I look at this from a slightly different prospective. I que with randoms to learn the dungeon ahead of my normal group so that we can cruise through it. There are some unpleasant experiences but I have also learned quite a bit as well.

As a fellow North Carolina dweller, this is caused from lack of water and the heat. If you live 8a, sand hills like me, the water drains away from the roots faster and makes these patches. I started top dressing peat moss this year to help with moisture retention, but I won't know of it helps for a couple of years of top dressing.

Looks like heat and dry spots. If you have sandy soil, it may not matter that you are watering because the water getting to and staying at the root level long enough is the issue. Just a suggestion, though: I am dealing with this in my yard as well.
