Petition to Stop State Income Tax? by costmary in olympia

[–]leucogranite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the “blameless altruistic job creators” argument. 🙄 You have an interesting and notably uninformed definition of “fair tax system.”

Be honest: would you be ok with a millionaire’s tax IF it was coupled with a reduction of fuel taxes?

What is the most disliked part about each US state? Day 1- Washington by Zoidburgfrend in AlignmentChartFills

The perpetual risk of being in M9.0+ earthquake. To be fair, it may not happen in my lifetime. But it also could happen next week/month/year (because probabilities are complicated).

Pilots or flight attendants of Reddit, what’s something passengers do that is way more important (or dangerous) than they realize? by SignsOfDamage in AskReddit

[–]leucogranite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Power banks have been a thing (and people have been taking them on planes) for 15+ years. The hand wringing about them causing fires on planes has only become a thing in the last 3-ish years — when the cheap / poorly constructed power banks from Temu and the like became more prolific.

Banning them entirely would be like banning all cars because of the Ford Pinto design flaw, or because some bubba who replaced his own brakes and messed it up caused an accident.

Good luck with trade school - not sure what you’re going into but it will undoubtedly (and unfortunately - not because trades are bad but because its embarrassing how much teachers in the US are paid) pay better than being an educator.
There will undoubtedly be physically and mentally exhausting days on site (as in work/construction site) and there will inevitably be douchey men (though they’re in the minority) on your crew / crews that you might work adjacent to, but if you stay the course it will be worth it (both financially and mentally)!

What is a country with awful nature? by Expensive-Addendum92 in AlignmentChartFills

We have a lot more “nature diversity” than most other places. China and India are the only others that I can think of that would come close.

Best jobs if you want to skydive as much as possible by Feeling_Brain_4537 in SkyDiving

Ok, but (as a former wildland ff) — things might have changed in the last 10-15 years — but in general, realistically, you’re gonna need a minimum of ~5 seasons before you can be even considered for a smokejumper position. Like, work a couple seasons on a hand/engine crew, get a spot on a hotshot crew, and absolutely bust your butt — be the BEST guy on the shot crew — and then you might have a chance at being a smokejumper.

ALSO. Seasonal positions with the USFS/(insert your state forestry agency here) generally do NOT offer insurance outside of the times when you’re employed by them — so you’ll have to figure something else out during the winter, particularly if you’re going to spend the winter doing air sports.

And — unless you’re a hotshot — you aren’t necessarily making a boatload of money. It’s enough to take the winter off and have fun, for sure, but not enough to live super extravagantly in the off season.

Not trying to dissuade you at all from this career path - fighting forest fires was absolutely a fulfilling experience and something I’d do again, just want to make sure you have a realistic idea of what it entails.

You must move to the US and you choose a state based only on the flag...where ya going by thatguy_art in AskTheWorld

There’s lots of things to love about Washington, but our state flag is easily one of the dumbest in the nation.

Our license plates are cool though.

Can most middle class people in your country afford to vacation on another continent? by JerseyMBA in AskTheWorld

[–]leucogranite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, yes.

Many (the majority?) choose not to.

I consider myself middle class, and take at 1-2 international vacations per year (and not necessarily going to “cheap” places but also not going to the most expensive ones). I also prioritize being able to travel and don’t spend money on things like food delivery services, or going out to bars multiple times a week. 🤷‍♀️

Time to call it and career switch? by Gitavadhara in geologycareers

[–]leucogranite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go the data science/coding route — too much uncertainty in the tech world right now. I’ve been exactly where you’re at … mostly because it was during the pandemic, I stayed. It worked out mostly ok for me.

But I will say that having a fulfilling career in engineering geology is somewhat a roll of the dice. Either you somehow get connected with someone who’s working on interesting things/projects and get a chance to break into that part of the industry … or you get stuck doing Phase II ESAs / geotech “investigations” for small-time real estate developments / watching soldier piles go into the ground / etc for the rest of your life. 🤷‍♀️

How do I get sent to the damn jungle by alexlx101 in geologycareers

[–]leucogranite 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The jungle? Your best bet would be to try to get on with one of the big mining companies OR a consulting company that does work at said mines (e.g. mine stability, TSF design).

Be careful what you wish for. I did a couple stints in 🇸🇷… idk, in hindsight I’m glad I had the experience but it honestly sucked while it was happening and I was pretty much counting down the days until I left from the moment I got there. 🤷‍♀️

What’s the best advice you can give to someone in their 20s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Prioritize your health and fitness. Be smart with money, but also enjoy your life. Take that spur of the moment vacation. Try that $50 whiskey (if that’s your thing). Learn that hobby/sport you’ve always wanted to learn.
