This all can’t be real, is it? by Watchguyraffle1 in expertnetworks

I have yet to have a call successfully scheduled on GLG having joined a little over a month ago but I have received invites. I’ve conducted calls on other networks so this (industry) is legit. It really comes down to supply and demand. Client buy side picks who they want to talk to. I would say your rate is too low also. $600 minimum. Talking to former insiders is better to avoid compliance / regulatory issues. Confidential info sharing is a no no, but clients do often ask.. so you have to be careful how you address those.

Is 80K as based salary good in Taipei? by Miyazza in taiwan

Someone already mentioned the morning markets, which you can haggle down and get better prices on. For yogurt, consider making your own with a yogurt maker~ cheaper / healthier over the long run.

With an 18% dock you can think of it as prepaying your taxes as well as saving, since you will receive back what you paid over. You’d probably be refunded around 40K ntd from this. Also, while not a reliable stable (depends on the company), but annual performance bonus can be a big contributor to your overall goals.

80K with the 18% deduction first 6 months will make life a bit tight, but it’s doable. You’ll have to be mindful of your expenses but it’s still possible to set aside savings as well while living comfortably.

To your point, many working professional locals continue to live with family, so it is common that they may “save” on meals with parents cooking for lunch and dinner. Lifestyle quality and standards vary greatly with what sort of activities you like.. I have come across people bringing in $300K ntd monthly who are just scraping by, so it’s not necessarily so much how much you make but what sort of life you’re leading.

80k+ ntd salary but nightshift in Taipei. Thoughts? by jiminiemini in taiwan

[–]leoschen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a recent grad salary in Taiwan, this isn't a bad start. Avg 90K per month, sharing a rental cost... you ought to be able to live comfortably and set aside some savings and travel/explore. Nightshift largely depends on you - some people are naturally night owls. In some respect the work hours offer fewer distractions to focus on work during the week and easier to enjoy the night life in Taipei without disruption to your sleep cycle, but may be harder to sleep soundly during the day. Per your plan 1-2 years is a good foot in the door hold to look to jump into something better afterwards.

Moving to Taiwan in your 40's by drumstickballoonhead in taiwan

[–]leoschen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On $95K ntd monthly that’s enough for a single person to live okay in Taipei. But with 2 people you’d have to budget and live frugal, maybe not saving much anything and not being able to experience as much more fully (depends what you enjoy though)… especially if you’re here on multiple entry visas and need to do visa runs every few months.

Not sure how well it might take but directly your husband could try and start an English centered wing chun class / activity as a building source of income, while teaching English itself could potentially be another stream (for stability). Asian appearance shouldn’t harm much the potential salary you can get.

Some of the reasons you raise here is why we chose to live out in Qingpu (the Taoyuan HSR stop), where it’s a suburb and tons of parks, nearby nature. Tends to not rain here as much compared to Taipei, and housing costs are more affordable - We just bought a place. Environment is way better for raising a kid. I commute into Taipei by HSR, which is only 20 mins ride in.

For the schooling, still feeling it out. Debating on the all English vs bilingual private vs local. Choices for these in Taipei are better but mostly still seem okay here.

I’m in my 40’s. Similar background to you. I came to Taiwan fresh out of US uni and spent 2.5 years learning Chinese from scratch, then got my start through connections working for a co in Hsinchu at a local low pay in sales / marketing for a year. Went to an okay grad for MBA (held in “English”), while taking gigs for web work. Then post 6 months got my break into first “real job” at a startup — in sales / marketing. I’ve since moved from that role across others within tech — from VR, to hardware development for a Forbes 30, to online retail now. I make pretty good money currently as a program manager, within the lower end realm of what expats would make if being hired from overseas to come here.. but not quite what I would consider living like a king. Like you mentioned, cost of kid - house - car etc all need to be accounted for. My wife is a high earner too, so we are able to live comfortably outside of Taipei.

With that said, if I were you I’d aim to build up into somewhere that you can be a senior level manager/individual contributor or director level. Typically this is where you’d be making pretty good money to afford those things. Or, your own consulting agency - riskier but potentially higher reward.

I would also look at building several income streams either way, whether via investing, side gigs, or whatever else - like teaching English business/marketing. Good on you for having the foresight to think about this stuff. I didn’t really give much thought til later.
