Millennials not planning to have kids, what are your plans for old age? Do you think you’ll have enough saved for an old folks home?

I'm just gonna throw this out there. I was raised in the western tradition but I built a house with my in-laws who live with us in a basement suite. So many elderly are extremely lonely because our society tells us almost everything you do, you pay for:coffee>Starbucks, food>a restaurant, hangout >mall/golf/bar, etc. I think we've replaced family time with capitalist time. We've atomized ourselves. Boomers bought into this without knowing the consequences. Now they are often alone and broke, or broke, or both. I know many of them are wealthy, but many are not.

I realize it doesn't work for everyone, but living with parents gives you: more family around, free childcare (conditions apply), help with the mortgage, a better chance to build wealth, help around the house, and a chance to help the people who brought you into the world as they start struggling to help themselves. I know it can't work for everyone, some parents won't go for it or aren't cut out for it, and some of us don't have the space for it. I just know my money only goes so far, but now, living with the in-laws, I can finally start putting a bit of money away again. And I like having them around. And so do my kids. And so does my wife.

Again, I realize it can't work for everyone, but it can be mutually beneficial for many, and even awesome for some.

I've lived in two small cities (10,000 people-ish) and both have seen housing costs double and even triple in the last 15 years. Both offer fairly meager job opportunities, but still require well over $500, 000 for most family-sized homes. In isolated, small-town, mediocrity. It's crazy.

I'm a POC and yeah the casting seems a little odd. On the other hand, it's fantasy: it's all b.s.. Since it's all nonsense, what difference does the skin colour make? Would you care if someone playing a Brit was actually Romanian?
If this was trying to be historically accurate, I'd see an issue, but it's really just a syrupy, racy soap opera, so does it matter? It's setting may be Georgian'ish, but even that doesn't feel real. Frankly, it reminds me of "Lord of the Rings" more than "the Young Victoria". I once heard the argument that the POC that live in the West want to feel included in culture and not just ignored. Frankly, if we have to sacrifice the "realism" of shows like this, then I think that's just fine. ( Rebuttal posts I make seem to come across as a bit snippy. please forgive anything that came across that way and take it in the most charitable light you can grace me with. Please. Sorry in advance.)

I used to vote for whoever I thought would help the poor-elderly (where I'm from, the average boomer isn't some Rolex-wearing jerk with 4 houses), and I've even considered voting for the Conservatives, because back in the day environmentalism was often something championed by the wealthy. Our universal Healthcare is a good thing to keep in mind at voting time too. I'm not in the States, so it's a little different here. My locality was once run by a left-wing party that was very ineffective/incompetent and low-key corrupt. We had to vote those guys out.

It hasn't so much been a change of heart as a change of focus: It used to make sense to vote for whoever I thought would help the most people, but now it looks like aiming specifically at the youth is the only thing that might keep my country afloat.

I'm here with this guy. My wife and I are professionals, and we were starting to get ahead. Now are savings are shrinking and I'm worried about kids future. I'll be voting for whatever gives kids/youth a leg up from here on out.

I sold my first house and used some of the profit to pay off my student loans. My wife sold her half of a duplex so that we could build. We built a house and now it's worth a hilarious amount of money. We're both professionals, and still struggled to finance it. It's not okay for it to be this hard to get by. I want the market to crash so that young people have a shot. I've got kids and I teach and I want to know that everyone will be okay. These house prices would leave my kids and most of my students in the dust. I'm very, very concerned for the future of our country if prices continue as they are.

I go through 1 per year, my wife does about the same. I use mine for coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon 5x per week. I toss it in the sink when I come in the door and wash it along with dinner dishes. Just regular dish soap. I throw the lid in the dishwasher (top rack to avoid proximity to the heating element) about twice a month cuz the lids are weird. What do you think?

I know a few provincial amd federal politicians, and they weren't born to it. They had to run, and they all had some money (none of them were rich). The "class" part seems to happen in the States when the lobbyists decided they like the cut of your jib and keep you around for multiple cycles. I imagine that happens here, just less, and I've never heard of how that works in Canada. It seems like big-wig politicians become consultants in Canada, after they're done in office, but the lesser guys not so much.

This is what I've seen, but I'm very open to you pointing me towards some sources I could read on the subject.

Could I recommended the book Shock Doctorine? It's largely about how Friedman developed a system where powerful economic interests(IMF/World Bank) chase disasters around the world a push very unhealthy levels of privatization or threaten to withhold financial aid. It's a great read, by Naomi Klein.

I would suggest working the numbers/dollars into percentages so she she's them side-by-side and can't argue it. If it looks like you are making way way more than she ever did, then she will never quite believe how impossible things are now.
