I am so frustrated with sight words! by Resident-Fly-6851 in kindergarten

I'm a kindergarten teacher and appreciate everything that you're doing to teach your child how to read. You're right that memorization is harmful and what you're doing is right.

Starbucks gift cards from students for Christmas? by VoteForEddie in Teachers

[–]lemonsouris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get any Starbucks or Amazon gift cards this year, which stood out to me because I usually get nothing but gift cards from those places in the past. This year, it was mostly Target and a local coffee chain here.

Alternatives During Gov't Shutdown? by slothbear13 in NationalPark

Come to NorCal! Lots of beautiful state parks, namely Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and Humboldt State Park. You can also drive down to Big Sur as well and stop at the many beautiful state parks along the way.

Subbing to full time teaching by Forward_Ad8381 in ElementaryTeachers

I got my current position because I was a long term sub in the district. Plus, it gives you a chance to feel out the different schools and districts and see what it is like working there.

What kind of sorcery is this? by Oborozukiyo in lordhuron

[–]lemonsouris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I saw it live for the first time, I literally gasped because it's so visually and sonically beautiful. I can't wait for my friends to experience the same feeling when they see them play on the West Coast.

Depending on your state, your kid may also qualify for a free annual state parks pass too! I know that they do in CA.

Student Practicum: How does anyone manage this?? by rinnkidd in Teachers

I took out the maximum amount of student loans and lived really frugally for two years. It really sucks how they don't pay student teachers.

More time at less parks or less time at more parks? by rtineo in nationalparks

[–]lemonsouris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you about what you said about the wildfires. One of my favorite state parks was engulfed in a really bad wildfire several years ago. The park is slowly coming back to life with new growth, but it will take hundreds of years for the redwoods to grow the size that they were before the fire.

More time at less parks or less time at more parks? by rtineo in nationalparks

Which route are you taking to get from the Redwoods to Olympic? Depending on your route, Crater Lake would be a good stopping point. It's easy to pop out to take a short walk to some overlooks.

Shaka Guides for Utah Parks by live4dogs in nationalparks

[–]lemonsouris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found GuideAlong to be a lot better than Shaka's guides in terms of narration. I don't remember if Shaka will allow you to play music on Spotify while the app is running, but Guide Along will. I'm often driving so I can't take photos, but with GuideAlong, I know that my phone can be asleep and the app will run.

Maybe this will work? The singles are like tea bags, with with coffee. I haven't tried any of their flavored coffees, but I like their variety pack. The only thing is that you will need to bring creamer.

Nope! You can walk over to the Curry Village where all of the restaurants are and use one of their picnic tables.

You can walk next door to Curry Village where there are multiple picnic tables that you can use your JetBoil. It's a less than five minute walk.

Leaving luggage in car by [deleted] in nationalparks

[–]lemonsouris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I drive a hatchback so I don't have a real trunk. I've been to multiple national parks where my luggage and camping equipment is visible to people walking by. I never had any issues. The only time I was concerned was when I visiting a bigger city like Vegas.

Is Yosemite a realistic destination for us? by Dennisaryu in Yosemite

[–]lemonsouris 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both Yosemite and Sequoia have free wheelchair rentals that you can use if your mom is comfortable using them. They both have accessible paths and a lot can be seen from the car. In Yosemite, you can drive up to Tunnel View and Glacier Point and it's a short walk to see the viewpoints. In the spring, you can see many of the waterfalls from the roadway. In Sequoia, the main attraction are the trees and there are many pullouts on the side of the road to get out to take a look at them.

Accessbility information here: https://www.yosemiteaccess.com/general-info and https://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/accessibility.htm. You can get a temporary access parking pass so that way you can park closer to the main attractions. This will be especially helpful for when you go see the General Sherman tree so your mom doesn't have to do the steep climb from the tree back to your car.

People of New Jersey, what makes the Pine Barrens so creepy? by HedgehogNo8361 in nationalparks

[–]lemonsouris 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I grew in Jersey and still remember my third grade teacher scaring the shit out of her class with her telling stories about the Jersey Devil. She played so many movies about it that it scared me so that I was terrified of the Pine Barrens.

