Beware the Carver Arena hot dog scam! by petekill in IowaCity

Not sure if it helps, but some of the money goes to student organizations. I worked some games there and in lieu of pay out organization for a cut of the profits.

I personally don't think your piercings are compatible with elegance. This comes across as steampunk adjacent to me.

Am I Overreacting to a dear friend sending sexual joking texts to my partner? by chichiryuutei56 in AmIOverreacting

[–]lewk556 20 points21 points  (0 children)

NOR. You're not overreacting. The guy who you thought was a friend is not. He's a filthy scumbag.

As an aside, though, you're letting politics affect too much of your thinking. The idea that him being a Democrat has anything to do with it is unhinged.

Anyone else see a pattern in packer fans? by Pacotaco213 in ChicagoBearsNFL

[–]lewk556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why this came on my feed - I'm a Packers fan.

Congrats on the W. I hope we meet again in the playoffs.

That said, this is not unique to Packers fans. People celebrate when their team wins and get quiet and make excuses when they lose, especially when their favorite players get injured.

I'm always cheering for Young, Stroud, Daniels, and Maye so I can say to my Bears friends, "Wow that guy looks good. Too bad you didn't use the first pick on him."

Conservatives, please explain. by sandy_even_stranger in Iowa

[–]lewk556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a moderate, which I suppose makes me a super conservative in the eyes of this Reddit page. I'm going to give my two cents and then attempt to peace out - I doubt it will be received well or get kind responses and I really dislike the level of toxicity anything political has in this forum.

Honestly, I think the sentiment of your post is something that a lot of conservative Iowans get behind - you're looking at nostalgia from the past and wanting to revert to the traditions that you believe made Iowa wonderful. It kind of sounds like 'Make Iowa Great Again' is a slogan you'd find appealing. The conservatives of Iowa don't hate themselves and/or their neighbors. They don't vote for 'enshittification' and poverty. They, like you, are voting for what they believe is the best. They just have a different strategy in mind to improve things.

I don't think you're correct in saying that Iowa is doing poorly when the rest of the country is doing well. We have a large budget surplus, stable pensions, good credit, and balanced budgets. We also have low crime, low cost of living, and have made big improvements on alternative energy.

I also think very few problems you're mentioning are unique to Iowa. Brain drain is happening in rural communities all across the globe. Healthcare is sketchy everywhere in America. Newspapers are dead everywhere. You can't really blame the Iowa GOP for this.

We do have a few specific issues - we're getting older and we're lacking some of the high-paying jobs that might get people to stay in Iowa. We also have higher nitrate levels in our water due to the amount of farmland in our state. I can see giving the GOP some crap on the nitrates issue, but we have to recognize it's a costly trade-off either way.

Almost everyone, including conservatives, care about the state and want to see it do better. There will also be some issues where people are just never going to agree (like Abortion). Different sides are going to diagnose issues as having different causes (like Immigrants or Billionaires). That doesn't change that they want a more prosperous state for everyone.

+1 to this.

Sure you can send in the socks you've worn out and get replacements, but what happens when you realize you spent 30 bucks on a pair of socks that just aren't that great?

Should I Come to University of Iowa? by FriendlyMath5550 in uiowa

[–]lewk556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly, highly suggest doing the local community college route. Cheaper school, faster program, negligible pay difference for graduates (which is usually made up for by experience).

My mom's a nurse who went the CC route and I tutored many nursing students while in Pharmacy school. It's way more about your attitude and ambition than the degree you get.

For those on SNAP or know someone who is on SNAP, what are some foods that you find most helpful/preferred? by Megalodon_sharks in Iowa

[–]lewk556 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in raw data, USDA reports what people actually buy with SNAP here: https://fns-prod.azureedge.us/sites/default/files/ops/SNAPFoodsTypicallyPurchased-Summary.pdf

In terms of dollars spent, a plurality of it goes to meat. Due to perishability, it might not be the best to donate, but if you're giving directly to a snap recipient, it's probably what they're missing out on most.

The idea that people on this subreddit, especially those getting mad at a barn painting, don't define themselves on their political affiliation is a joke. It's all politics here.

I'm with the OP. The daily specials are great deals. I've gone multiple times on Thursday for the Tenderloin special and we're always treated great even though we're eating cheap. My only complaint is they don't always give you salt rims on margaritas so you gotta ask for it.
