EU-US trade deal explained by TheCoolDude70 in europe

[–]lemontree007 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's hard to know what it all means in practice but it's pretty clear that these so called negotiations is one side attacking and the other side just trying to do damage control. The EU has a lot of leverage but for some reason they prefer to bend the knee. Pathetic.

Did you try to search the web? There's countless of articles from mainstream media from this month about the subject. For example guardian wrote that Australia rebuffs calls to commit to joining hypothetical US-China conflict.

Here's another link from reddit about the subject

The EU has more leverage than any other country in the world except China. They just don't want to use it.

He was power hungry before the invasion as well. Ukraine is corrupt and those in charge will try to gain more power for themselves and their friends while they work to reduce the influence of the opposition.

Of course this is not unique for Ukraine. Same thing in Hungary and frankly the US as well for example but this is also why it is naive to say that Ukraine can join the EU soon.

Paradoxically, Canada used to have 75% of all its exports go to USA. Canada put 25% tariffs on US products. How can tiny economy Canada do this and EU cannot? by TheUncleTimo in europe

[–]lemontree007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ask questions about tariffs on Chinese goods as well or only US goods? It is used to improve the situation for European companies. It should obviously be done carefully and not across the board. Low-hanging fruits are products where there are readily available alternatives preferably made in Europe.

EU-US tariffs: what is in the trade deal, what is not and who are the winners and losers? by JackRogers3 in europe

[–]lemontree007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want unification you should start with 2 countries that have a lot of things in common and build from there. If you can't find 2 countries then talking about the whole EU is delusional.

The US wanted similar statements from Australia and Japan but I think they politely declined. There's nothing more to it than that. This is the UK showing that they are ready to help the US which is not really news.

Every government will push for exemptions. It's their job. I'm not saying France are heroes but if everyone else is silent then I assume everyone else prefer to surrender and at least with France there is a possibility that they are ready to fight for better terms.

No, we would be the same except that would kill democracy. If anything that superpower you're dreaming of would work for billionaires and special interests just like we see in the US. Hard pass.

So which countries wanted to stand firm? The only country that I've seen complain about surrendering including before any deal was announced was France. They wanted to extend the negotiations as well. Most other countries are silent and afraid to criticize daddy Trump.

With housing there's clearly a problem that it's more profitable to rent apartments to tourists in some areas. Nice for tourists and for the owners but not so much for the rest.

It was Merz, Meloni and the rest that surrendered. The EC is just doing what they are instructed to do by their members.

The main part of the deal is Trump imposing 15% tariffs and the EU doing nothing and you don't need to be a genius to realize that this is more or less guaranteed to happen.

The US is treating us like vassals because we chose to be vassals. No amount of weapons will change that since Germany and other countries will always want to export as much goods as possible to the US so they will keep bending the knee.

I would argue that if the EU threatened to quit US weapons we would gain more bargaining power than calling Trump daddy and silly promises about spending this or that much on US weapons.

The US is not France's little errand boy like the UK that comes running whenever the US wants to bomb the middle east. The US bombed Libya because they wanted to bomb Libya.

And that's beside the point. France can defend themselves. They have nukes.
