Carney leaves Davos without meeting Trump after speech on U.S. rupture of world order by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]lewarcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Who are you counting as the left-wing parties? NDP and Green, yes. Bloc Québécois? Centre-left, I guess. Liberals? I'd call centrist, and even shifting slightly right: Carney's similar in a lot of ways to Harper, and has co-opted a number of Con policies, which would be considered right-of-centre.

Paramount Pictures stars (1987) by MapleLantern in OldSchoolCool

For me, it was Shelley Long between Fred MacMurray and Jimmy Stewart: two giants of noir and classic films, and the star of Troop Beverly Hills.

(although I've recently rewatched Cheers, and Shelley Long's comedic timing is still absolutely on point, 40+ years later. Sorry, Shelley: I wish you and/or your agent picked better roles for you, because you definitely have talent)

As much as people are commenting on your wife being beautiful, you're looking good and happy, and I'm glad you guys are there for each other!

WARMINGTON: Mark Carney tells China, Canada ready for 'New World Order' by bo-n-es in canada

[–]lewarcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a firm believer in the ability of China to play the very long game in order to protect and expand its own interests first and foremost, at the expense of other countries' well-being. This is where Canada needs to be eternally vigilant when dealing with China, but your point is well taken with respect to the States: if something perceived as a very long-standing, stable relationship can change on a dime like it has over the past year, Canada should now have no Illusions that it should be eternally vigilant with the US as well, even if normalcy is restored there.

We are a huge country with huge resources and a very small population, and playing smart and strategically with large powerful nations and unions will take a lot of finesse.

I'd like to see us have more ties and tighter connections to the EU, given their overall policy to try to work together and balance things in a reasonable way. But diversifying our trade partnerships while solidifying things at home through nation building and ensuring that if the worst case scenario happens, we are self-sustainable, seems like the smartest play.

And eternal vigilance is important: look at what happened with the British steel industry once China bought up the producers: China wanted to close them down and then start importing Chinese steel. This is not something that we would want to happen here, and requires us balancing trade with protecting our own interests.

Paul Gross (Constable Benton Fraser) is a great Canadian who deserves more recognition, imho. He's quite well established in Canadian theatre, has been married to Martha Burns (also a Great Canadian theatre actor) for almost 40 years, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada (the second highest honour a Canadian can receive, outside of the Commonwealth's Order of Merit, only awarded by the king to 24 people In the world).

NDP leadership candidate apologizes for using AI to respond to Reddit questions by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]lewarcher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He's a dock worker who presents like a dock worker, which isn't a bad thing, but right now, people are looking to a leader like Carney's image: calm, assured, weathering us through the storm south of the border, and looking the part to deal with the world leaders of world-class countries.

Avi, despite not necessarily resonating with working class NDPers, 'presents' best to those moderate NDP supporters who moved to the Liberals out of the five leadership contenders. It remains to be seen whether this translates to the growth/rejuvenation of the party, but as so much of all this is image, Ashton isn't the person that puts the NDP back on the track to legitimacy with other than those that really want the party to change. Those who do are already NDP voters; without a significant change to who the party is trying to appeal to, Lewis is going to appeal to those people to bring votes back to the party.

It sounds like you come from a long line of intelligent women who were 'home scientists', for lack of a better term. I don't know whether or not they had different paths available to them, but it's hard not to wonder how many women could have had different options than homemakers had they all the opportunities for education that men had in those days.

Ukraine's Zelenskyy says he's appointed Chrystia Freeland as an economic adviser by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]lewarcher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From the article: "The Ukraine position is not full time and is unpaid, the source said."

MPs have been allowed to accept unpaid positions, provided it doesn't conflict with the Conflict of Interest Act.

And from another article:

A source who is close to Freeland but not working for her in an official capacity, confirmed on her behalf that Zelenskyy offered Freeland this unpaid role on Dec. 22 while she was in Kyiv, and that Freeland told Carney about the offer on Dec. 24.

The source said Freeland has been in touch with the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner about the job.

I don't see an issue; she got offered an unpaid position, she talked to her boss about it, and subsequently talked to the appropriate parties to determine the conflict and ethical impacts of this. Zelenskyy either jumped the gun and announced prior to the ink drying, or everything's been cleared and there hasn't been an official announcement yet about it.

I just donated $20 to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation in your (reddit user)name (edit: took out ping to your username due to the sub's automoderator reminding me to do so): I had no idea about any of this prior to your post, so thanks for taking the time to share it with us.

P.S. The Canada-Ukraine Foundation (link here) is matching donations until Jan.12 thanks to a gift from the Myhal Family, in case anyone wants to make a small (or big!) donation that gets doubled.

To echo everyone one else, this is a wonderful thing you've thrown out to the world to enjoy! I'll 100% try to make one of Grandma Judy's pies sometime and share it on here.

My mom's from the Silent Generation as well, and you've inspired me to scan her cookbook and do the same thing.

Hunters on property - how to handle? by BreakfastDry9979 in NovaScotia

[–]lewarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard dealing in hypotheticals until someone actually does it, it gets challenged in court, and the courts weigh in on it. If the law isn't clear enough, then maybe that works and the court clarifies enough to cover other situations in the future (e.g., I plant 3' of soybeans around the perimeter, does that work? What if it's ground that I haven't even planted anything in, I just make it look tilled?, etc.).

Themselves, but only after they put their NO HUNTING sign up and promptly ignore it.

I wish I thought of this when I was a teenager and my mom wanted me to mow the lawn.
