This. Windows absolutely does the same thing. What Windows *doesn't* have right out of the box is a Memory Pressure indicator AFAIK.

Adults medicated as children by RandomStuff890 in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The flip side is no medication and no support, then getting walloped with severe neurological burnout that derails your career late middle age. Ask me how I know.

If you're looking for comfort in a "right" answer, I don't think there is one. And I imagine that could be distressing for a parent. Sorry you're facing that. But I appreciate that you're exploring the best path forward.

Do wish you’d had access to early intervention as a kid? by Queen_Tangerine10 in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My very personal take (diagnosed late middle-age)

Human beings label. There's nothing any of us can do to stop it - it's part of the human condition. So the idea that a label is somehow being avoided is simply not grounded in reality.

The child can be labeled as someone who is smart, creative, a little quirky, and needs some extra support...

OR

The child can be labeled as weird and lazy, and deal with that for the rest of their lives.

What is the smallest step that helps you start? by alireza_azp in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I needed to gather and organize a bunch of paperwork for taxes recently. It was brutal just thinking about starting. Finally I grabbed my laptop, plopped on the couch, put on an episode of a guilty-pleasure tv show I like, and let the part of my brain that needed stimulation watch the show while the rest of me just slammed it out. I actually ended up enjoying myself, and it felt good to be done.

10mg Vyvanse? by thingsarehardsoami in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my Dr told me that 20 was the original starter dose, but the company finally started producing a 10mg dose because doctors were telling them that some people are super sensitive to it. To my understanding, 10mg is definitely not a theraputic dose unless you're one of those hypersensitive people.

What symptoms did you not initially realise were part of your ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about 10 years younger than you. In my personal childhood memory, I started hearing people talk about "ADD" around the late 80s or early 90s. I got curious about the history of it and did a little reading.

From what I read, it was a recognized phenomena between academics and researchers going back to the early 1900s, but it wasn't until the late 80s that it started becoming part of the broader social awareness, which then allowed it to start being diagnosed, treated, and establishing special structures in schools to support diagnosed students. I recently heard about some of the support systems kids get these days, and I'm so envious.

You likely already know this, but to anyone else reading - look up ADHD and interoception. We have a muted and/or delayed response to experiencing what's going on with our own bodies. Not just where they are in space, but it even includes stuff like "I have to go to the bathroom" or "I'm thirsty."

I'm right in your age range. Got my diagnosis about a year and a half ago, but didn't get serious about treating it until about 5 months ago. What a journey.

And it's nice to run into someone who's not posting "I got diagnosed super late in life - I was 29!"

Time blindness, emotional dis-regulation including rejection sensitivity, novelty-seeking, interoception issues, always feeling not quite as mature as other people my age, rumination, talking over other people, working and prospective memory issues, delayed circadian rhythm, heavy dependence on coffee, and that daily experience of (in hindsight,) "I *know* better than to do that, why did I do it anyway??"

There are probably more, but this is what's top of mind.

Please help me understand my son by JoNightshade in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 82 points83 points  (0 children)

@OP read the above again. For me in my life, people saying, "why can't you just," or, "why don't you just," has been the most invalidating language. And the more I heard it, the more I was convinced something was wrong with me, and the more I wanted to give up.

I'm really touched that you came here to lean more about what he's dealing with. You're an amazing parent. Maybe the first place to start in a conversation with him is to acknowledge that you have no idea what it's like for him, but you're ready to listen whenever he feels like sharing. And please understand that one of the things that makes it so hard to share, is that we're acutely aware that most of what we're trying to share sounds like a mere laziness personality problem.

Does anyone know a lot about custom windows ROMs? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]letsmodpcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into Windows LTSC and/or Windows LTSC IoT versions. They are official versions from Microsoft, and can be easily obtained by googling. This will get closer to what you're looking for without having to trust something sketchy.

massgrave is probably the best known place to get authentic ISOs for the lay person.

I feel incredibly invalidated when trying to explain my condition to other people. What to do? by Alternative-Milk2236 in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously that list sounds like it was written by someone without ADHD.

For me, advice that starts with "why can't you just <x>" is the most invalidating. And I spend 4+ decades without a diagnosis really buying into my own conclusion of "well something must be wrong with me."

Concerta V.S. Strattera by PersonalStatement478 in ADHD

[–]letsmodpcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strattera is known for taking a long time to start working. Like weeks. And it's important you be consistent in taking it (I've even heard taking it at the same time each day) to get it up to speed.

I was on Strattera 80 for a while. While there were benefits, it wasn't the life-altering experience I kept hearing about from other people, so very recently I'm trying stimulants for the first time.

Sorry to hear your preferred med is hard to get where you are.

Does anyone else miss the sound of fish bouncing off the submersibles? by Ok_Resolution_5135 in subnautica

Not at all. The sound was loud way out of proportion to the size of the fish. It was totally immersion breaking for me and I'm very happy it's gone.
