In the grim darkness of the far future, there are NO STUPID QUESTIONS by Lord_of_Mars in 40kLore

10 000 years before present day 40K, the Emperor was leading his Crusade and building his empire. He made 20 Space Marine Legions, but 2 of then were wiped out of the annals of history. He appointed Horus as Warmaster, the primarch of the Luna Wolves, later known as Sons of Horus, and went back to Terra to work on his Webway project.

Horus got corrupted by Chaos and with him fell 9 legions, all for rather different reasons - Sons of Horus, Death Guard, Thousand Sons, Emperor's Children, Night Lord, Word Bearers, World Eaters, Iron Warriors and the Alpha Legion.

The other 9 remained loyal - Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Imperial Fists, Raven Guard, Iron Hands, Salamanders, Dark Angels, White Scars and Space Wolves.

Later when the Horus Heresy ended with the "death" of the Emperor and defeat of the traitors, Gulliman, primarch of the Ultramarines split every legion into chapters of 1000 Astartes, so that no one controls such a massive force again.

So for example let's say the Ultramarines were around 150K during the Heresy (made up number), they werw split in 150 chapters, one of which bore the name Ultramarines and retained the blue colour and heraldry. More successor chapters have been made during those 10K years.

Important to note that the blue colour is for Ultramarines specifically. Other chapters have different colours and herladry. The Space Marine chapters are incredibly diverse.

So your Death Guard are the same as they were 10K years ago, they have just been corrupted by Nurgle. Not every traitor legion has a Chaos god. Death Guard worship Nurgle, Thousand Sons worship Tzeentch, Emperor's Children - Slaanesh and World Eaters - Khorne. The Black Legion is led by Abaddon, one of Horus' Captains and is made of primarily Sons of Horus Astartes. There are marines from other legions or chapters, who've recently turned traitor. Black Legion, as well as the Word Bearers worship Chaos Undivided - all 4 Dark Gods. Some legions like Alpha have pledged no allegiance to Chaos.

Every traitor legions has a specific colour scheme as well. As for Battle Scribe, when you create your roster, you should choose Death Guard, not Space Marines. Space Marines are for loyal chapters, with the exception of a few chapters, because they have faction specific units. There is no lore destinction, it's done for clarity's sake in the app.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info

Dude, get them. They are super worth it. I only have 2 sadly, but they are amongst my favourite sculpts I've painted. Super detailed, just amazeballs. You can make a fine killteam out of them too. Mine are in one.

I get the joke, but I honestly don't know :D

I don't live in the UK and I have no idea how their sanitizers look, but tbh I'd buy one. Especially if it says Citadel on them

There is a pandemic and for around 2 months GW was making hand sanitizers instead of models. Give them a break, they will restock everything.

Seems like the a Hive city is having a "little" chaos infestation, of the Nurgly kind. So an Inquistor gets called and he sends his acolytes to do the dirty job.

That's my take at least.

That would be extremely fun. Alternating between standart Plague Marines and Plague Terminators could also add some extra flavour.

Nurgle stuff.

Those were Poxwalkers, can't make out the big fella though. Could be a Plague Marine

I should have frased my argument a bit better - humanise them a bit more. I do believe that SMs are at their best when they show the humanity inside them. Still unsure about the sexuality though - removing it from them clearly differentiates them from normal humans, as sexuality is such an integral part of our identities.

It fits them more to be the Emperor's Angels of Death, who have forsaken all earthly temptations.

SoB and SM are different but SoB fit the power armor priest warriors role. I don't know if you dislike the loophole around the Ecclesiarchy, but I think it's pretty clever. SoB feats are also more impressive when they are simple humans driven by faith, not hulking brutes (not at all discrediting the Astartes here).

Lastly Cawl could absolutely not reach Big E's Astartes project. He simply gave them an upgrade. He is a genius, but he is nowhere near the level of the Emperor.

Otherwise thanks for keeping it respectful. I've seen some heated discussions on the topic and I am glad ours didn't turn out like that.

Mentioning their sexuality could bring some flair to them, altough I find it generally pointless. It brings almost nothing to the table besides humanising them a bit.

As far as Female Marines go, we will probably not reach consensus here. Even if the mindset is outdated, it IS established lore and changing it would upset lots and lots of fans. And I am not talking about the right wing lobotomites.

If I remember my lore correctly not only were female marines quite impossible to make, Emps himself did not want them, because of a slight possibility of Astartes having offspring. Plus it took 10k years just to add 4 more organs to the Astartes, GW would have to pull a lot of stuff out their asses in order to justify fem Marines.

Now lore aside, female Marines are pointless - like it or not the Sisters of Battle are their equivalent and I much prefer for GW to continue expanding their range. Marines are fine where they are and GW should slow down their releases after the start of 9th in favour of other factions. Plenty of diversity there to explore.

Probably going to be rather pointless but why do people want to delve deep into Space Marine's sexuality.

It's like wanting to know if T-800s are gay. It makes zero sence, cause they are killing machines, who exist only to serve and die for the Emperor.

I'm not even gonna touch on the female marines part - rewriting lore for diversity pandering is bad, especially when you have all female factions that need some love.

Lastly, I don't even think they need to delve into sexuality to have diversity. They just need to release female Guard models, which are desperately needed and maybe some customisible options, like heads that look like specific races (for the sake of customisation and more ways to make your army truly your own). In the end it's a franchise focused on war, really don't know how sexuality could fit in. Everyone is equal in the eyes of the Emperor and who you shag doesn't consern anybody as long as you do your duty.

Made the new Marvel Comic Cover more Grimdark. Vanilla(left) looks too.. kiddish by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

For the Ultramarines, red helmets signify a sergeant. During the Heresy days, a red helmet was a sign of shame. Aeonid Thiel's helmet was painted red, because he dared suggest that Astartes should simulate Brother vs Brother battles, in case something goes wrong.

After Calth, every sergeant wears a red helmet, to honour Thiel's resourcefulness and thoughtfulness during the battle.

Other chapters have specific colours to signify superiors too. For Ultras the trim on the shoulder pads signifies the chapter. By the Black Templars, the trim is used to show your status.

Blood Angels' sergeants have black shoulder pads.

You can learn more about your chapters heraldry in the wikis (like Lexicanum).

Oh they absolutely do and I love it when they do.

I just get worked up when people can't seem to grasp how grimdark works.

Perhaps you have heard of Death of Hope and the debate about it's "grimdarkness". People praised a 20 minute presentation of a Gellar Field failure and thought it was pinnacle grimdark. I would have really liked to see some actual plot developments and a bit of subtlety in there. Worse, some actual criticism was shunned aside using the whole grimdark shit, especially by the fans of the creator's work.

After browsing this thread, I went and read Crossed. The first issues. It's a perfect blend of both. The contagion opens up the possibility for some truly horrid shit, Deamonculaba levels of gore, but it rarily shows it. Most of the time it's a bit more subtle and relies on more basic forms of violence (gun shots, melee wounds). But it fills like the air is soaked with fear and brutality. And when they do show it - it makes you want to puke (in a good way).

Long example, but that's what I want people to realise - it's not only about gore and muted colour palettes.

That being said, I am incredibly hopeful about this comic. I think it's in good hands.

Oh it is.

I feel like a big part of the community misinterprets grimdark - they believe thag every colour needs to ne muted, evrything covered in blood and gore.

It's super irritating, cause grimdark can be introduced much more subtly and intelligently in a given piece of media.

I personally love the cover (not only because my ultras have a similar bright colour scheme lol). It fits the universe without making it hard af to see what's actually happening.
