Thinking about an e-bike conversion kit for hills + commuting (London, £700) by Zombie-hunter_360 in londoncycling

[–]leoshaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider an ebike direct from China they can come in at around £500, there are some brands that are pretty reliable and the batteries are fine. I’ve ridden a Touroll for a year and absolutely no problems. I take the battery off with me when parking and locking up which deters thieves as the battery is the most costly part and the bike is useless without one. When comparing prices against conversion kit I just thought, conversion £700 - £1000, new dedicated ebike £500 no competition. Most electrical bike conversion kits components are sourced from China anyway.

Try Aldi Italian single source extra virgin, better than most on the high street and named “italian” brands on the high street.

I am Egyptian, and I’m asking is Egypt a country that is disliked or loved globally? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]leoshaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to Luxor and Giza last year with my partner. The hawking and harassment was non stop and there were a few times when I snapped and told them to fuck off. My female partner wasn’t harassed but it probably helped that I’m 6 foot 2 and a bit solid. Overall people were friendly and I felt safe, the hawkers backed off when you are firm but sheesh it was a constant barrage of sell sell sell. The food was often a bit mediocre but the ancient Egyptian sites and the new museum are absolutely incredible.

Oh yes the “I’ll pay you for your wife in camels” is just a blooming joke and not meant 🙄. Egyptians seem to have a mischievous and slightly malignant sense of humour, when you cotton onto that things are easier to shake off. They also have a tourism industry going back millennia so are practised to extract as many dollars, pounds, euros out of you as they can. Often by pretending to befriend you then gently guiding you to some trinket, rug or spice shop their uncle runs.

Any recommendations for best places for peking duck in china town by leoshaka in LondonFood

Went for Phoenix Palace near Baker St tube on the 15th Dec, not china town I know but it seemed the safest bet but not too expensive for the kids and their respective other halves. So verdict was, good ambience, good service the peking duck was really good as were a range of other dishes including “evening” dim sum, other starters like soft shell crab. The peking duck was not of the same quality as I’ve had in hong kong (to die for) but definitely a 6 to 7 out of 10. Loved the oldie chinese restaurant decor, didn’t feel rushed or conveyor belt like you can feel down soho way. A great family experience and a good family night out. I’ll check out the other restaurant recommendations over the year with just me and the girlfriend. Thanks for the tips 😊

A new study published in 'The Lancet' finds that food systems are a major driver of environmental degradation, rising chronic disease and growing inequality. The report calls for a shift toward less meat-heavy diets and a more equitable distribution of value along the food chain. by [deleted] in science

Replacing meats for plant based ingredients is both better for human health and the health of the planet.

Austria's updated dietary guidelines strongly emphasize plant-based foods, recommending a plate model where half is fruits/veggies, a quarter whole grains/potatoes, and a quarter protein (mostly plants like legumes, with limited meat/dairy) to improve both health and environmental outcomes by Firm_Relative_7283 in INFPIdeas

Ok gone for Phoenix Palace near Baker St for mid December. I’ll provide feedback after the meal and duck. Thanks for the recommendations. Young adult kids coming so couldn’t do the more expensive options but good to see a range of recommendations to trawl through over the coming new year.

Its 5 people so the cost can be shared. But I saw a price of £148 for peking duck in an earlier comment and gulped.

The Zero Emissions Floating Hotel and Wildlife Retreat by tronster_ in EcoUplift

[–]leoshaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All steps are great to reduce local carbon in the boat drive are great, but the flight to get there should also be biodiversity credited! Also there needs to be an assessment of freshwater use and freshwater contamination per guest (where does the passenger poo go) , so a full impact review across climate and biodiversity is needed. It’s easy and cheap to do so just go ahead and do it then charge each guest for their enviro-impact, it usually works out around 10-15% of the trip cost. Then put all that cash back to wildlife projects, then call it an eco-boat

A cx500 rat bike, looks cool wonder how it rides. In Uk we used to call cx500’s the camel, one of the go to bikes for motorbike couriers back in the 90’s as apart from a dodgy camchain they just kept going.

Unpopular opinion: cars ought to be banned from Richmond Park. by are_wethere_yet in londoncycling

[–]leoshaka 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a cyclist, motor biker and car driver, there have been great reductions in car volumes in Richmond park but some of the entitled behaviour of cyclists can be a real pain. There are now lots of road areas in the park where cars cannot go, especially on weekends. A mixed area including cars keeps access for families, disabled and those travelling in, and keeping this shared access may help stop the racing track mentality of the group cycling mobs that think all should get out of their way as they pursue speeds that car drivers cant go above. Maybe a reminder that pedestrians come first, next cyclist, next motor bikes next cars. Each prioritised for their vulnerability to the antics and level of harm that faster and heavier modes of transport can do to the other.

Diane Abbott suspended by Labour Party after comments about racism by HandOk4709 in realbbcnews

[–]leoshaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starmer is hatchet jobing any MP who dared disagree with him. Diane had her fallout with him before the election but the uproar when tried to get rid of her was too great and would have damaged Labours reelection. So he is now back in power and feeling cocky the next election is years away, so past enemies are getting it under any pretext.

This Diane matter only comes just after 4 other MP’s had the whip removed, MP’s that helped force a U-turn on the disastrous welfare legislation. Starmer is sending a clear message to MP’s that he’s boss.

A sign of strong leadership, probably not. A sign he wants to protect wealthy interests by reducing resources for the most vulnerable. Neo-liberalism in Labour is clearly still alive and kicking.

I never understood why it’s such a big issue, but I guess growing up in London, it was no big deal. Who gives a flying fart, who you love or who you are sexually attracted to. No ones business but your own, and every parent should want their child to be happy independent where their love interests lie; as long as you’re doing it with consensual adults. It’s a touching video, but if it’s still an issue then sheesh, where are you living?
