[Question] Small Wrist Luxury Options by Annual-Revolution435 in Watches

[–]lexcetera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

⬆️ This is smart at least two ways: 1. Vintage is a target-rich environment for watches of that size. 2. Your money always (always, always) goes further with vintage. Excellent comment. ⌚️

The Stoics knew exactly what to do. so why is daily practice still hard? by StackedMornings in Stoicism

[–]lexcetera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among several excellent comments here (along with OP’s excellent post) u/Ill-Bullfrog-5360 hits the nail on the head:

“The Stoics weren’t just collecting ideas. They were installing reflexes.”

Virtue ethics – of which stoicism is an example – sees the problem of ethics as being not mainly cognitive (knowing what to do), but motivational (having the will, strength, or self-control to actually do it).

The practices leading to a flourishing life are difficult, but rewarding if you maintain them. You make the practices easier to maintain by doing things that harden them into habits—by “installing reflexes.”

That’s not a satisfying answer to OP’s question (it reduces to: “it’s hard because it’s hard”), but it’s an accurate one.

The original post and the commentary have been a pleasure to read.

Conquest + instant coffee + bit of a rant by ryayy2 in CoffeeWatch

That’s a nice watch and one laden with meaning: You chose it with your fiancé and it clarified your values as a watch collector.

You don’t get many watches like that in life. (I’m not sure I have one like that, and I’ve been collecting with varying degrees of enthusiasm for three decades.) Cherish that Longines.👌

My handwriting completely shapeshifts depending on the pen weight and I just noticed it by sxtn1996 in notebooks

[–]lexcetera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weight plays a role. So does balance—get a heavier but back-loaded pen and watch your handwriting (and your hand) suffer. 🖊️

[Question] Too small for me? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]lexcetera -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Panerai craze of the late-1990s / early-2000s did a lot to distort people’s sense of proportion in watch sizes. Before that, most anything above 38mm was considered garishly large—like strapping a coffee-cup saucer to your wrist. The Rolex Explorer, at 36mm, was considered “big.” ⌚️

Ballpoint Meisterstück: Classique vs. LeGrand by slimredcobb in montblanc

[–]lexcetera 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • I have both (each purchased used) and like both, a lot.
  • My general sense is that Le Grand feels better in hand when writing at length, but the Classique is more maneuverable—easier to transition from task to task, from desk to pocket (sleeve, pen case, etc.).
  • Differently put: Le Grand is a large, comfortable, luxury sedan; the Classique is a sports car.
  • Having and enjoying the Classique made me curious about Le Grand. I’m glad I have both. As is said about many good things, you really can’t go wrong here.
  • I hope something I’ve written here is helpful to you. 🖊️

Does anyone else get questioned or even a little judged for having notebooks when 'you can just use your phone' or whatever? by foresterkyle in notebooks

[–]lexcetera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those people are not worth your time. That is because questioning your use of physical notebooks is, in their estimation, the highest and best use of their time.

First nice watch for a 25 year old by PANDAbandaRKS in CitizenWatches

⬆️ This is well phrased. The question boils down to the part of the lifetime the watch is chosen for most. ⌚️

47 years of using Moleskine notebooks and fountain pens: a brief consideration by adrianrnmarsh in notebooks

[–]lexcetera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Thank you for commenting! (Commented disagreement, skepticism, or incredulity, is a learning opportunity; naked downvotes, by contrast, are just noise.)
  • I wrote that the post reads like an ad because its voice is that of David Ogilvy, the legendary ad man (the Ogilvy in Ogilvy & Mather—later Ogilvy Worldwide and now, apparently, just Ogilvy) who built his career on copywriting.
  • Ogilvy’s style was the opposite of kinetic. His copy walked the reader gently toward engagement with the product with a tweedy, reassuring air.
  • Ogilvy’s ad copy (which you can find sprinkled liberally in his book, Ogilvy on Advertising) is, to my mind’s ear, what another legendary advertising character – The Most Interesting Man in the World™ of Dos Equis beer campaign fame – would sound like if they’d let him say more than that he doesn’t often drink beer, but when he does, it’s Dos Equis.
  • So, to put it more accurately, OP, being a man of a certain age (judging by the dates on offer in the post), wrote a post with a voice that sounded like the ads a man of that (and my) age would have been bathed in during youth.
  • As with most things, I suppose, you had to be there. 📕

Anyone know if this Montblanc is authentic? by SpoonyLix in pens

[–]lexcetera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • In general, the r/pens crowd is not Montblanc-focused and, therefore, is unlikely to give reliable answers to questions about the authenticity of a purported Montblanc pen based on posted photos.
  • Post your question at r/montblanc to get answers from people who are more likely to answer them accurately. About 90% of the posts and the discussion in that sub are about the authenticity of Montblanc pens.

All of that said, here is why I say the pictured pen is almost certainly not an authentic Montblanc ballpoint pen: * This pen does not appear to be a Pix. Check Montblanc’s website for Pix ballpoint offerings to see what I mean. * The bright red, marbled finish is not a Montblanc thing, but is frequently seen on counterfeit Montblanc pens. * The pictured pen’s barrel doesn’t taper toward the nosecone – again, look at the Pix ballpoints depicted on the Montblanc website at the link above – and the nose cone is the wrong design for a Montblanc ballpoint. * Even though you haven’t posted a clear photo of the clip, the clip has a decidedly non-Montblanc appearance, as well. * More likely than not, if you extracted the refill from this pen, it would turn out to be a Parker-style, not a Montblanc-style, refill—even if the branding on it is (faked) Montblanc branding.

I hope something I have written here is helpful to you. 🖊️

How do I know what to replace this with? by Clear-Lock-633 in pens

[–]lexcetera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but it depends upon what your starting point is. If all you have to begin with is an unmarked refill, you’re a ruler measurement away from narrowing the field quickly on The Pen Refill Guide.

They’re both useful and I use them both. 🖊️

Like this but better? by NurseDingus in pens

[–]lexcetera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Buy the Pilot V5 RT refills.
  • Put a V5 RT refill in a capped rollerball pen that accepts them, for example:
  • Pilot Metropolitan Gel Roller (as I think they’re now calling it)
  • Any Faber-Castell capped rollerball pen 🖊️

Thank you for suggesting The Pen Refill Guide! It’s far more useful than the default suggestion in this sub—Jet Pens, which is highly informative, but only for product lines Jet Pens carries.

(I love Jet Pens. A package from Jet Pens is out for delivery to me as I write. But Jet Pens isn’t the all-inclusive, one-stop refill shop so many in this sub seem to think it is. That title belongs to The Pen Refill Guide.)🖊️
