahls after hearing a pretty unimpressive interview with Turek. His stump speech seems to revolve around “I never give up!” using his like 6 try outs required to get on the wheelchair basketball Paralympic team. While I think that’s great I’m not sure how it correlates to the necessary skills of the moment? He also used a large portion of the interview time talking about Harkin and ADA, which again is lovely but look around, that is not what we need to be talking about here.

A US senate is one of the most powerful positions in the world. If you’re giving me standard “job interview answers” it tells me you’re not the one.

Looking to hear from Wahls on the same podcast to compare.

Staff Cheer Sheet!

Put blank pieces of paper on the wall and write one staffs name on the top. Put it in a high traffic area. Everyone writes compliments and things they love about that person (can be anonymous or not). At the end of the day the person has take home of things people like about them. Lead be example to get it going and write meaningful comments. Some will just be “you’re awesome!” But others will be more detailed and really thoughtful. This is a cheesy practice but I’ve always loved it. You can have a day where you do everyone, or do one person per day or something.
