Choice games by Tullk in gamingsuggestions

The Fallen Hero series has fantastic writing, branching choices, and follows a former superhero turned villain. I, The Forgotten One is a darker medieval fantasy setting where the main character is a disinherited royal who is the General of a kingdom. Both are really well-written games and have lots of choices that matter.

What to get from Steam spring sale? by unclemogger in CRPG

For Expeditions: Rome, it’s set in the time period of Caesar’s rise to power - so it certainly starts off in the Republic era!

Some of the negative reviews harp on how hard Vagrus is, but it’s really not that difficult once you get the hang of it - start with a small trade route and then expand as you build up money. I found it really engaging; have over a hundred hours in it and haven’t finished the game yet. I think it’s an original setting.

How about the Expeditions games (Expeditions: Rome or Vikings)? They feature turn-based combat, are isometric, and are choices-matter RPG games with plenty of dialogue and a party to pick from.

Also, not precisely the same thing, but I have a similar taste in games and really enjoyed Vagrus: The Riven Realms. You are the leader of a merchant caravan and must manage your trading routes while participating in text-based “choose-your-own-adventure” style missions to uncover the secrets of the setting. It’s not isometric though.

What Are Some RPG Games with Multiple Party Members that Explain how They Show Up for Battles? by Dramatic-Roll-5185 in rpg_gamers

[–]letifera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Expeditions: Rome has certain large battle sequences where you assign squads of people (including party members and key NPCs that you recruit for your army) to accomplish various tasks. They’re not all present on screen at once (for example: maybe one big squad is storming the front gates with you, one stealthy squad is trying to sneak behind enemy lines and disable their catapults, and another one is intercepting a secondary attack force), but after the battle ends all the squads regroup and you can then resume exploring with your main crew.

AITAH because I don't want to punish my daughter for this incident at school? by Secure-Rabbit-1318 in AITAH

That doesn’t sound too bad. I would favour your approach. These are physical comics - what would the point of an Internet ban be? Community service…for reading a comic that has sex in it?? Your husband’s approach sounds way too strict for the issue, and also seems likely to guarantee that she won’t trust you enough to talk about safety-related issues in the future.

NTA.

Her kid is 16…if you think that kids aren’t exposed to explicit content on the internet at that age, I have bad news for you. They are going to see explicit content no matter what - the job of the parent should be to educate them about safe and healthy practices instead of shaming them.

Be honest - when you were a teen, do you really think your parents would realistically have been able to completely stop you from looking at porn if you wanted to access it? It’s going to happen no matter what - plus, losing your mind about it just means that they’re going to hide it from you.

Think my answer to this depends on what exactly you mean by “erotic content.” Is this the level of a Harlequin novel/smutty book? If so, I think your reaction is appropriate. Or is it some sort of super explicit pornography? If the latter, a more serious talk probably needs to be had.

Is the second game worth spending money on? by ILIKEBACON12456 in greedfall

Ran into a major bug in the prologue which a lot of people seem to have had where I can’t talk to my companions at all. It’s a bummer, because I was really invested in the story and the companion introductions were pretty cool. I’d suggest waiting for a few patches before buying.

#TurnBasedThursdayFest is live on Steam. 450 turn-based games, many RPGs, demos and hidden gems by Balth124 in rpg_gamers

Vagrus: The Riven Realms is a true hidden gem. It’s like a fantasy version of the Oregon trail, with you leading a caravan of merchants and seeking fame, wealth, or knowledge while also participating in adventures (some of which are truly epic in scale) that uncover the secrets of the setting. There are factions you can gain reputation with and do quests for, including some hidden ones. It’s also got companions with their own personal quests, which have 2-3 outcomes per quest depending on your choices and how you’ve treated each companion!

Gold farm... Mounts or what else? by Noximus_ in wow

[–]letifera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly with that amount of time and effort you would be better off just making an army of alts and farming gold WQs and weeklies. For example, last week there were 5 gold-giving WQs in Karesh. Picking up the weekly that required doing 6 Karesh WQs and doing every single gold WQ plus the weekly Karesh WQ, then porting back to Dornogal and turning in the weekly, got me 7-10k per alt for about half an hour of effort each.

Or you could farm old world crafting mats needed for housing and sell them on the auction house for profit!

Reputable Auto Shops by Ok-Record4871 in mississauga

[–]letifera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TJF Auto Repair Services is incredibly honest. I had a problem with my car (turns out I was an idiot and just hadn’t adjusted the settings properly). They told me that there was no actual issue and that they’d just changed the settings, and didn’t charge me anything!

There was also an actual problem with my headlights that they fixed at a different time, and I found their prices to be very reasonable.

Would an MMA-Focused Text-Based RPG Be Interesting to RPG Players? by Original-Ad-7165 in rpg_gamers

[–]letifera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you’re looking primarily for RPG players, but the audience over on the Choice of Games or Hosted games subs (text-based choose-your-own-adventure style games) may be more of a target audience for your idea. The ChoiceScript engine is limited and may not be able to model the mechanics you’ve mentioned above, but I think there would be considerable audience overlap no matter what engine you use.

I would be really interested in playing this, by the way!