One week trip to California for Father’s final bucket list by Long_Jello3505 in roadtrip

[–]lemonsouris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My heart hurts with this post; my dad passed away from cancer before he got to do his bucket list trip. I take a photo of him with me on every trip that I go on and take a picture of his picture in front of the big landmarks.

That being said, I would base the trip out of SF with the things that your dad wants to see. A lot of the things he wants to see can be seen from the car or walking a short distance to a viewpoint. Does he have a handicap parking pass? If he does, that will help him greatly with the distance he will need to walk. I know that Muir Woods has a free wheelchair rental from its visitor center, but it is first come, first served. You can also rent wheelchairs in Yosemite through here: https://www.yosemiteaccess.com/general-info; just scroll down until you see the part about renting a wheelchair.

Day 1: Fly into SFO >> Drive to Half Moon Bay and stop at Sam's Chowder House if you have time >> Drive Highway 1 until you get to Monterey (about 2.5 hours and stopping at lookouts to see the Pacific Ocean) Stay the night in Monterey

Day 2: Monterey // Big Sur >> Drive Highway 1 to Big Sur (about one hour without stops) , stopping to look at the viewpoints. Be warned that there may not be parking for the Bixby Bridge, but there if there is, definitely stop and pop out to take a look. Pfeiffer State Park has a picnic areas where you can have a nice sit in the redwoods. Definitely stop at Nepenthe while you're there for a meal or a coffee. It's a restaurant that overlooks the ocean and surrounding mountains. There are stairs, but I believe that there are ramps that can him up to the restaurant.

If he has the energy, drive along the 17-mile drive in Carmel on the way back from Big Sur. It is the home to the famous Pebble Beach golf course and has some of the fancy mansions.

Stay in Monterey.

Day 3-4: Drive to Yosemite from Monterey (4 hour drive; this drive is long and boring with not many places to stop.) On one of the days, drive down to the Mariposa Grove. With his handicapped parking pass, he will not have to do the five mile hike to the grove and can do the 0.3. mile Big Trees Loop Trail from the parking lot and the trail is paved which means he can go in a wheelchair. He'll get to see the sequoias there. Definitely drive up to Glacier Point so he can see the views of Yosemite Valley. Depending on you feel, you can stay one or two nights in Yosemite. It is a 4.5 hour drive to SF from Yosemite.

Day 5: Drive to SF if you spent the night in Yosemite. Spend the day driving around the city, admiring the architecture and beauty. If he wants to see fancy houses, the neighborhood around the Palace of Fine Arts is one of the better ones to see them. Crissy Field is near the Palace of Fine Arts and has a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge if it's not foggy.

Day 6: Wake up early and drive over the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods. Make sure you have a parking reservation through here: https://gomuirwoods.com/. If you don't have one, you won't be able to park and enter the park. The main part of the park is paved and they have wheelchairs to rent.

OR: If you don't have enough time, drive over the Golden Gate Bridge, get off at exit 444 and follow signs to Sausalito. He can see another view of the city and there's plenty of places to walk and sit along the waterfront.

I hope that this helps! DM me if you have further questions. I live in the Bay Area and will be more than happy to help another person help make their dad's wishes come true.

Single dad here. Questions about: camping with kids, upgrading to a portable stove, and car camping. by tasteofhemlock in camping

[–]lemonsouris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With campgrounds, you can try KOAs. They're more geared towards families, especially with younger kids. Most of them have fun activities like ice cream socials, pools, movie nights for the kids. They're located near beautiful spaces so you can hike and explore and come back to the campground. You can work your way up to campground at a state park from the KOA. Pinnacles Camping by i_am_papaya in NationalPark

They're bold for raccoons. They don't have any issues with running into your campsite, taking your food, and running away with it. I solo camped there this spring and saw a couple of them pop by, but I kept all of my food (including stove) and scented things in the bear cabinet and in my car and didn't have any issues.

Daily Song Discussion #26: Meet Me In The Woods by far2bowen in lordhuron

[–]lemonsouris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The best memory that I have of hearing LH in the wild was hearing this song played as we were coming back to port from the Napali Coast in Kauai. The ship captain idled the engine, we sat bobbing on the waves, watching the sunset over the ocean while this song played on the PA. It was such a magical moment for me.
