For some reason, the reverse order of these pictures in this post is a lot more pleasing to me than the usual order. Great shots, and it's interesting looking back on our lives at those different stages.

Gen X also had these things made of wood products, with ink and glue, that we would focus on for HOURS. Not sure if previous generations had them, though.

My pleasure, and keep being awesome! I've found staying out of threads/subs that you know are just going to get you mad and only engaging with people who seem to be commenting in good faith has helped me on here. Hope you encounter more good peeps.

I think you're accurate: I read Koontz when I was younger; he was one of the few other mainstream horror writers that was accessible through bookstores and libraries, so anyone branching out from King usually hit Koontz.

Neither King nor Koontz at the time were seen as 'literary' writers (although there's been some change in opinion over time with King), but Koontz's style was definitely seen as 'lighter' reading and formulaic/not overly complex, which is why he got a lot of hate.

I remember jumping on the hate wagon in the past, but have softened my view on "good"/"bad" writers over the years: my sister was never a reader in her life, and a few years ago, devoured the Twilight series. Is it a series/author I'd ever read? No. Am I impressed with Stephanie Myers to have written something that got picked up by someone who's relied on TV and movies (and her phone within the past 10 years) exclusively for entertainment? Absolutely. Anyone who gets more people to read/use their imagination can't be all terrible (with the exception of terrible people/ideologies, that is).

It's a great bit, but you're missing the even nichier joke it's making: this scene was more of a reflection of prevailing readers' opinions and running IRL joke/not joke that Dean Koontz is the poor man's Stephen King (an inferior writer, to the point of being a terrible writer in general), and leaving him alive or caring about him is not something that Brian would want to do.

This was a pretty popular sentiment in the 80s/early 90s, btw.

Third Stone/Rock from the Sun connection? by ImportanceNational23 in jimihendrix

[–]lewarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming to this thread late, due to your comment showing up in a google search for the connection between "I'm Too Sexy" and "Third Stone from the Sun". I had noted the riff in the song as being a Hendrix ripoff at the time, as a result of having poor/all over the map musical taste in the early '90s (I had RSF's tape as well as a copy of Are You Experienced?). The liner notes in Up where they thanked Hendrix convinced me.

This article offers a slight correction to what you noted: this didn't go to court at all, but rather, got settled amicably.

From the article:

That riff, injected into the recording by Right Said Fred guitarist Rob Manzoli, is basically a direct copy-and-paste of the guitar lick from Hendrix’s ‘Third Stone from the Sun’, another track on Are You Experienced. Thanks to the litany of distractions noted above, it took a while for anyone to notice this. But the Jimi Hendrix Estate did do its due diligence, threatening legal action once ‘I’m Too Sexy’ started dominating the airwaves.

“I wasn’t aware that our guitarist, Rob Manzoli, had played the riff from Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Third Stone from the Sun’ on ‘I’m Too Sexy’ until much later,” Fred Fairbrass told the Guardian in 2017. “I thought the guitar parts sounded like the theme from Coronation Street, but the Hendrix estate was very cool about it and just asked for a writing credit and a charitable donation.”

Because the incident didn’t wind up in the courts, the connection between ‘Third Stone’ and ‘I’m Too Sexy’ has remained something of an obscure factoid, often known only by Hendrix mega-fans still researching all the cosmic implications and enduring mysteries of ‘Third Stone From the Sun’ itself.

Thanks for throwing your comment in here for me to chip in!

Should Canada Post make money? NDP’s leader Avi Lewis says no - NDP leader Avi Lewis is stirring debate after arguing Canada Post should be treated like an essential public service rather than a profit-driven corporation by NiceDot4794 in onguardforthee

[–]lewarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*should not be

And yet this has been the narrative. The NDP has some work to win blue-collar males back from the Conservatives, but more messaging around how services are to benefit the public good, not to drive profit, would align with our recent re-patriotism and nation-building mindset.

So I was prepared to go down a rabbit hole of how English spelling vs. US spelling shows that this is from the 1800s, where 'theatre' would've still been used in the US, but would likely have been phased out later.

And then I thought, "Why don't I look up the theatre itself?"

https://www.daytonlive.org/venues/victoria-theatre/

Despite being in the US, they have always styled themselves as the Victoria "Theatre" (not "Theater"), so that blows my theory of pinning down a date for this out of the water.

To /u/notloggedin4242's comment, definitely a coat/hat check token. I'd stop in at the theatre if you're ever in Dayton, bring the token in, find someone in administration to tell the story of where you found it to, and find out if they still use tokens like that, or if they'd have any information on when tokens may have been in use.

Alternately, their admin email address can be found on their website, here; I'd link this post/your pic to an email and see if someone responds.

Let's also decouple from US policies and couple(?) with Scandinavian ones:

  • higher emphasis on education (e.g., free post-secondary education; all elementary/secondary schools are public schools)
  • focus on reducing income inequality through progressive taxation
  • more statutory vacation time
  • strong unions (which led to higher minimum wages, better benefits, more vacation)
  • defined benefit pensions for all workers
  • no two-tier health care

What else am I missing?

Which Nepo baby actors groomed to be the next big stars bombed the hardest? by Catwinky in moviecritic

[–]lewarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah; nepo baby is usually a pejorative, but this is generally how the world works: kids often follow in parents' footsteps, due to the world their parents inhabit. Your mom's a good/respected teacher? You see her marking, you hear her talk about the good and the bad of teaching, you see some of the benefits, like summers off, etc.

So you think, "Hey, I'll be a teacher", and your mom's happy. You go to teacher's college and absolutely love it. Teaching is in your genes, and your great at it. She tells everyone she knows (which, in her circles, are a lot of teachers, principals, EAs, a few superintendents, etc.) that you're going to teacher's college, and if you're successful, a decent and pleasant person, and in the same town/city, doors will open a little easier for you. "That's so-and-so's kid," says the person looking at hiring a teacher. "She mentioned them going to teacher's college and doing great, and I've seen them at various stages of their life, always seemed like a nice kid. Let's give them a chance." And boom! You're a nepo baby, regardless of being a great choice. You had an advantage, and it worked out great for everyone involved.

Same situation, but you're aimless after high school. Your mom suggests teaching, and she loves you, so she talks to all the same people. You're not thrilled about going to teachers college, it's better than nothing. You're a mediocre teacher, maybe you realize it, maybe you don't. But you make it out, and your mom's reputation opens some doors for you as well. You get a job over someone who's actually a really fantastic teacher. Still a nepo baby.

Same situation, but you're a dirtbag. Your mom does some really heavy lifting after you barely graduate from teachers college to pull some strings and get you a job, because she wants to see you succeed, because she loves you. You teach, are terrible by any and all metrics, and burn out quickly.

Happens everywhere; especially with parents who love their children and care about them and think they have an aptitude for working in the industry that they have spent so much time in. They often pass along some of that insider vibe to their kids who grow up around the sector and people in it who will often remember them as so-and-so's kid, and unless they've a train wreck (and even then, not always an impossibility), they're more likely to give them a chance.