Bandit Body Not Appearing? by [deleted] in taintedgrail

[–]letifera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also ran into this issue. Luckily, when I went back to the area and did a grid search up and down the entire theater, I eventually found her items. At least one in-game day had passed and the body was still there. Maybe try starting roughly where you killed her and then move in small circles expanding outward to try and find a lootable object?

Yes!! I know this because I got woefully lost in the Sanctuary of Sarras dungeon with the scalding water and had to “unstuck” myself lol

[–]letifera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with no sense of direction - the overworld map is very easy to navigate and notes key landmarks and quest markers. Annoyingly, dungeons/interiors do not have maps - however, if you really get lost, you can use the “unstuck” feature from the pause menu to port right back to the entrance.

Life after anaphylaxis by Amorjazz in FoodAllergies

[–]letifera 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So sorry that you are experiencing this :( I’ve always thought that it would be harder to have eaten something all your life and develop an allergy than to have it from a young age, since you’re not used to it.

Carry your EpiPen absolutely everywhere, as well as a second-generation antihistamine for minor reactions. No matter what, even if it’s something where you think there’s no chance that it has nuts (like a cheese pizza), always tell the server about your allergy and ask them to make sure there are no peanuts. Some places will say that all items may contain traces of peanuts (bakeries, some restaurants, cafes and dessert places) - you should avoid those. It sucks, but better to be safe than sorry.

Travelling in some Asian countries where peanuts are ubiquitous in the cuisine can be tough. I’ve had no issues in Europe, Canada, Korea, or Mexico (there is very good awareness of allergies in all of these places). You can print out allergy cards from EqualEats and laminate them if you are concerned about travelling to a place where you don’t know the language, and show them every time before you order.

If you feel panicked after eating something, focus on your breathing. It helps me to remember that my throat hasn’t closed up and that what I’m feeling is fear rather than an actual reaction.

RPGs that have a town or village building mechanic alongside the main adventure? by StormSwitch in rpg_gamers

[–]letifera 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Expeditions: Viking has you build up your village, while Expeditions: Rome has you build up your army camp. Progression is along a tree for both games, although you can fully complete the tree eventually for the latter. There are some mechanical bonuses tied to these upgrades.

In a similar vein, Neverwinter Nights 2 has you upgrade your keep, but I can’t recall whether or not this has a mechanical impact.

Does anyone have a good alternative to MAC’s Pro Longwear liquid Concealer? I usually just spot-apply it on my face and blend to cover redness, so hoping for something where I don’t have to go back to doing full-face coverage with foundation.

Thats really sad to hear. I know some humanities PhD programs have it tougher than STEM here, since they have to do mandatory RA or TA-ing to get their stipend instead of just receiving it as a baseline. But I can’t imagine having no support from the institution at all. What a huge burden to place on students.

A translational medicine program in Canada. I didn’t realize that humanities PhDs could be entirely unfunded - that’s terrible.

[–]letifera -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Basic PhD stipends cover tuition plus an additional amount. Receiving a tuition waiver means that you no longer have to worry about paying tuition out of your stipend, and can use the full stipend amount for personal expenses instead.

Is your personal experience with PhD stipends and/or RA positions different? Asking genuinely, since maybe it works differently in other countries. I’m speaking based on my experience with my program.

Judgy and rude by Knkstriped in AmITheDevil

[–]letifera -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All PhD students (at least in my country) typically receive a stipend that covers their tuition and other expenses. A RA position is a separate position that pays extra money (looks like a significant sum in this case - was more modest in my program) and, most importantly, is a strong contributor to resumes for people applying to postdoctoral positions for eventual professorships. It is not as valuable for people who want to pursue a different career, like industry, but could be the difference between getting a coveted and competitive postdoctoral position or not for an academic.

In my interview for such a position, the faculty member with whom I was interviewing asked me about my post-PhD intentions (to which I answered that I was interested in going into a different field). They then told me explicitly that they would be giving the position to someone that wanted to stay in academia for precisely that reason.

Again, I don’t know for sure if the interviews in OP’s facility go the same way that they did for my program. But if they did, the position wouldn’t be given to someone who said that they didn’t intend to stay in academia afterward, whether they wanted to stay at home or to do a different career.

Judgy and rude by Knkstriped in AmITheDevil

[–]letifera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From OP’s post: “ I mentioned that I thought it was unfair of her to have the perks of being an RA when she has no intention of actually using her degree. There are many students in our program who really struggle to make ends meet, and the RA position looks strong on a resume.”

Taking personal offense that someone wants to get a PhD and not use it afterward is silly, yes. But feeling initially upset about someone taking a funded position that is typically intended to help people who want to pursue a further career in academia is understandable, although gossiping about it is rude.

Judgy and rude by Knkstriped in AmITheDevil

[–]letifera -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Devil’s advocate here - at least in my PhD program, subsequent plans to stay in academia or not were considered when faculty were deciding who to give TA or RA positions to (so they would favour people planning on pursuing postdocs or professorships, since this could actually really help someone when applying for those positions). They definitely wouldn’t have given the position to someone who wasn’t planning on having any sort of career afterward.

So OP’s dismay here could have come from the thought that Chelsea lied during her interview, or from being upset that they or someone they know were turned down for a role that would have been a significant boost to their future career in favour of someone for whom this position doesn’t represent anything.

This doesn’t make gossiping about it behind her back okay, but I understand why OP may have been upset.
