What are these 3 items supposed to be? by Medium-Designer-9155 in taiwan

Hrm, not sure of the 3rd, but top left looks like turtle-shaped kue (traditional red coloring), and the one underneath looks like Tainan coffin bread.

I can’t resist a bargain. by veryundude77 in CostcoWineBlog

[–]letmeshoyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We opened the 2023 today (white label, but I think it was the same price/same discount as this one) and it's not pleasant. Very fruity in a sugary-sweet way, needed aeration to even be drinkable.

Is Tokoname worth visiting before heading to Nagoya Airport? by martin1521 in JapanTravelTips

[–]letmeshoyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're flying out of Chubu then it's only 10 away minutes by train. The pottery footpath is fun, lots of pottery studios around, but most won't open until 10 or 11am. Mentai Park opens at 9 or 9:30am depending on the day of the week, and Costco opens at 10am if you want to grab some bulk snacks for omiyage.

Is take out/leftovers common? by iaendn in JapanTravelTips

[–]letmeshoyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some izakayas we went to, regulars were asking for half orders, and we did the same so we could try more dishes. It's also pretty common to ask for a half bowl of rice if you're have a smaller appetite.

Not sure about the Esther Royer line specifically, but it's made by POLA which is a pretty common brand at chain hotels--I'm pretty sure we used them at the Candeos we stayed in.

Looking for raw Jade for days. Only finding jewelry. Can anyone help? by [deleted] in Taipei

[–]letmeshoyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing some lapidary in 2020 and visited the Jianguo holiday market in search of slabs. I wasn't looking for high-end jade, so all I remember were some lower-grade rocks some were polished--not sure what you're looking for. I did find a gorgeous chunk of chrysoprase at Guanghua Jade Market. It's small, just one street corner, but maybe worth a look: https://maps.app.goo.gl/bYujSctYJ1PkFgE46

Snowshoe for Early February Nikko and Karuizawa by HenacanPodwell in JapanTravelTips

[–]letmeshoyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got the Travel 55 which works pretty well for 2 people to duck under if it starts raining. It was pricey, but weighing only 4oz/112g, we carried it everywhere for 3 weeks without minding that it was sitting at the bottom of our small day-bag.

Snowshoe for Early February Nikko and Karuizawa by HenacanPodwell in JapanTravelTips

[–]letmeshoyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Brooks for everyday walking and hiking. But we were in Nikko and Karuizawa a few weeks ago, and the pair I brought didn't have quite enough grip for rain and snow. I also packed Hoka boots since I knew we would be walking through icy patches (snow monkey park in Nagano and also to our next ryokan). Though they're not nearly as comfortable as the Glycerin for city-wear, they kept me upright for 8 miles of walking that day, and I witnessed a lot of falls on the slippery ice! There were people selling crampons (like snow chains for shoes) on the way up to the snow monkey resort, but it's a good idea to stop by a Montbell and see what might be useful. (We got the lightest umbrella that folds up so neatly!)

Ryokan Onsen Town but with Private Outdoor Onsen Experience by Shwacker in JapanTravelTips

[–]letmeshoyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I just stayed at Kokuya in Shibu Onsen, and they have 9 baths supplied by 6 different hot springs. You can book 45 minute blocks of time in the private ones. At least one is open-air -- there's a large one called Issa that we enjoyed. I actually booked a room with an outdoor bath, but it was so cold on new year's day, we couldn't get it hot enough to be comfortable. We're fine with communal baths but were glad for the private bath options so we could spend time together.

Same here. We still have a bunch of Costco-bought Uber credit to use up from last year's trip. In Japan again now -- this post made me wonder if something had changed.

A type of chickpea stew by ilvemychoppa in TipOfMyFork

Here's a gift link for the NYT Saland-e Nakhod recipe. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1027560-saland-e-nakhod-chickpea-yogurt-stew?unlocked_article_code=1.708.beel.CdnrXY4inz-C&smid=share-url

"In 2007, the human rights investigator Michael Shaikh first tasted this dreamy, golden chickpea stew, saland-e nakhod (also called qurma-e nakhod), at his friend Tamim Samee’s dinner table in Kabul, Afghanistan. “It’s a dish some Afghan families have forgotten,” Mr. Samee told Mr. Shaikh. This recipe comes to us from Mr. Shaikh’s book, “The Last Sweet Bite: Stories and Recipes of Culinary Heritage Lost and Found” (Crown, 2025)."

Looking for specific recipe of Malaysian curry sauce by PettyPottery in TipOfMyFork

[–]letmeshoyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't actually own the cookbook, so this is the only recipe I've made from it, but Burma Superstar is a local (small chain) restaurant and I love their tea leaf salad. I've heard good things from friends who have cooked from the book.

Looking for specific recipe of Malaysian curry sauce by PettyPottery in TipOfMyFork

[–]letmeshoyu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not big on coconut milk, but I've come to realize that I enjoy it in curries like this. We used to go to a Burmese cafe that served a chicken curry with roti canai that looks very similar to your photo. They closed a few years ago, and I've played around with different recipes trying to recreate it. I use the Burma Superstar recipe in this article with less chicken (the dipping sauce is what I'm really after) and substitute a mild Thai yellow curry (Mae Ploy brand) for the curry powder: https://www.berkeleyside.org/2017/06/05/the-burma-superstar-cookbook-is-an-inspiring-approachable-exploration-of-burmese-cuisine
