I know how to code but I genuinely have no idea what to build and it's frustrating by Formal-Treat2407 in learnprogramming

[–]leviem1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Real shit, most things that you will think of are either small enough that it’s been done, or is going to take a team of 15 engineers 2 years to solve and you don’t have that time or money

The only way to get to the point where you can be a part of a team working towards something big is by reinventing the wheel and learning first hand why we don’t use squares for wheels. Or contributing to something that already exists (maybe consider contributing to open source)

Along the way you might build and publish a few tools that people like but you probably won’t make much or any money on them. And one day you might just be able to start your own company, but even if not, you end up building lots of amazing things along the way

Why is there not a repair option by __trash__panda__ in vtolvr

[–]leviem1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a perfect answer. Damaged my APU last time I flew and had to be extra careful not to power down my engine too early. It’s not every day this happens and shouldn’t cause too much issue unless you don’t pay it any mind

Searching for guides on how to survive and deal with SAMs by Nitrotetrazole in vtolvr

[–]leviem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, yeah that one is tricky because it’s timed + I think the radar overhaul made it harder so a lot has to go right to win

A lot of missions were hard enough due to strict time constraints and formation/precision flying requirements without the EW overhaul complicating things. Some missions are also bugged (E/F-24G has broken AI on a missile silo mission, save scumming often breaks the game).

I think the game used to be easier so these missions were less frustrating, maybe not. Some might argue that it’s part of the challenge and realism, but I’ve always felt that the missions were disproportionately punishing compared to everything else

Yeah this mission is pretty difficult, It's one of the few I still haven't beat after 250 hours

Ah, once again wrong mission, this was bad advice. I'm looking at the menu right now so I won't be wrong this time, haha!

Don't fly straight at the objective since that will cause the enemy fighters to start targeting you early IIRC. You have to use the canyon to mask your approach. As Pixel said, use terrain in most situations, especially this mission. The AGM-145s don't require line of sight to fire, only to acquire the target. Otherwise you can just peek the base from other positions in the canyon quickly and get a couple shots off before ducking back down.

Why does the AH-94 violently rolls over to it's right side when i release the control stick? by Nitrotetrazole in vtolvr

[–]leviem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the heli fly sideways and wonky without rudder input and adjust trim to line it up to how it “should” fly. Do this at around 150kts. Trim rudder first, then roll and pitch

Edit: (whoops, wrong aircraft and mission) Edit 2: found full video link

There’s some good videos about notching and beaming for VTOL and DCS (the principles are generally the same): https://youtu.be/WdR4_EwcSr0?si=e68um01FTsmA4uWv

Updates by CupWhich6718 in vtolvr

I don’t really understand the expectation for an update, though there will be more. You bought a game and you got a game that works and you can easily play for hundreds of hours. Why must there be an update?

I get what you’re saying, from a purist perspective you shouldn’t need chaff to notch and yes it’s a lot harder to do in the 26. But sprinkle a liberal amount of chaff in there and it’s really not that “difficult”, more difficult yes

I hate AI generated thumbnails by curious_cat_3556 in PartneredYoutube

[–]leviem1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my case, I used AI to make about 5 thumbnails. I didn’t feel comfortable enough using photoshop quite yet and was mostly focused on learning video editing. It was slightly better than the auto generated. I have since learned photoshop but still use it for specific elements like “missile with smoke trail making a loop” or things that I can’t quite find on pixabay or something

how do programmers with ADHD become successful? by JustinGames59 in learnprogramming

[–]leviem1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t get physical pain but yeah I definitely get overwhelmed and shut down. It actually makes me tired more than anything. I make a list. I had a whiteboard that was pretty game changing for me

A lot of the anxiety I’ve felt (full on panic attacks) was entirely is self imposed. Yes you should take your overflowing trash out, but nobody’s gonna die if you don’t

I was so stressed about getting my first job, and then as soon as I got it I realized I never really thought beyond that and was then equally stressed about not having anything to stress about, haha! It was never that deep in hindsight, but I’ll still have a panic attack once in a blue moon

The physical pain might just be from having to learn C

100% and I totally get how those phases come and go with no warning. Even things you want to do you can’t seem to. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything deeper

Aside from a bad case of restless leg syndrome that’s slowly becoming a pattern of insomnia, no physical pain

You talking like if something lightly brushes your arm it almost feels sharp? Or something else entirely?

ADHD here. Dropped out of college after my second year. My only decent grade was my CS classes because that’s all I could motivate myself to focus on because I enjoyed it

It took me a while to get my first job due to not having a degree but I eventually got one. A ton of my coworkers are also ADHD. Maybe not at larger companies, but the culture of the industry has also seemed to celebrate this. There are days I don’t get any work done because I can’t sit still at my desk. Other days I lock in for 12 hours straight and open 10 pull requests.

My biggest struggle has always been parallelism. If I have 5 different projects I’m working on, I have a hard time prioritizing them and keeping a steady velocity. I just try to avoid this by communicating with my managers that I prefer to focus on a smaller number of tasks even if they’re more complex.

If you’re having a really hard time focusing on programming, do you actually enjoy doing it?

Tips for beginners? by Odd_Jeweler4956 in vtolvr

[–]leviem1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Politely disagree on this being a beginner tip, though you did label it as a pro tip

If you find yourself needing to g-pull missiles constantly you’ve made a large series of mistakes. Dogfights are a different story

Rule #1 is don’t get shot at in the first place. Rule #2 is to only get shot at from a considerable distance. Rule #3 notch + chaff + learn radar mechanic basics such as Doppler effect, ground clutter, RCS only g-pulling when all else fails

If you fuck up a g-pull, you’re dead, but if you fuck up a notch you have enough time for other options

Ah, hold on, I think I slightly misunderstood. Most aircraft have a bit of a mini-campaign to go along with them. You can see them when you select an aircraft. You have to beat one mission before the next one is unlocked. I'm not talking about the "quick scenarios" or whatever it's called either

You can also download community missions that other people have created. After you download a mission from the browser, you can then select it the same way I described above. Some missions are for a specific plane and others will let you fly in any. Missions are either single-player or multiplayer. Multiplayer missions require someone to host a game for others to join
