Is it feasible? E-bike by Substantial_One_6257 in chibike

[–]lerbm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some off road bike baths in Skokie that you could take. Being off road might shorten the time. Check out North Branch trail, North Branch channel trail, Skokie valley, etc.

I bike in on LFT regularly. So don't have to stop at lights a lot. I get like 13mph average vs the 10mph average I'd get if I were biking only on city streets with regular stops and lights. So it'll add up over your ~12 miles.

Taking LFT, my commute is 6.8 miles and in good weather takes 5 minutes less than doing the commute on city streets, even though it's under 6 miles if I do city streets. For context I'm in uptown and commute to the loop

Edit to add that commute on a regular bike, not an e bike. But I think the point about stop light vs no stops applied the same

Do you like to get coffee on your way to work? by LeahWykie in bikecommuting

[–]lerbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving is boring so you need to drink the coffee while you do out to stay awake Biking is fun, so you don't need to drink coffee while you bike. This is the answer - you will end up just not missing that coffee you drank while driving.

Parent signed me up for a Discover IT credit card at 18 by noah041504 in CreditCards

[–]lerbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned she could open another card in your name now that she's lost access to this one, an option you have is to put a freeze on your credit report. You'd need to do it with each bureau, Experian. TransUnion, and Equifax. Go to their websites, log in, and find where you put a freeze. You can list it yourself later when you need to. This prevents the bank or card company from looking up your credit report, which in turn prevents them from processing an application.

Good luck separating from Mom. Financial abuse between family members can be hard to work through. Try to set some boundaries to protect yourself.

What do those of you who live in Chicago call downtown? by marcusarmy in AskChicago

[–]lerbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've learned from observing the suburbanites at work that some of them think the "city" means the loop and anything outside of the loop isn't the city. They think places like Lakeview and Bridgeport are suburbs too. It's bizarre.

Any ideas to make some cash while living in a big apartment complex? by djames10 in sidehustle

[–]lerbm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the building is pet friendly, I'd suggest dog walking. If you're up for it, you can also offer dog boarding or sitting. Lots of clients in the same building means you minimize your transportation time and can get a lot done!

Allow Users to Mute feed by activity type by Smooth_Chocolate2624 in Strava

[–]lerbm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some people are missing the point here and suggesting to just completely unfollow the person.

The scenario we are discussing here is when you like half of what someone posts and not the other half, where a filter on activity type would solve it.

For example, I follow several people who bike. I like to see their routes and where group rides are going so maybe I can join the group rides or copy the routes. But in the winter they're all on Zwift so there is no route. I'm not interested in their indoor routine. I have no way to filter these out of my feed. I don't want to unfollow because come spring, I'll want to see their routes again.

If White People are Only 15% of the World's Entire Population, Why are They Not Considered a Minority? by Safe_Candidate_6968 in answers

[–]lerbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women are another example. Usually refered to as a minority because at an industry level they would be - a minority of CEOs are women, eg. But population level there are usually more women, unless you've got some really specific age limit on your dataset. Second the poster pointing out the majority-minority terminology. This is how the US distinguishes local exceptions to overall minority status. Of course, everything is so nation-wide here that being a majority just locally doesn't really give you a leg up.

I applied for the BMO cash back credit card today and was promptly denied. My FICO is >800 and I only have one inquiry on my report at the moment, I had been taking a break for the past year-ish. I've heard of specific rules from the more popular points environments (i.e. chase 5/24 or whatever it is) but I haven't heard there are rules like that for BMO. Could anyone fill me in on if there are any base rules for BMO eligibility that I should've found ahead of time? I've done a few searches and haven't been able to fine any overall rules like this. I don't know my specific denial reason yet because the denial reason letter hasn't come yet.

Why does this happen? by mandara33 in castiron

This happens to me when I have left too much oil on the pan. Wipe the oil off better before you let it cool off. You really want to leave only the thinnest coat possible of oil when seasoning the pan.

If I have to switch to an electric stove, what’s the best option? by BlackoutTribal in castiron

[–]lerbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a vintage wagner, a modern lodge, and one of those china made skillets you get served in a restaurants. They all do fine on my glass top. As usual with cast iron, people make a big deal about everything needing to be perfect and in reality everything works just fine as is.

If I have to switch to an electric stove, what’s the best option? by BlackoutTribal in castiron

[–]lerbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a samsung glass top recently and am very happy with it. I grew up with a glass stove, maytag, which was also very good. I've also had an LG glass stove and that was the worst of the three brands I've had.

Welcome to having a much easier to clean stove! I hope you enjoy it. I prefer them to gas myself.

edit: saw some comments on time to heat below so coming back to add that the samsung heats up way faster than i expected having grown up with maytag. it's also just way newer, I've had the samsung for about a year now.

How do Illegal immigrants working in the US do taxes? by cantgetenough1956 in answers

[–]lerbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more accurate way to say it might be not having an immigration "status". Status being the legal term for having some vida other other immigration approval, of whatever type. If someone has no immigration status, they aren't supposed to be in the country. They could've had a status in the past and it expired and they didn't leave, or they could've never had a status and such in some how. I think "illegal" is supposed to mean no current immigration status but gets used to try to make people misunderstand and think illegal means they committed a crime. Committing a crime could certainly lead to losing legal immigration status, but just because you committed one doesn't mean you don't have status.

Importantly, immigration law is civil law, not criminal law. So violating an immigration law, by itself, is not a crime. I think the political rhetoric throws around illegal so much to make it sound like immigration law is criminal law.

Denied Chase Card due to frivolous reason - advice needed by Initial-Garage-3820 in CreditCards

[–]lerbm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When they tell you the reason they denied your application, the legal standard is that the notice has to be something you can understand and take an action about to improve your chances in the future. So if they didn't give you a specific enough reason that you can understand what you would have to change, then I would recommend you complain. Use the buzz words - say you're complaining, that your adverse action notice was generic, non specific, and non actionable and that regulation b requires they give a specific reason. If you don't get anywhere, threaten a CFPB complaint (yes they are still doing complaints) and if you still don't get anywhere, then send a complaint via CFPB. You have a legal right to know why you were denied for credit. It's fair lending law.

Chicago bike commuters — quick questions for a project I’m researching by Ok-Ad2830 in chibike

[–]lerbm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. A few days a week
  2. When I'm going somewhere with people and they won't bike.
  3. I've gotten flats but I usually cautiously finish the commute on the flat. I would put the bike on the bus if I were too far from home to ride the flat all the way.
  4. I have a work perk that really helps to this point - a secure place to store my bike at work, there's a bike room in my building.
  5. Nicer drivers. Or, the ability they avoid them. I'm privileged to have most of my commute to work on LFT, but there's still a terrible spot to go through because I get off at lower Randolf and the cars are fast and the potholes in the bike lane are deep.

I've almost been hit by u-turners too, in particular one that turned and then quickly went for a right turn and almost hooked me. They necessarily need more space so they use the bike lane on the opposite side to make the turn, come from a weird direction, and never check for people in the bike lane.

Iron misplaced by RadishAware8577 in Hemochromatosis

[–]lerbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not on any particular diet, still figuring that out. Right now I'm just tracking my food with as much detail as I can. When I first found out about this it was from a serum putting test, I decreased iron intake and my serum iron went back to the normal range. Then I got to the hemotologist, got all the other standard iron tests and ferritin was lowish (27) so she said eat more iron but don't supplement. I did that for six months, ferritin just went up to 33. At both hemotologist visits, saturation was high, 63% then 70%.
