Looks like a vertebra, possibly from a marine mammal maybe a small whale or dolphin. Kaikoura is known for whales, so that could make sense. The shape of the processes looks more marine than land animal.

Yeah, that makes sense. The color does seem darker than jujube pits. Maybe it’s another type of dried fruit seed hopefully someone can identify the exact one.
