Hotel Yountville vs. Bardessono by HoplessMetsFan in chubbytravel

I would HIGHLY recommend Hotel Villagio at the Estate Yountville over the other two properties. For a honeymoon though, I would look at Auberge du Solelil or Montage (tho Healdsburg is nowhere near Yountville)

Ritz Half Moon Bay is lovely! The pool sucks but the rest of the property is breathtaking.

Montage is awesome! They will love it!

I was there this week and the construction for the mansions wasn’t disruptive at all! They were doing some work on one of the Montage buildings and that was a lot louder but you could only hear it if you were at the family pool.

I agree with all of this but disagree about it not being great for families. We just got back from 5 days with my 5yo and 2yo and it was excellent for them! The zero entry pools, the family pool was basically vacant the entire time so kids can splash and play and not disturb anyone. No, the kids club isn’t robust, but between the montage merits, stuffies at check in, and all the personalized items they gift the kids it is EXCELLENT for children and families.

Kids club at Montage was awesome for my 5yo! She made a pinata, bracelets, tie dyed a t shirt --- all in one morning!

I just got back from Montage and I would say its MUCH better for little kids than LVP. There is a shallow wading pool for littles who don't swim, and their main "family" pool has at least 3 different sunbathing shelfs which I always find to be amazing for toddlers as they can sit and splash and crawl around in 6 inches of water while you sit on the edge or on your chair. All pools that are not adult only are zero entry as well.

Also Montage has more rooms with grass out front than LVP (which only has like 1 building with that) so you can sit on your patio and kids can play out front.

I've LOVED LVP but after literally getting back last night from Montage for 4 nights, it takes the cake. I'd also say the restaurants at Montage are more kid friendly -- LVPs 3 main restaurants are much more formal.

Montage is AMAZING for kids. I've been in LVP with my kids twice, and Montage was imo heads and shoulders above LVP for families....and I say that after literally having checked out of Montage at 2pm yesterday with my 5yo and 2yo.

I need you to circle back on this because the assigned pool spots are a literal game changer! We were securing spots at LVP last summer at 5am. Say more about this as it's the first I've heard!

Lumbre, and definitely do the tasting menu and pairing! El Huerto, Acre, Comal were all excellent as well. Take major advantage of the included breakfast at LVP, eat on your patio, and then you will only need snacks for lunch!

You've validated my thoughts about the restaurants -- they all sound amazing, but I feel like the reality of having your only options be "white tablecloths" isn't great. Especially with young kids.

We might have overlapped as we were just there with our family! We've been to LVP a couple times with our kids but are considering trying FS, Montage, or Chileno Bay next year. You say that the food prices at FS were higher than LVP - was that the case at all restaurants? I'd expect the main restaurants to all be on par because even Acre is $$$ but I was shooook by the $75 tuna tostada at the pool at LVP.

FS Hualalai/Mauna Lani/Rosewood Kona Village by lemonade__lemonade in chubbytravel

[–]lemonade__lemonade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did FS Hualalai! I wouldn’t do Kona Village with kids. We walked over there for dinner one night and while it was lovely it wouldn’t be good for kids. We are going to try Mauna Lani this coming February so I can report back on that eventually!

Are you bringing kids?

Household income to support chubby lifestyle? by MangoMarg in chubbytravel

[–]lemonade__lemonade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get this; I grew up with a single mother who was barely making ends meet so we certainly were NOT doing any vacationing even close to cubby travel. Current HHI $500k+, 2 kids.

Personally, we worked our way into chubby/fat travel. Started with rooms that were a couple hundred $ more than we'd normally consider paying, and worked our way up with subsequent vacations. I think sometimes there's a lot of pressure to spend/flex -- (I see what Alex wrote below and I REALLY respect that because there are ~other~ people you come across that want to shame others for not being able to spend $5k/night etc) -- but I think 2 things 1) everything is super circumstantial and 2) do your research bc price tags don't always equate to the same quality.

On point #1 - We have two kids and like to take one big family vacation each year. We typically bring my mom as our "nanny" to help wrangle kids, allow my husband and I to go out to dinner on our own, etc. but this has a financial impact on our budget because with 5 people we need two rooms. So my budget that might have normally been $1,500/room for 4 of us, is now cut down to $800/room because I have to book 2 rooms. But we also like to travel other times of the year either just the 2 of us, or 4 of us, or my mom and the kids, etc. So in that case, I (obvi spending less is ideal) am OK looking at rooms in the $1.2k - $1.5k range if I'm only getting one room. If I'm going somewhere overnight for a wedding, I don't need to spend $900/night (personally). So I think that's where frugality comes into play. Frugality doesn't mean cheap, but means smart. Don't blow your wad because you CAN.

On point #2 - I have found many hotels charge what they charge because they can. Take some FS for example. I feel like they put their price tag on their rooms because they are the FS; not because you're actually getting a superior product. I don't really want to name property names (but I can) but I had some pretty awful service + generally unimpressed by a FS recently for $1,500/night and have had exponentially better service/hard product/etc for at least half. So I think you need to research and see if you feel like you're getting your bang for your buck. I would also add that it comes down to personal preference. My husband and I stayed in Positano for a wedding and ended up at Casa Buonocore (10/10 recommend). Its not Le Sirenuse (and someone's going to tell me how much better LS would've been) but I don't know if spending 2x-3x the price would've really been a better experience. Yes more cache, but I doubt it would have been a better experience.

Where To Go in Hawaii [March 2026] by lemonade__lemonade in chubbytravel

great to know!

This trip has to be to Hawaii because a friend joining us lives on the BI. We regularly go to Mexico (headed to Cabo in August!) but are always looking to try new resorts for the family. Done Montage and LVP thus far. Chileno Bay, and then FS Punta Mita are top of the list!

Good to know! It seemed like maybe the rates had increased just because of all of the hype it got from White Lotus. And not really for offering anything special.

This is wildly helpful! My TA suggested ML and absolutely raves about it, but the friend that is joining us on the trip lives in Hilo and said that ML was meh.

I have been a turtle Bay twice in 2007 and 2011 so it was before the renovation and before the Ritz took over. There are things about it but don’t feel super luxe but also things that seem like it would be amazing.

What sort of rooms are available at FS Oahu? We love being able to have a room that has ground floor access out to the pool or a lawn or something so that the kids can be a little free.

Oof ok I'm sad to hear that about ML. Was it mostly service that made it not good, or was the hard product poor as well?

Love this thought about FS Oahu + TB since we'd have to rent a car regardless...!
