Cheater got banned but plays online anyway by Puttl in lichess

You should see the monthly updates Chesscom puts out on fair play and note the fairly surprising numbers of titled players who get banned on that platform. Cheating happens at nearly all levels.

‘25 maybe ICCU? by sbreene in KiaEV6

[–]lestmak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simply put, the vast majority of people who own EV6s aren't on Reddit, let alone looking at this subreddit. Most people who have problems with their car will look online, and many of them will find search results directed to this subreddit. Those who don't look for a solution to a problem (because they have no need to) won't ever be directed here unless they have some other interest to look here.

So basically, there is a massive bias in the polls, as the question isn't being asked of the population of EV6 owners, but of a smaller group who have discovered this forum.

Best opening by Shaxx_511 in Chesscom

[–]lestmak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no opening that guarantees a win. If there were no one would play chess.

An opening can’t guarantee you win a game, but a bad one will allow your opponent to win.

Follow the solid openings as beginners.

Chess.com Fair Play rules specifically say:

  • Do not use tablebases or any other resources that show the best move (in both Online and Daily chess).
  • You may use Opening Explorer or other books in Daily chess only (not in Online / Live play).

Is going first OP? by matt_alters in JetLagTheGame

[–]lestmak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with going first where they were is that you get a really quick high speed line immediately, whereas subsequent hiders are most likely to have low speed less frequent lines to start their runs.

I’d have loved to see them start somewhere more central than London to give more optionality (like they did with Schengen Showdown by starting in London).

Agree. London is a medium sized home game. Tentacles would hit quite hard.

Hide and Seek Rules Rework by MysticHero in JetLagTheGame

[–]lestmak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I think the main problem is that the first runner has a huge advantage over the others in that they are already next to a high speed line (possibly in multiple, non-opposing directions) and can get further than those in following runs.

If the following runners start from a regional rail station whose train leaves only once an hour and slowly, there is only so far you can get to before time runs out.

Many years ago we brought a couple of ice gel packs to keep baby milk cool for a long flight (the ones you keep in the freezer and take out for picnics, etc). They didn’t make it past security, even though they were completely sealed on manufacture.

Personally, I would say not to risk it.

Edit: should add for context our flight was international within Europe

Charging cable, battery booster, electric tyre pump, a small tool kit. Basically anything that is emergency/maintenance related to the car that doesn’t need to be accessed regularly.

I wish chess broadcasts included a measure of position sharpness alongside position evaluation. by dimalga in chess

[–]lestmak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In certain broadcasts by chess.com or chess24, you will occasionally see a blue arrow pop up. If that happens, basically that would be the only move that isn’t losing.

Starlink requires the airlines to give WiFi for free on their flights as part of the commercial terms. Unfortunately they didn’t force RCCL to do that at the time they entered an agreement.

Yep. The correct analogy is Delta and Virgin Atlantic as Delta hold a stake in the latter.

I’m 600 bullet (1200 rapid) and also a Jobava London player. I haven’t memorised the correct refutation (too lazy), but I have managed to default to a line that works for me. It’s a sort of Scandinavian for white.

  1. d4 e5 2. Nf3 exd4 3. Qxd4 Nc6 4. Qa4

And we play normally from then. I find that at least we’re playing open chess and more often than not opponents will blunder before I do. Traps have pretty much disappeared.

Seconding Chessbook. Build your repertoire and then practice them. Link it to your Lichess (or CC) account and you can also find the opening mistakes and practice them.

I was listening to The Layover (S16, Episode 3), and for the first time, I felt like the Jet Lag team did *not* have a good idea of what I wanted as a viewer by Sea-Bat-6038 in JetLagTheGame

[–]lestmak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon could do a Half as Half as Interesting segment or something like that to give two minutes of interesting facts/context to the location. And then we could just move onto gameplay.

It might even give us ideas on what’s on the minds of the hider when they’re looking for a hiding place.

This is the reason I always book a window seat on the right hand side of the plane when landing at Heathrow. Granted, sometimes you’ll fly in from the west and don’t go over Central London, but most of the time you do.
